I love stoves, and lately I have gotten much more into vintage stoves. Probably the most commonly seen vintage liquid fuel stove is the Coleman 502, and I got myself a decent one off eBay. If you are looking to get into vintage stoves, this is the one I would start with.

Coleman produced quality equipment for decades. I've been using my assortment since the late 70's. My father spoke fondly of his Coleman single burner stove from World War II. He said, it was destroyed buy artillery when he left his Foxhole to give his buddy hot water to make instant coffee. The Coleman stove and his generosity saved his life. Fun fact, instant coffee was developed during World War II.

As a kid, we went camping near Sault. St. Marie, MI, early seventies. We had a cabin style tent, and the family was new at this. We froze. The next day, we bought a 502, with a metal drum that clamped on the top, for use as a heater. We still froze, Mom got pneumonia, the 502 was too small. I still have it...Got to get it out and light 'er up!

I've used three-burner, two-burner, and single-burner Coleman's, car camping and backpacking. Carried a 502 back in the early 70's backpacking in Yosemite and worked like a charm! One advantage not named was the fuel tank on the 502 was large enough that no extra fuel bottle was needed for a long weekend backpacking trip. These days if I'm going white gas, I use a Svea 123R: still heavy and still reliable, time and time again.

Thank you for sharing your experience with Coleman stoves and the Svea 123R! It's great to hear that the 502 worked well for you on a long weekend backpacking trip and that the Svea 123R has been reliable for you over time. If you don't mind me asking, which stove would you prefer to take backpacking now, and why? Also, would you recommend the 502 to someone who already has the Svea 123R, or are they different enough to justify having both? Thanks again for your insight!

@@emeryz10 502 AND Svea 123(R) together is GREAT idea. Svea is simpler and smaller but won't simmer like 502. And 502 can be run [with some work] on kerosene. Both are stoves you will pass on to your kids, grandkids, and their kids !!

Love this stove,I picked mine up almost 20 years ago at a garage sale for 5 bucks!!! All I did was clean it up like you did and had been working beautiful ever since. I kept it in my m113 track during desert storm and used it regularly and never let me down. Has to be one of the best investments I've ever made. Now it stays in my truck and there whenever I need.

If you go camping after it being stored for a while and it will not pump. Remove the pump, no tools required, go to your car or truck and pop the hood pull your oil dip stick out and put some oil on your finger and oil the pump gasket. Reinsert the pump, pump it up and your good to go.

👍👍👍 Still got and use my 8R. Bought it new in the 70's and the only maintenance that it has required was replacing the graphite seal in the burner control valve stuffing box and the gasket on the fuel tank filler cap. The 123 and 8R are first cousins .. sharing the same burner mechanism. Great stoves 😊.

They are the best single burner stove as far as reliability and control. Problem is the parts. The 502 Generator is becoming scarce and now are getting expensive, relatively easy to keep clean but when you need one expect to pay close to the price of a stove for one. They use to be all over the place, some one is manufacturing clones of them but haven't found them yet.

those crap bombs have been replaced by isobutane stoves (preferably the ones with a bottle feed extension tube, hate the "on top" ones; so yeah, just a fad. This is my absolute favorite stove. I’ve carried a lot of stoves, but this one has always been a favorite. You didn’t mention, but it has a fantastic simmer capability which I use often. I will second your recommendation for OLD COLEMAN PARTS, they are Coleman enthusiasts as well as being THE source for parts. Each year they put out a patch for years in business, and Year 12 features the 502 on it. Considering the way things are in the world, I ordered a box of spare parts for all my Coleman products. Cheers 🎄

Unfortunately this particular Coleman model is not very easy to find in Europe. The Coleman 400 and Coleman 400A stoves from the 80's are easier to find over here. Maybe the Coleman Feather 442 stove that is stil in production I believe is also something you will like. Instant lighting without pre heating as promised, good flame regulation from simmer to full blast and packable in your backpack. Only be aware that the fuel regulation block isn't damaged by regular pump fuel. The flame regulatiing is then lost. After the liquid fuel stove addiction has reached you many more will follow. Kerosene space heaters, kerosene lamps, Alladdin mantle lamps, kerosene lanterns, Chinese made remakes of classic liquid stoves, (classic) propane/ butane gas stoves and probably some I don't know about yet.

I hate to say it but the new Coleman stoves are crap I have bought two different models from two different places both two burner duel-fuel. One has a sutty yellow flame from the union between the generator and the manifold and before you say anything I'm 57 and grew up using Coleman stoves and lamps. the second one leaks liquid fuel out of the manifold. Now for warranty work they want you to print up a repair order fill it out and include a $50.00 check or money order and your receipt then they will take a look and decide if it's a warranty item or not. Get this to ship them just one stove from PDX and the check the total is like $40.00 less than the price to replace the stove with another one.
