Vintage Electric Drill Restoration [HITACHI Drill]

Do you know what inside in this vintage drill? It is 65mm electric drill 100V, 2.5AMP, 50/60Hz, 2200RPM, Hitachi Luh3. In this videos I recorded it step by step, the process of inside cleaning & outside restoration.
I hope you find something useful & enjoy with this video!
I am happy to receive your feedbacks, advices, suggestions to improve myself.

You did a nice, relatively thorough job. The motor is old, but you prolonged the drills life immensely, and it is fine for years of medium-duty work. Thank you for the demonstration.

That's a real restoration ! A risky challenge with an unknown old electrical tool. Technical solutions needed. You're among the small circle of masters on YT with Hand Tools rescue, Black Beard Projects, Tysy Tube Restoration and a few others.

That is a nice art-deco style drill. Looks like something Flash Gordon would use as a ray-gun. Nice restoration.

Nice drill, but, since you were in there already and went through the trouble of pulling two of the three bearings, you should have changed them. And the brushes, also while you were in there. Also it's a good idea to not brush the windings as you can damage the wire insulation and cause a short. A better idea would be to use a spray cleaner that's specially made for cleaning electric motors.

yea if youre going to go through all that trouble taking bearings off refurb the motor for sure otherwise it wont last much longer

Wait, wait. Before I even watch, or even read comments - let me guess. If you took it all apart and replaced bearings, you're dumb for taking apart a perfectly good tool. You shouldn't call it a "restoration". If you didn't replace anything, but just cleaned it up, you are dumb for not replacing the bearings and stuff. You shouldn't call it a "restoration". Basically, you just should buy it and use it as is. If you try to make it look good, you are just "jumping on this restoration craze". You should just keep that stuff to yourself. Don't ever share it. You're somehow bad if you do. People are dumb. You make good videos that I like watching. Now, I'm gonna watch this one. ;)

One Rule: Bearings are pulled and pushed. Never hammered. To nice to work with it!

these motors in older power tools all look like a similar design. Is this called a brushless motor? Also are the motor designs the same in newer tools today?

Actually, it's the opposite. These are all brush motors. Modern tools, depending on price, either use brushless, which are more complex but give more force for less power, or use a cheaper version of the brush motor.

@@martypines2321 I don't know of any handheld power tools that use brushless motors. All the ones I have seen using series-wound brushed motors.

The strands of wire will break with use and the rubber insulation will deteriorate with age, in the power cord. A new grounded power cord will make it safer. I would have checked the windings for short circuit to the metal case, with an ohmmeter and any other shorts to the metal case. Until then, don't operate the drill where you will be standing at ground potential, such as, concrete basement floor or outside.

314Tazo this is the problem with a lot of these “restoration channels” you never see them testing electrical components before the deep clean. He was lucky with this one but I’ve had a tingle of old tools like this before. New bearings and new cable would have had this drill back like new.
