My first He-Man and Masters of the Universe restoration repair! I found this MOTU vintage She-Ra doll on eBay after Tig suggested, in a comment, that I give the line a try. I wasn't sure if I was just going to repaint her or do a little more -- in the end, I decided to recreate the clothes (with some significant artistic license!). I used acrylic paints and I managed to find the perfect red organza and... I have enough to make myself a cape now :P I also did a quick tiara that has little to do with the original one but matches the belt and is shiiiiinyyy.

Yeah, that's why the character design is very important. It determines how they will be viewed as and also gives away the priorities of the creator and show.

The crown on the original was designed to match the little included comic books, where Adora wore the tiara in its normal state, and She-Ra wore it flipped over with the eye holes masking her identity. Which was kind of dumb and didn't work with the actual doll very well... but you *could* wear the tiara as a ring!

Thank you! I thinks this one's hair was also shorter than the original. If I started all over again, I would rehair her, I think. She has a soft vinyl head, it should be pretty easy to do. I just wasn't sure what type of hair to use as I've only rehaired ponies but it felt different. I would have loved to have one of these when little! She looks really strong :D

She looks gorgeous! I love the new crown as well-might take some notes for when I restore my She-ra figures ^^. I picked them up from a vintage toy shop and while Shera has her skirt and her shield she's missing everything else, and the Catra, Bow, and Glimmer I got with her all only have their shields/bow's quiver, no fabric clothes. Never thought of simply remaking what was lost by their previous owner.

@@RetroGeekCrafts Will do when I can get around to them! And yeah it was really lucky-someone had just dropped off their whole She-ra collection and they had a ton of different characters like Entrapta, Angela, Frosta, Flutterina, though I grabbed the dolls I did mostly since they were my favorites. I got a good deal on all 4 too, only around $25 or so with whatever accessories I could match to them. ^^

You did a fantastic job on her! But I'll give you a little advice... The first thing you had to do is to remove her head to work more easily on the paint of her body. Another important thing about working on dolls' hair is to wash it with hot water to get it nice and soft, but you did it well by not forgetting to use conditioner and brush the hair.
@RetroGeekCrafts
@RetroGeekCrafts 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Roberto! I didn't know the head could be removed! This is the first doll I "repair". Good to know 😊 I used hot water in the container, and I did a few other pases off-camera but then after working on the clothes the hair had gone wild again xD I learned a lot, though!
@yod4166
@yod4166 2 жыл бұрын
@@RetroGeekCrafts If you end up popping the heads off using a hair dryer on high heat will help soften the plastic so you don’t damage it. But unless it’s getting in the way it’s pretty unnecessary to take the head off. Plus each kind of doll will have a different mechanism holding it in place so it can get tricky to take them off with no damage. Anyhow I love your restorations and I’m excited to see what new ones you do (:

They're just dolls for boys. I said I'm allowed to play with the Thundercats are female characters in with the ThunderCats. And there's also female characters in with He-Man. Of course, you can play with any toys you like! It's sometmes nice to see female characters in a serie when you're a girl but you can like any story and any toy, they are all made for humans :) It's always good to have different stories and points of view. I collect some "girly" things like ponies and carebears and I also collect Saint Seiya (a japanese series about martial fighters/knights) , Star Wars, and He-Man. Don't worry if you can't get the figures you want to have, you will be able to. In the meantime, keep liking everything you like :)

As an owner of several original She-Ra dolls, the only things that looked *really* off is that the belt and skirt, and the color of the vinyl appliques. The fabric for the skirt was right, just not how the wiggles were made... and to be honest, as a little girl I'd have loved your version of the tiara more than the one that she came with! Still, this is an impressive rescue of a doll in need of some real love, and that fabric for the cape? My goodness that's exact. I can still remember how it feels in my hands, all soft and crinkly at the same time.
@RetroGeekCrafts

Yes, I have to agree on both things. I worked with the materials I could find and references from the internet, so there was a lot of... improvisaation involved :P The doll itself is the restauration, the clothes are my take. The fabric for the cape I felt was the biggest achievement :P Thank you for your comment!

I still have my original She-Ra dolls collection and mini comic books. 8 mini comic books. I have almost 9 dolls, the little owl character with rainbow color toy in my collections. I saved these She-Ra dolls when I was very young kid. I don't quite remember how old I was I guess 7-10 years old. I saved in clear shoe box with my barbie dolls very long time in pretty good conditions. The rubber bands never stay good. Always changed it before they break. I like the original She-Ra cartoons not the new version of her. It looks to weird, not so good as the originally made sorry if other people like the remake. The reboots not always that great at all. I'm glad I saved the original mini dolls that long in pretty good condition as I grew older and take good care of these dolls and remember my favorite classic 1988 cartoons and dolls long time as I grew up older. I loved it. I'm glad I watch these restoration dolls. I remember the certain amount of good time as I was little girl and teenager and my adult life things has changed alot. Have a wonder day everybody.

Thank you for your lovely message :) I haven't watched the new version of She-Ra and, to be honest, I haven't seen the old one in YEARS either but I have great memories. I think I generally prefer the older ones because those are the ones I have the most emotional connection with - I'm happy for the new generations to create their own good memories with the new versions. I'm really glad you still have your original dolls and the comics!! And the owl is SO CUTE, I saw one on eBay, I'll probably get it even if it's in good condition :)

I'm curious- do you know why green was the chosen color for the undercoat? it just seems so random- I'm not well versed in the toy painting universe.
@RetroGeekCrafts
@RetroGeekCrafts 2 жыл бұрын
That makes two of us :P My guess would be that bronze has a general greenish tone (especially when oxidized) and this was trying to imitate that material? It could be that the green pigment somehow helped the shiny one, like instead of a base layer it was a paint component.

Do you have a suggestion on fixing vintage Swiftwind’s wings that have bent or bowed?
@RetroGeekCrafts

I haven't had a chance to see Swiftwind in person so I don't know what the material is. With vinyl, sometimes you can put it in hot water and that helps reshape it. That might work?

Well, I got materials for about 20 more dolls xD (If I found a way to make the skirt more easily, I'd use it to create sets for people who can't find original clothes). The acrylics are $3 a bottle (I owned them all from before), the fabrics and shiny paper were maybe $15 - again, for quantity. It comes up to about the same price as the more compete doll, minus the time. But it was fun and now the doll is in displayable condition 😊

Hola!

@@RetroGeekCrafts I customise and restore Masters of the Universe toys. I buy lots of bundles of random toys to get the parts I need. Somewhere along the line I picked up a white G1 (I think) MLP that I thought would be good for a custom. In a lot of spare toy parts I picked up a glittery saddle with wings and it fit the pony. I was thinking of making it into My Little Swift Wind, a She-Ra crossover. However I have so many projects to work on I need to pass some of them along to others who may be able to complete the idea.

You know since the hair on dolls is plastic it is way more effective to wash with laundry detergent and condition with fabric softener. Human products work but tend to not work as well on fabrics including plastic. This is also how people treat plastic wigs
@RetroGeekCrafts
@RetroGeekCrafts 2 жыл бұрын
I will try this for my next pony. I use cheap conditioner, which has a lot of silicone - same as laundry detergent. But it's probably easier to just have some softener around for dolls :)
