I found this at goodwill and had to have it. the first phone I ever got was a clear phone and when it rang it would light up. this brought back memories so I grabbed it as soon as I saw it.

Some consumers actually bought these in the 80s and 90s!

I never heard of that but they sold clear phones in the store and it was my first phone. I couldn't pass that up.

I'm from Malaysia, my mom use to be a factory worker who manufacture this kind of phones, and they did sold this to the public from what my mom recalled. She even got one as a gift from the company. It's a neat phone to be sure. It's so nostalgic to finally see it again.

I'm pretty sure this particular clear phone was made for the novelty of it directed towards the general public, as far as I know they didn't make prison electronics.

Since this one has colorful internal components, I don't think this was made for prisons. I can find almost all other types of clear electronics for prisoners (on google) , but not landline phones 🤷♂

This type of phone was made for kids. There used to be this company that sold DIY tech so kids could learn how they worked as they put it together, and it was all transparent. I had one of these phones as a kid but it hardly worked lol, and tried the same with a DIY film camera back then, which also hardly worked. They were not known for quality control lol. They just had these things in stores like Toys R Us at the science section, not surprised to see if Radio Shack had similar kits.
