It's the depth of the wah tone and the midrange of the quack that these old halo inductor wah pedals have. Modern wah pedals sound alright until you listen to these old wahs. Awesome playing again.

I think Frank Zappa was the first one to use a wah in public. Jimi got the idea of the wah from Zappa

If I remember correctly, Jimi in an interview stated that "tales of brave ulysses" was his introduction to the wah. Of course he then acquired one and mastered it!

So damn nice! I'm the one that messaged you about the '70s Vox bag yesterday for a 68 Clyde Script. From what I could tell about the inside of yours here, the '68 (haven't bought it just yet( is the same thing. Hopefully it sounds as good as yours here. Awesome! Edit: I pulled the trigger and it's on the way

Actually, the first VOX wahs were grey and made in UK at the Voxworks plant of Jennings Musical Industries in Erith, Kent. They had a thinner sound and a narrower sweep. Contrary to popular belief, they were not prototypes but production models. A friend of mine had one. I've got a rare, 1968 model (made in Italy) which is identical to a Clyde McCoy script. It's known as the Queen's Award model. The only difference is the base plate which doesn't mention Clyde McCoy but has a symbol with a crown on top from when JMI were given the Queen's award for industry in 1967. The entire circuit board is encased in resin to prevent it being copied. Mine (serial 7729) is pictured on the Vox Supreme site along with a load of other vintage VOX wahs. I won't put the link here as YT doesn't like that, but putting 'Vox supreme' into a well-known search engine will lead anyone who's interested there!

Yeah, those grey ones curiously had the inductor, transistors and capacitors wired in a in a line across the board similar to the extremely rare Vox EF-EL ones made in Italy for a short time before the fasel Jen made Era .

@@arfboucher3855 Yeah, my friend's one had the components in a line. Last time I saw him, I asked if he still had it and he said 'somewhere'! He'd moved to Germany! I had an Italian Jen for a while but sold it when I got the Vox

I see that myth of magical inductor is still persistent. It's not the inductor, it's mostly taper of the potentiometer. As far as vocal characteristic of wah, potentiometer makes it or brakes it.

I use a 15-year-old Teese RMC3 wah ... designed to sound classic Vox but adjustable with tuner pots on the inside, can get your sweep just the way you like it and fine tune it for particular pickups. Have an early 90s Les Paul Classic, wanted a tunable wah to deal with the insane hot pickups (500T and 496R) that came stock, then readjust for low-output single-coil Strat pups.. Definitely a keeper; I replaced the worn out rocker pot and footswitch a few years ago.

If it's just about the tone, the objective comment would be: "There are builders out there building wahs that have the clyde sound for 1/10th of that price". But as always, vintage gear isn't just gear...you actually have to look at it as a collectible item. It's not just the tone, but the piece of history...it's not just an expensive pedal, but the legend status...

I've heard the Fulltone Clyde is as close to perfect as you can get. I'm just a huge Vox fan and really love the late 90's early 2000's V847 ones that were made in the USA. The Made In China V847A pedals are absolute trash. Really sad honestly.

Not worth 3 grand imo and if I bought it probably would put it in a safe and never use it lol. I find myself playing my cheaper guitars and leaving more expensive ones in the case for some reason. You are a badass player man and could make any wah sound good but if that makes you feel better be down. I doubt anyone listening to you could tell though honestly. I don't own many peddles but your passion for them makes me really like the pedal pawn company.

LOL I made one using a ben wah pedal 60 dollars hehehehe changed the switch to rock switch 2 and adjusted the throw.. Or you can buy this HYPE and take a chance for several thousand dollars on something that might or might not get the right one. I ordered one from Chase and paid 500 dollars and that was part for part supposedly spot on I tried it against the one I modified and asked for my 500 dollars back.. Which he promptly sent cause id expose him otherwise ... but lookie what money can buy.. look at me look at me how special I am .... NOT........................

Law of diminishing returns. Yes it’s probably better but by how much more? 5% better? I have had several wah pedals ranging from cheap to boutique. I currently have a GCB-95 Cry Baby that I bought second hand. Is it the best I’ve had? No. Does it do the job? Absolutely! So is that Vox wah worth the extra 5% better sound? That’s up to the player. For me 5% better is not worth 100x the price of admission. I would much prefer to stay on a working man’s budget and get pedals that readily available, that I can afford to lose and abuse.
