Fascinating rebuild. Thank you. You mentioned that you clean the balance spring separately. I'm intrigued to know how you do this as I've seen other watchmakers reattach it to the main plate and put the assembly in the cleaner.

Thanks for the great question! I use a product called One Dip to clean the hairspring and the balance jewels. It's a pretty strong solvent that does a great job of breaking down any oil that may be present. I've also cleaned balances in the ultrasonic machine, and still do from time to time, but my personal preference is to remove the balance and clean it separately.

@@WolfeVintageWatches Ah thank you. Your method does seem a bit more thorough but less likely to damage the spring. Please keep the videos coming - I really enjoy them.

I was taught that he pallet jewels should never be lubricated, and I’ve not seen anyone else do this. Can you shed any light on this? Thanks,

Enjoyed that thanks. Can I ask; should you ideally use brass tweezers for this work or is it ok to use stainless once you have more experience, like yourself? I'm just thinking about not scratching the parts that's all? Cheers
@WolfeVintageWatches
@WolfeVintageWatches 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Great question. I think it probably comes down to personal preference and how comfortable you are with using stainless or brass tweezers. I prefer using stainless because the points are much finer and sharper than brass tweezers. This allows a little better control when manipulating parts. For me, the biggest danger of scratching things is when I'm using screwdrivers, especially when trying to loosen a stubborn screw.

@@WolfeVintageWatches Many thanks for the advice. I must admit, using screwdrivers is very challenging as a novice but, good fun trying. Cheers

Did you lubricate the pallet fork pivot? Why??
@WolfeVintageWatches
@WolfeVintageWatches 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Slim. Yes, I did. When I was first getting started in watch repair years ago, I referred to this: blog.esslinger.com/how-to-oil-a-watch/ About 2/3's of the way down, they mention the oil to be used on pallet pivots. Of course there are different approaches to oiling the pallet pivots or not, as can be seen in this forum post: www.watchrepairtalk.com/topic/5304-lubricating-pallet-fork-pivots-bfg-866/ To answer your question directly, I oil the pallet pivots because I've always oiled them; it's just part of my workflow at this point. I did have a discussion on another video of mine about this topic and I came to the conclusion that I'll try not oiling the pallet pivots. I've had great results with lubricating them, but I'm certainly always trying to improve and learn more! Thanks for your question and for watching!

@@WolfeVintageWatches Except, this document is wrong. If you look at the picture for "Pallet Fork", it's incorrectly highlighting the jewel of the escape wheel (on the bridge), and the picture for "Escape wheel" incorrectly highlights the jewel of the forth wheel (on the bridge). If you look at the oil chart for the ETA 2826 on that page it shows that no oil is to be placed on the pallet fork pivots, only for the exit stone. However, I do know that the subject of oiling is very personal, some watch makers oil the pallet pivots some don't. I do not but that's only because that's the way I've been taught. If you get good results by oiling then go for it.
@WolfeVintageWatches
@WolfeVintageWatches 3 жыл бұрын
Excellent feedback Ashley, thank you. I totally agree that if you ask 10 watchmakers, you are likely to get 14 different approaches to oiling! That said, it certainly seems that I am in the minority when it comes to lubricating the pallet pivots and will be skipping that procedure to test the results. Thanks for watching and I appreciate your comment.

@WolfeVintageWatches 3 жыл бұрын
Awesome, thanks Sergio! You're exactly right....this is based on the ETA 2472. Your comment around not lubricating the rubies/stones of the pallet fork. Can you expand a bit on that? Are you saying to lubricate just one of the stones? Which one? Thanks for the comment and for watching.

Why don't you remove balance assembly first?
@WolfeVintageWatches
@WolfeVintageWatches 3 жыл бұрын
Are you asking why I don't remove the balance from the balance cock before cleaning? I like to keep the assembly together and clean it in its entirety in One Dip separate from the main plate. Some folks prefer to keep the balance and balance cock in place on the main plate and run that through the cleaner.
@moskauuhrmacher6833

@@WolfeVintageWatches no, sir. I'm asking, why are you removing barrel bridge, train bridge and wheels before removing balance and pallet fork.
@WolfeVintageWatches
@WolfeVintageWatches 3 жыл бұрын
Oh, got it! Good question. I like to have the wheels and bridges out of the way when I remove the balance. This way I don't have to work the balance out from under components and put stress on the hairspring. I suppose there is an argument to remove the balance assembly first, before removing all the other components to be safer. But I just got into the habit of removing the balance assembly last and haven't thought much about changing it.
