The Amplitude plugin is "missing" that doubling/wide-spatial effect that the X100 has. Tone wise it's close, but Amplitude sounds thinner and has less reverb effect than the real deal.

To be fair, the plug-in can be dialed in really close, if not better. Slap a few toner plugins on your track, drop in some reverb, and there ya go. You can get a really good sound with the plug-in. Don’t make the mistake of thinking Def Leppard recorded straight through this thing and nothing else. You know those guitars went through preamps, compressors, reverbs, more preamps, etc.

The Original Rockman, which I had, is the Plexi version, a dynamic beast compared to what followed. When you get it restored do NOT get the switches changed since now you can inch slowly between the detents and tap into different and very useable sounds that you can't get otherwise. Try it, you're maybe going to live there.

Cleaning out some old junk in a spare bedroom 2 weeks ago, ran across an original Rockman model 2b...forgot I had it. So last night I hooked it up and played till about 2am...Wow! Forgot the tone that thing puts out, and it still sounds brand new. As far as I know, this one doesn't take batteries, it's just a hardwired transformer, 12vac. Now I have to figure out a way to incorporate it into the rest of my gear 'cause I'm def gonna start using this thing now....Incredible. And to think I got it for nothing as a gift from another guitar player that was giving all his stuff away a few years back. Dude didn't know what he had.

Thanks for the demo of the plugin. For me and my application, the plugin is close enough at a decent price. I used to have these at my job when they first came out, and they were adequate at best. Not really built solid enough for rigorous day to day use (we had 10 hour shifts). Even back then, the sound was novel and ok. But NEVER would I think this would become a collectors item much less sell for 3 to 4x times its worth. I'd rather not pay an average of $600 for an X100 even if it was reserviced and mint condition - and I am a collector of vintage music equipment. For now, the plugin is close enough and decently priced. Thanks again for the demo :)

Another great video, thanks for the effort. For me, and I listened 1st without watching, I much prefer the Rockman. To me the other unit sounded muffled, like there was a towel over the speaker. And on the clean channel comparisons I didn't care for how it picked up and put so much emphasis on the pick as it hit each string. Looks like Tom really was the man way back then. Sure glad I kept my X100 from back in the mid 80s. Now I just have to find it...

Love the comparison. Great video! Both are good but I give a slight edge to the real Rockman. The Real Rockman has more bite and distortion to it, whereas the Amplitube one is slightly cleaner but doesn't have the same bite or percussive vibe when distorted notes are muted. The clean channels on the Amplitube are super close but still not there.

I have a rack with an original Rockman Sustainor 2 (with the Lead Leveler) and a Chorus/Delay. Best chorus ever IMHO. I also still have my original Sustainor I bought from Guitar Center in Hollywood back in 1985. It's funny when they started releasing all of these processors the byline was "Sounds just like a cranked Marshall." Now everything coming claims "Sounds just like a Rockman." As a drummer, i find the Rockman has a more spatial sound, more echo, like playing in a big church hall. Tonality between the tow is almost discernible, but there is a difference between the two, particulalry in the clean sounds. The average music listener will not hear the difference when hearing either in isolation. For a young guitarist $100 is too good a deal to get this great sound. Great video.

I will start off by saying that I am not a guitarist. As an instrumentalist I play keyboards/synths. I come from an analog outboard gear background. But now I produce everything via plugins 100% "in the box". From my ears perspective, the hardware Rockman X100 has a few things that the IK Multimedia plug-in lacks. 1 - It has a noticeably fatter sound. 2 - It has a noticeably higher compression ratio. 3 - the echo effect is more prominent. And lastly, 4 - It has a more presence. This is not to say that the IK Multimedia plug-in is bad. It DOES capture both the distorted and clean tones very well and its ability to engage or disengage the built-in effects is a big plus. As well the tonal shortcomings can be fixed with additionally chained plug-ins. I know I'll be adding the Joe Satriani bundle to my copy of Amplitube 5.

