Aviations most dependable General Aviation Motor!
(From Wiki)
The Continental O-170 engine is the collective military designation for a family of small aircraft engines, known under the company designation of A50, A65, A75 and A80. The line was designed and built by Continental Motors commencing in the 1940s. It was employed as the powerplant for civil and military light aircraft.
The horizontally opposed, four-cylinder engines in this family are all identical in appearance, bore, stroke, dry weight, and piston displacement. All feature a bottom-mounted updraft carburetor fuel delivery system. The higher power variants differ only in compression ratio and maximum allowable rpm, plus minor modifications. The lower power versions are fully convertible to the higher rated versions.
Design and development
In all models of this family of engines the cylinder heads are of aluminum alloy, screwed and shrunk onto steel barrels. Spark plug inserts and intake valve seats are made from aluminum-bronze alloy, while the exhaust valve seats are steel. The engines all employ hydraulic tappets which operate in aluminum guides that are machined into the crankcase. The tappets are built from four parts, a cam follower body, cup, cylinder, and piston and operate with clearances of 0.03 in (1 mm) to 0.11 in (3 mm). The pushrods are steel and feature pressed-in ball ends.
Lubricating oil is delivered under pressure from the 4 US qt (3.79 L) oil sump to the drive bearings and the crankpins through the crankshaft. The cylinder walls and pistons are spray lubricated. Normal operating oil pressure is 35 psi, with minimum idle oil pressure 10 psi.

Was very cool to learn in your AOPA video that she came from the factory with a Franklin! My dad has a Stinson 108 with a Franklin and you really don’t see those engines much anymore. Beautiful cub !

Thanks! Yeah, I'm told they were the smoothest running engines on the Cub but kind of a headache now because of lack of parts. I believe (I have to check) that Franklin had a factory here in NJ.

In the early 1970's I was instructed when adding oil to the J-3, to only use non-detergent oil ( the only brand oil the small airport I worked at for flying time had was Aeroshell sae 80 ( winter ) and Aeroshell sae 100 ( summer). They were in red cans vs white cans that were for detergent oil. Yep---cans ( that shows my age ), hey we also had the pink 80 octane fuel along with the green 100 octane , not to be confused with the 100LL which is blue. I was actively flying when the 80 octane fuel was discontinued. Very nice and well kept engine ---well done !!!

Wow. Thanks for this. I have the same engine in an L8A, and this is my first full season running it. Now I know oil all over is not so worrying as well as the fact it will spit itself down to 3.5 qts no matter what I put in it. I'm happy to have watched. What oil temp do you see in summer? I was running about 200 with OAT of 95 on the ground. Still in the green, but a couple L8 pals are at 190. I'm pretty sure the gauge is off, but the oil gets thin enough I lose almost half the oil pressure.

Primer is the copper line entering the port side of the Stromberg. Aluminum loop is line to oil pressure probe.

@@dcannon1 Yeah The YT editor (I'll figure it out eventually) cut out the inside shot of the Primer knob, lol. I unfortunately know all too well about the oil pressure probe, and hopefully don't need to replace that ever again...

My C-85-12 (stroked) is happy with 3 quarts as well. You mentioned your oil temp being low in the winter mos. Have you ever tried taping the intake on the cowl? I’ve seen guys do this. Beautiful plane Joe!!

I have a little plate that goes on front of Oil Cooler area but not sure how much that actually does. Poor cylinders clacking around in there during the winter 😂😂

Nice video Joe, why do you change oil brands in the summer/winter?
@Bananasssssssss

I did it as a rec from my A&P. The Phillips seems to be a better cold weather Oil. I have noticed Oil Pressure seems to also stay a little higher when its really hot out (With the Aeroshell)

You must put a lot into keeping that beauty clean. From the cockpit perspective, on the right side of the bulkhead, I saw a tube with what I'd call a "relief wrap". Is that the fuel line?
@Bananasssssssss

Try! and I'm not Sure what line you're referring to. Might be an oil line?

@@Bananasssssssss at 1:48 it looks like automotive hyd brake line, attached with a blue anodized fitting. It slopes down then makes an upward CCW loop and disappears towards the engine. It caught my attention because I just replaced a brake line on my Jeep. I made a loop just like yours to allow the tubing to have a little built-in flex.

@@Bananasssssssss oh, that's it. The oil temp gauge would be right there, on the interior. I really love seeing what lies under the cowling. Thanks for the video & the answer too! If you have any friends that are restoring a Cub, I bet a lot of us would love to see a close up of what lies under the fabric! P.S. you probably know the book "Flight of Passage" by Rinker Buck. If not, it's a great read for anyone.
