Home. I left in '83 and sadly things haven't changed much. I'll always love my city. #eastboogie

The St. Louis TV station that had Donahue's show at the time, KSDK, the NBC affiliate, (and I see this is a VHS rip from KSDK's own showing), re-aired this at least twice. Something made me want to look and see if this episode was on KZfaq, and thankfully, it is. I thought this was in 1989, but turns out it was November 1990. But, I remember watching that part where Carl Officer says he didn't need his salary, and the woman in the audience yelled out, "well why don't you give it back to the city so they can pick up our trash?" Then the whole audience started whooping and hollering. Back when I first saw this, as (now I realize) a 13-year old, I figured that the mayor's salary probably wouldn't pay for one hour of trash collection service. Now, as a 44-year old, I see why ESL is the way it is and has been for a long time: Because it's full of people so economically illiterate that they think that the mayor's salary can pay for sustained trash collection service.

I have family in E. St Louis...Carl E. Officer leaving office was the BEST thing that could've happened to the city. They've made some progress in the years since but they still have quite a way to go.

Incredible that he made issues like these compete with soap operas and game shows.

@@mikestevenson576 I had a dream I was on the Phil Donahue show in 1991 and was on the stage but Phil Donahue was mumbling something creepy.. anyway what was it like in 1990? Seems like a better time

@@elgeneralxx Everyone's had that dream. The racial and gender progress since 1990 has been spectacular. Night and day. That aside, you're right. Wealth gap was way smaller in 1990. Lots more decent jobs. Politics was way more conciliatory. Dialogue was more high minded. Movies didn't need someone in a superhero costume to get a theatrical release. There was some euphoria about the Berlin Wall coming down. 1990 wasn't so futile.