Compression, distortion, reverb, sustain are better on Rockman. The clean sounds are sharper on Rockman and slightly muffled on Amplitube. So, Rockman wins! It's that grunge 70s Rock Sounds that Tom Scholz created from his M.I.T education & engineering imagination he built into His Rockman machine. That Boston Sound. So far others have come close. But not quite! Plug in Rockman for the first time, you will hear & feel the difference from the imitators. I want someone to get it right, but so far they can't. Maybe Tom Scholz can get the Rights back. Or if he didn't sign them away when he sold the company, he should make them again. It's the Analog Sound that gives The Rockman the edge over the Amplitude electronic sound. They would sell like hotcakes. Nice video.

I bought the JS bundle last year because I too went down the ROCKMAN rabbit hole. I was very happy with the AmpliTube BOSTON 100 version, especially since you have to give up a kidney to own an original X100. I even created my own using the ToneBridge app. I watched a lot of KZfaq videos to try to get the correct settings for my virtual equipment within ToneBridge and I think I have a very close version. I have a pre-and post EQ set up. Anyway one day it would be great do you have a whole rack unit. Thanks for making this video. I noticed during your demonstration of the clean 1 & clean 2channels, You had the 5DB option selected on the X100 but the MAX volume position on the B100. I’m just curious, was there a reason for that? Anyway great video. Thanks again!

It’s a great simulation but misses the open sound and has a more percussive tone to the amplitude on clean. I was so impressed with the rockman gear I bought about 25 effects when they were going for £30 each second hand. Even bought an XPR 100 for £70

I have a Rockman XP-100 100 watt head with the most insane stock sounds I used for years. I had started to try and model it into an Axe-FX 2, but just wasn't coming up with the goods.

On all the examples the rockman had more ambiance. Maybe that’s the wrong word, chime? Hiss? Reverb? Something lingering that shimmers between notes. But in amplitude it went away and was cleaner so the quiet tiny spaces between notes were, well, quieter. Both are we useful but that secret sauce that the Rockman has might be this. What do think? Did you hear it this way as well? And could it be added into amplitube?

I think the X100 with distortion has more "body" than the Amplitube version. But anyway, you can fix that with an EQ, I use the amplitube version mixed with another amp gain and it sounds really really good.

Try sticking a Boss HM-2 in front of it. The Rockman irons out all the fuzz and you've got a really high gain amp sound. It's what I used to do back then.

I got the Sustainor and its better than any plugin...Compared them myself, both the THU and Amplitube. Got it for 100 dollars from a friend. And now you pay about 500 dollar for it. Nice

The x100 has a much wider soundstage and is generally better, but the Boston 100 on Clean 2 is closer to the Hysteria (song) tone than the x100. It's almost perfect. I use THU Overloud for all my tones, but I'm definitely going to buy the AmpliTube Satriani plugin.

3:48 I think the "Amplitube Boston 100-DIST" just needs a smidgen of delay and it's there?

Close but definitely not the same. Bottom line, I'm sure glad it's available in Amplitube it's a great flavor in the toolbox. I wish I had kept my original X100 (and Rock Modules for that matter). I'm sure a lot of us have seen gear go out the door for one reason or another that we wish we had back!

The compressor on the original X100 is much more transparent in CLN1&2 modes for sure. The emulated one has more audible pumping and squishing. It's also much less bright than the original. I'm not sure if this could be from a loaded guitar signal (i.e. not having a 1meg load on the guitar - cutting off the highs).

How does the sound of the Sustainor compare to the X100? Is it as muffled on Edge & Distortion?

RJ single handedly reminded an old generation this thing existed, then turned on a whole new generation to it and YUP prices doubled! They seem to be coming down now. I recently got a Rockman original for $275 and a X100 for $430.00

It's pretty close, however, the plug-in lacks a bit of spatial separation. For a fraction of the cost take it, but add a bit of delay to one of the channels hoping that the separation increases.

Probably the plug-in needs a bit of reverb instead...

Well said "the amplitude version sounds a little anemic to me and lacks character". It sounded pretty good, but there was a distinct difference particularly in the overdrive. If they were to bring back the original X100 in all its glory, there would be record sales.
