We're changing gears this week and taking care of a little project on our 1968 Play-Mor 140 rebuild - new tires and hubcaps.
This small change makes a huge difference in the look of the camper and an even bigger difference in how it will drive (someday).

I was going to ask about what Rick said too. Did you repack the wheel bearings? Would love to see a vid on that.

I did repack them, but when I did I noticed they weren't in very good shape, so ultimately I just took them to an axel shop and had them fix it up for me. It was about $800, but I don't really have the tools to do a very good or easy job of it myself, so money well spent if you ask me. Packing bearings is easy though, and there's a ton of youtube videos explaining it.

Don't forget to repack the wheel bearings too. :-)

Thanks! Yeah I repacked them a couple of weeks after this but it didn't make for very good video. Still have the footage though if we ever run out of other projects to show 😅

What did you do to make your tires fit your other camper? That’s the problem we are having with a camper I bought. There is not enough room to get the tire in to get it mounted? Any help would be great! Thanks

The first thing you could try to do is to deflate your tires before you mount them, which is obviously not the ideal situation, but it might help you squeeze them in there. If that doesn't work (and even if it does), you may need to replace your springs, because if they're original they're probably sagging and causing the problem. The other problem (so I've been told) is that contemporary trailer tires are wider than they used to be, and there's no real way around that. BUT! You can mount a smaller car tire on your rim; although, this is not a safe or advisable solution. Car tires are built for comfort whereas trailer tires are built for strength. Car tires aren't designed for as much weight, and their sidewalls aren't as strong so you're likely to see a greater tendency for sway, and blowout situations can be somewhat more dangerous. It might be a temporary solution for you until you can get new springs. Good luck!

What size nails did you use for the framing?

Whew, that was a long time ago. Uh...long enough to hold it together but not so long as to poke out the other side, lol. I'm sorry I don't really remember. I've been using Kreg pocket hole screws more recently to assemble the framing, and with those you just want to follow their guide based on the thickness of the material you're working with. Hope that helps!

What brand tires did you decide to use

My usual tire place had a deal on Carlisle so that's what I went with. I've been happy with them.

Did you use trailer tires? I'm rebuilding a 1968 Play Mor and the wheels that are on it do not seem to be trailer tires.

Yeah they're standard trailer tires. You can technically use car tires, but it's not really safe to do that as the sidewalls are generally much more flexible and thus less resistant to crosswinds and sway.

I just bought a 1968 Palomino and the siding covers half of the tires. How can I even break the bolts free to try and get the tire out?
@TrailerTrashtoTreasure
@TrailerTrashtoTreasure 3 ай бұрын
@@dragonstepper it sounds like your springs need replacing, but you might try to move the trailer forwards or backwards to rotate the wheels until you can break loose all the nuts. Then you can lift the wheels off the ground and hopefully there'll be enough drop for you to get them off. Good luck!
