My friend Jean-Paul asked me ( Denis Chang ) to record a bunch of his guitars so it was a lot of fun for me to try out all sorts of guitars... He is preparing a website to display his collection. You can email him for more information or purchasing info (not all of them are for sale)

The very first guitar is my own AJL X-O that I absolutely love!!!
This is done informally so the quality is not perfect (still better than most videos made using amateur equipment). Furthermore, like an idiot, I forgot to bring a guitar pick and had to use one of those ultra thin singer songwriter style floppy picks hence the strange pick noise in the rhythm playing...
I used an Audio Technica pro 70 to capture sound, which is great for live situations but in this case, it doesn't capture the true characteristics of the instruments. The videos will be done with better microphones in a proper acoustic setting eventually.. But for now you get an idea of how these guitars sound.
Regarding the recording, we used the same recording settings for every instrument. No volume/gain adjustments. No EQ , just a little bit of clean-up of ambient noise (such as the AC in the background) and a tiny hint of room reverb.
Most of the instruments were fantastically restored / repaired by Montreal luthier Martin Tremblay www.tremblayluthier.com
The idea was to play the same thing on various guitars. The solo section is the patrus53 theme by my buddy Rino Van Hooijdonk. The rhythm section is Minor Swing by Django Reinhardt / Stephane Grappelli
For those who don't know anything about these guitars, these are the type of instruments used by legendary manouche guitarist Django Reinhardt. Most of these instruments are also from his era. (1930s/40s). These are steel string instruments NOT nylon.

Thank you for demonstrating. It is great to hear and compare the same thing played on different guitars. Those are some really nice guitars too.

To me basically all of those guitars sound about the same. They all produce that barking percussive and ugly noise that makes these instruments so wonderful and so easy to be discerned . Just love it.

I really like the first 40s Busato Moyen. the Sonoran has a great deep sound for a room but the Di Mauro Django sounds like it comes from a Wood Allen movie--- great for recordings. Thanks D.

Lol, that Busato Moyen model 1940 has traveled a lot! I bought it from Mano (Guitare Mano, garantie sans defauts! 🤣) at the 2006 Samois Festival. We restored it, basically a brand new fretboard (copying the original design)and various appointments, new set up. I sold it to Caravan Guitars in Chicago back in 2007 or 8
