In this video we're taking a look at a vintage kitchen aid stand mixer that I bought from eBay. I paid £75 for it, and it came with all of the accessories.
I was originally looking for a broken unit, but even those seem to sell for £60 or so with no accessories, so it seemed like this deal was too good to pass up!
The unit has a missing speed know but you can only buy a whole speed lever. The unit is 34 years old and is in very good condition and built like a tank!
Let's service it and see what 34 year old grease looks like... Urrrgghh!

Kitchen aid are amazingly well built machines and probably the best mixer on the market for both home use and small commercial, the modern one have nylon cogs/gears. The old ones, like this will last forever!! You will never need to buy another mixer. The ex-wife used to have one for making custom cakes, I’ve been after one for quiet a while but don’t want to pay the cost of them when new 😆.

Fascinating that they don’t make stuff like they used too, well done and very well explained. I have my parents old 1000w Panasonic combination microwave all song and dancing, it was purchased from John Lewis in 2006 and it’s used daily and still going strong, I replaced the turntable motor as it was starting to stop and start turning…..

I bought an ender 5 to do a repair video on, but it turned out it had the 8 bit board like the ender 3 I looked at for a friend so I just upgraded it to the 32 bit board and didn't bother doing a video on it. Although I did have to compile the firmware, as the BLTouch version on the ender site didn't work correctly.

Very good video! Nice speed and explanation so the viewer can work along while watching. My same mixer from 1995 is running strong. I bought it as a factory refurb in 1997. Mine is the dark gray crinkle paint (no finger prints) Pro-Line Series mixer. Same as yours just a different color. I use it to bake bread 2-3 times weekly. They say these older ones were built much better than the new ones. I expect this mixer will last me the rest of my life! THANKS for this video. Have fun baking!!

I’ve watched several videos about this mixer, and none of them mentioned how to adjust the revolutions per second. Good to know. I’m also shocked by that gear being metal and not nylon. I imagine it serves that same purpose as shear pins on a snowblower. If something jams it, the sacrificial piece saves the motor/trans. Wonderful video. Thank you.

They changed to nylon pinion gear to prevent the damage to the operator. They were so powerful with the case hardened steel pinion, it was strong enough to pull you into the mixing bowl with your bread dough. Not a good look for the cooking challenged amongst us. 🙂

yes, they changed to the nylon gear as a weak point to protect the gear box. and as a side note, if you are replacing a stripped nylon gear, never buy an aftermarket one. get the oem part from kitchen aid or your going to be doing it again in a few weeks. Ask me how I know!

Thanks Bill👍 I thought that's why they must have changed it. Seems that the unit I have must have gotten jammed at some point by the way the two pins on the main shaft looked. Sorry to hear about your experience with the original nylon cog, but glad you got your unit back up and running in the end🙂

The low end Kitchen Aid mixers these days use cheap components built into a pot metal shell that looks like the original. But all it takes is one stiff batch of cookie dough to burn them right out. The higher end ones still seem to be good - but they're doing the brand no favors by selling the cheap ones.

Thermal fuse next to the motor had gone, but it was a bit of a nightmare to get into as there was clips over the screws that lock in once they were pushed into place. I had to pry them out it wasn't too bad of a mess but I know what you are saying.

I really enjoy your approach and attention to detail even including the food safe grease, you must of heard me say I wonder if that is food safe as 10 mins later you clarified. Nice job, thank you for the video Regarding the replacement gear it's probably plastic to save on cost, much cheaper to mold a nylon gear than to machine one or make it from sintered metal, some sewing machines used a similar nylon gear and over time the plastic shrunk and the gear cracked making the machine unusable.

Yes agree, if you bought a modern day mixer, I'd be amazed if you got a couple of years out of it before it was ready to go in the bin. I have one of those "Ninja" food processors. The blending jug cracked on the 3rd use around the base where the motor shaft goes through, and food processor bowl a bit broke off where the lid attaches. Very poor quality IMHO.

Good to see this! Yes, these things are tanks. You got a good price as well. I just got back from the flea market and saw three for sale, two were the non-lift bowl types. You don't really have to change the grease, since they do come with a lifetime amount, but I agree if I were to open it up I would too. If I recall, the reason why these are so tough and easy to repair is the original models were made by Hobart, the manufacturer for large commercial stand mixers, and the design hasn't changed much in 100 years. I am a bit curious as to what you're going to make with it?

I too started baking my own bread using an Argos bread maker,i also learned a hellavalot from John's channel. I use the bread maker just to mix the dough then i form my loaf shape and bake in a gas fan oven. The reason i do this is because i dont like the shape of the loaf when cooking in the bread maker. I took a loaf and some crusty rolls around to my Mum's last week, and now the crazy woman expects a fresh loaf every day . WHAT HAVE I DONE ?#*"@#!😂

Yes I like John's channel. It started because we were getting overrun with our chickens laying loads of eggs and I searched how to make quiches. I'd highly recommend John's quiches if you haven't tried them. Cheese and bacon are awesome! Lol @ your mum wanting fresh bread every day 😂😂😂

Are you on Just Eat or Deliveroo Mick?

😂😂😂Funny you should say that.. we do actually have a just eat bag that a friend got for us, because any decent takeaway is about 30 or 40 mins drive from where we live and it was usually cold time we got it back home. It's partly one of the reasons why I started baking as there's nothing really decent for miles around. Even the nearest large supermarket is 20 miles away... But I can now make a decent pizza, and can cook some Chinese food now too.

Just looked up the name that was stuck on the mixer and it could've belonged to a 'famous' chef

I just replaced with a similar amount to what was there originally. I'm not too sure why that amount.

The Nylon cog is what's known as a Mechanical fuse, it's made to fail to reduce breakage, I've seen many in my career with a large well known office product/automation machine company. So when are the Subscribers coming over for you first cake? LMFIAO

😂😂😂Yes I was thinking it might have been used as a mechanical fuse as you call it. I've used it to make a wicked carrot cake which I'd highly recommend from cupcake Jemma's KZfaq channel. 🙂

that gear is not metal. it's just gray. I was wanting to see how to pull the field assembly, but you didn't pull the armature. There's a bearing and bushing in there need some loving. OR am I wrong?

The gear was definitely metal not plastic or nylon like on later models. I'm not sure about the bushings in the motor.

oh. I didn't realize you were an expert on these. As opposed to the experts on here that have rebuilt hundreds of them and said KA never made a metal gear. They were always sacrificial. My apologies. And that machine isn't all that old. It's not Hobart. @@BuyitFixit
