Vintage Roadtrips - 1962 Seattle World's Fair

This film is of a family vacation taken by my grandparents and their family in 1962. In the true spirit of family vacations of yesteryear, they loaded the family in the 1960 Ford Fairlane for the yearly roadtrip, leaving Oklahoma to visit many destinations along the way. Locations include: Lucky Peak Project near Boise, ID, McNary Lock and Dam near Umatilla, OR, the sights of the 1962 Seattle World's Fair, Similik Beach, a bit of Canada, Grand Coulee Dam, Rock Creek Canyon in Custer National Forest, Yellowstone National Park, and there is even footage of the shop fronts and Boot Hill in Dodge City, Kansas. You'll see lots of fantastic street scenes, interesting vehicles, and some vintage shots of local businesses in the northwest, and even a wild black bear up close!
This was originally shot on Kodachrome 8mm. The film was deteriorated and somewhat damaged from years of viewing and storage, though the transfer is far from perfect, I did my best with it.
Enjoy this truly authentic piece of Americana!

Old Seattle Boomer here...this is such a fine time capsule, showing how folks back then knew how to do a vacation!...I am a lifetime Seattle person, and attended the Fair a couple of times. It really was the greatest civic event of the 20th century, for Seattle!...10,000,000 people, from all over the US, and even some foreign countries, had a great time there!...your relatives actually did not shoot much film of the Fair, but they certainly were taken by the surrounding countryside, and the drive to get to Seattle was just wonderful!..We live in such a beautiful country, and I am glad your grandparents knew that, and enjoyed taking their time to admire so many beautiful places. You were a lucky person, to have such thoughtful relatives!

Interesting. My parents did the 1962 Seattle World Fair trip too. They drove from Minnesota though in a 1961 VW Beatle. Stops included the Grand Coulee dam, Glacier National Park, the World Fair, a beach in Oregon, a Redwood forest, then San Francisco, and finally Yellowstone. Three weeks on a shoestring.

Same...I was 12 and my parents and 3 sisters always drove to visit my grandparents in Tacoma every summer..Dad always had a Studebaker wagon 😂 1962 we got to go to Vancouver B.C. and the world's fair in Seattle 😂

8:47 I have been trying for so long to find a photo of an Evergreen State class vessel with the century 21 branding for a couple of years now, I knew they wore it but had never seen it - so cool! This was awesome, I drive from the PNW to the SouthWest a couple times a year, cool to see roads I recognize so long ago.

So cool ..ty for sharing. My parents 3 sister and I (being 12 ) drove from San Diego to tacoma every summer...1962 we got to go to Vancouver B.C. and the world's fair...I got to see most of the west coast as a young kid...always in a Studebaker wagon 😂

Greetings from Seattle! Just stumbled onto this. I'm originally from Oklahoma City, where I was born in 1952. A lot of the children seen in this footage would have been around my age (10) in 1962. I made my way to Seattle in 2009, across Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho and Oregon. Thanks for this! Enjoyed it.

I was born in Seattle 1964. Was great to recognize the things that cant be changed. Great job making a permanent memory. People don't realize now how much planning it took to make that kind of trip in 1962. They had to have started well over a year before. All they had was a phone and US Mail. I'm sure there were obstacles and issues along the way. I did a 4k road trip around the entire West in summer of 1975 with my mom and sisters for 6 weeks. Will never forget it. My sister punched me at least 5 different times in the back seat. Thank you for sharing.

I was at the fair in the summer of 1962. I was about the same age as the two boys I saw in this video (9yo). Who knows, we might have crossed paths on that very day! I recognized just about every scene shown that was in WA state, as I was born and raised here. Thanks for the video! Oh, that park with the high peaks looked very familiar. Was that Glacier Nat'l Park? That picture of Similk (you had an extra "i" in there) Beach, I live just 3 miles from there today. Anacortes, WA. You were on the tide flats which nowadays is off limits to humans. It's a designated wildlife sanctuary now. And the refinery in the background was only a few years old at that time.

Back when the Space Needle looked it best in its classic century 21 paint scheme and when the torch would be lit at the top of the needle, looked more tall and slender before the 100 foot level restaurant was built years later. The World's Fair was shut down on October 12 , 1962 because of the Columbus Day windstorm where winds in Seattle reached 100 knots. It was a Typhoon that came from Japan weakened then rejuvenation itself and moved inland hitting Northern California,Oregon,Washington and British Columbia calling it the West Coast Disaster.

I went to the World's Fair in Seattle when I had to get an operation. My mom and dad were very groovy. And the music choices on this video is awesome.

Looks like I’m a little late to the party here, but I have to say thanks for posting this. I was born and raised outside of Atlanta, GA and my entire childhood was filled with long drives and road trips around various parts of this country. Now, as an adult, my wife and I moved across this beautiful country to settle in Seattle, WA with our young boy to start a whole new chapter. Your footage reminds me just how important it is to see as much of your homeland as you possibly can before you leave this world. Some of my absolute fondest memories are of seeing new things with my family, and now I’m trying to build as many of those memories for my son as I possibly can. Thanks again! Oh, and really great music choices btw

Videos like this are kinda heartbreaking. It's happy and sad seeing people younger who are old or no longer here. It's an America I barely remember or never have. I wish America as a whole could some how maybe genetically remember and change our path somehow, if you know what I mean. I'm Sad for a time I never really lived but wish me and especially my children could live or experience similarly. I also just miss the past and those that once were here

I know what you mean...our now decaying society, with people walking around with their faces buried in their cell phones, and not interacting with other folks, is very "cold", compared to the scenes we see in these touchingly simple films.
