I looked for this because when I was a kid i had a go cart that sucked but a neighbor kid on the next street over had one of these carts with the McCulloch engine on it that screamed. I think that these were the fastest go carts available back then. I was jealous of that kid back then and now I'm jealous of you goddamnit!😝

Bought my first go-kart in 58 can't remember what make then in 59 or 60 bought a Blitz Kart from Toby's Kart shop in Darien Connecticut. I lived in Stratford at the time if my memory serves me correctly. There was a factory parking lot in Stamford Connecticut right off I-95 it was like run what you brung. Those were the best days, you didn't have To Be A Millionaire to be competitive. Was following Lake Speed's career thought that was the best name ever for a Kart Racer

We saw Lake Speed at the Vintage Karting Association's event in Brodhead, WI back in July. Lake still has it on track, and is a very gracious down to earth person on top of that, willing to talk with anyone.

When they are less than half the weight of a modern kart and powered with a two stroke, they can get up and go quickly. You will need to watch the dual rear engine kart races that we uploaded recently. Same style of kart, but with two engines instead of one.

You may be surprised. It’s small but we do have the Vintage Karting Association (VKA) for support and in the eastern half of the U.S. there are vintage kart races run almost twice a month when the snow is not falling. Please checkout some of other videos, especially those listed with the VKA in the title to get a taste of what is happening the world of vintage karting.

@@PsychosisPC05 My dad raced these back in the early through mid 60's. His had two Westbend engines that were modified to run on nitro-methane, essentially model airplane Top Fuel Dragster fuel. He'd let my brother and I drive it (ages 6 and 9) with one engine running. Started the engines with an off-board car starter mounted to a hand truck.

Depends, so many of the old karts have been modified over the years to become other things, some modified horribly, some modified well. Its possible that the engine and what is on the engine may have more value if in good condition. Checkout vintagekartforum.com and the Vintage Karting Association both on the web and their Facebook page.

Not exactly period correct with the pipe, porch and brakes but very cool 👍. I stared racing in ‘79 and continued until the late 80 s. I was weed eating the yard the other day and was using some gas that had a little different oil than I normally use. The smell brought back memories of the Klotz I used to use. Can’t wait to weed eat again 😂

I remember my Dad taking me for a ride when I was little (I'm 40 he's 73 - now we race real cars together lol) Any closer up pics of how the engine is mounted? Ours had elongated the holes on the side of the engine so bad it just vibrates itself lose and the chain pops. The header rattles itself lose too. Planning a full resto soon. Thanks for any info!

+n20cpri Karting you can do pretty much forever and its usually easier on your wallet than "real cars" and gives you the same sensation. We actually race karts like this one competitively still along with the modern versions also. Checkout the Vintage Karting Association for races as they have races throughout the year from coast to coast, primarily in the Midwest. As to the pics of this kart, we've actually sold it a few years ago, but we have a few pics of a variety of karts on our Facebook page "Welte Racing" which is also linked to my KZfaq Channel's main page. Another good source would be the Vintage Karting Association's Facebook page, you'll find vintage karters are good at helping with restoration and some of the parts are still made or hidden in the back in stock. For instance GEM made lots of parts for the old karts, Viking Kart Products still sells GEM parts and Dart/Rupps are still made by RobRon.

Carter Kosick We actually have to have someone else weld the aluminum as we are not aluminum welders. We do all of the sizing, cutting from sheet aluminum, bending, valve location, and polishing after its welded. DCA Racing in La Crosse, WI is who we have do the welding, they also add the filler neck to the tank and pressure/leak test it to check their welds. DCA is a stock car race fab shop and street rod shop.

@PsychosisPC05
@PsychosisPC05 8 жыл бұрын
bill heatherly Some you have to make. Some reference you can find through the Vintage Karts Forum and Vintage Karting Assoc. on the web, they are also a good source for old parts and engines. The Vintage Karting Events are a good place to find old parts and pieces. Clutches you can get from Max Torque for West Bends and McCullochs. Darts and most Rupp parts you can still get from RobRon who has all the old Rupp tools and dies, Bug parts are around, King Karts are still being made, and some Fox kart parts are being remanufactured still. You can also click my channel and find our face-book page, as we build, restore, and sell some karts. There are also some vintage karting FB pages that are pretty good too.

I'm impressed with the design of the Rupp. My first drive in a kart was a 1960 Bonanza with a Mac 90 direct drive. What clutch are you using? The front porch looks like it belongs there.
@PsychosisPC05
@PsychosisPC05 4 жыл бұрын
Back then for this setup, it was dry Max Torque clutch. Now for things that we run a pipe on, we found an oil clutch old Hartman and are actually switching to a Burco in the future. Yea you need to be about 5 ft tall to race this kart comfortably without the front porch, its very much for short legged people, and the seat position is not the best. The later Rupps were much better.
@Miatacrosser
@Miatacrosser 4 жыл бұрын
@@PsychosisPC05 I used Burcos mostly. Once you get them properly weighted they are pretty consistant. Start with just the screws and only add weight if it's slipping too much but be careful cause once they get hot and break down the oil it's all over. Might as well run direct drive. The Hartman requires a lot of new to be good. It was part of a fast setup in my time but so were Burcos and some Horstmans. It sounded like that Hartman was pretty well setup. Personally I'd stick with that unless it's impossible to find parts. I forgot to ask. 9 or 10 tooth gear?
@PsychosisPC05
@PsychosisPC05 4 жыл бұрын
@@Miatacrosser 9 tooth mostly. I think we have like 6 or 7 Hartman's and only 2 that are not totally worn out. Hard around here to find good parts for them. The Burco is a different story, so we are going to be switching to that. What we run on our duals with the West Bend 820s are a hybrid of the Hartman oil clutch essentially a missmash of others internal components that work in the Hartman drum. The problem with those components are they don't fit the McCulloch Mc91 taper on the crankshaft very well. They fit the West Bend taper really well. Sounds like you have been around this a bit, please checkout some of other videos on the old vintage karts.

@@PsychosisPC05 ran here in California in local and Northwest Division IKF races between '72-'79. Home track was Kerman. But me and a bunch of us ran all over the State from Sacramento to San Diego. I started in Reed Light with a Bug Stinger, Mac 91B1, Burco clutch. In '75 I decided I wanted to give road racing motorcycles a try so missed the next two years finding out I like 4 wheels a lot better(not that I didn't have fun trying). In late '76 I bought a Margay Panther X, two brand new Komet K-78 rotary valve engines and tried Burco but ended up using a Horstman 3 disc oil clutch. Problem with the Horstman was the 3-disc was heavy so that and not being perfect with the crank taper cost me a big win at Salinas when the crank broke at the key. Horstman tried to beef up their two disk but it just couldn't handle the torque of those Komets. I ended up going back to Burco but I could never get it to work as good as that Horstman. I loved the time I raced go-karts. We had a race team for heavy and light classes. I only quit to start a family but I often think about all the great races I ran and especially the races I was blessed to win. Thanks for the link. I'll pop over there

@PsychosisPC05

Speed depends on the track and gearing. Mc10s made pretty good power back in the day. Power would depend on whether they were stock or modified and what fuel was run, what and how many carbs.

Ya they got that reed design down on the 91b1. Plus you could run alchohol/nitro fuel with no problems due to their changes in the internals of the Carb. Fast for a reed valve engine. No comparison to the piston port and rotary port engines though
