I know this video is 6 years old, but for information let me add that the vertical plastic gear is available on Ebay, Amazon, and at Singer on-line. I replaced my broken one, and it runs fine. I also got new rubber feet and drive rubber band. These are truly beautiful machines, even if it's just for collecting. I own several other vintage 1960-73 machines, as well as the really older Singers. Thanks for the video. Wayne out West (not a channel, since I'm busy being retired.)

That is my first machine. It was great. New, it cost $88. 1978. I made all my children's clothes with this one. I never thought I would see it again.

I just got into vintage machines a month ago. I'm in love with them being able to be concealed in a cabinet. I've purchased a Necchi Nora, a Brother and a Calanda. I too used PB Blaster to get them moving again. It has been so gratifying to bring them back to life and to know that I can sew just about any material I want now. Thanks for sharing.

Great video! My mom purchased this for me back in the early seventies!!! I can remember going down to the Singer store and making payments on it. I still have it and it still runs!!! Great machine!!!

For your interest these machines were made in Clydebank Scotland there was a factory there for Many years. I have a mode similar without the calms which was also made there.

My husband bought this machine for me in 1967. We were engaged and he wanted me to have my own machine. I recently gave it to my daughter-in-law.

Cool! I learned to sew on this exact machine! (except it was light green). My mom had it as far back as I can remember. She sewed clothes for my three sisters and me as we grew up and I learned to sew from her then in 4-H. I remember discovering the cams and experimenting with them. I am the only one in the family that sews a lot, although everyone does "survival sewing". My mom used that machine until a few years ago the nylon gear broke.

I agree this machine is gorgeous. I love it. I grew up sewing on my mom's robin egg blue Singer just like this including the cabinet and small bench. Fast forward many years and I moved onto using my moms Bernina and more recently a Pfaff I bought myself. Actually I have had the old Singer in my house for the past several years not being used and it was most recently used for my sons fish tank to sit on. I was going finally in a mood to get rid of it and had a change of heart because it is just so cute!!! Thanks for the video. I bought this Singer 348 new in 1967 and still use it. Mine was not in a cabinet but is portable (heavy, need King Kong muscles to carry it, lol) with a handle on the top of the cover. It's been faithful all these years and I only ever had it serviced once.

I love sewing machines as well! I have about 35 in my collection, which includes handcranks, treadles and mechanical machines. They are mostly Singers. I love to work on them and my friends call me first when their machines aren't running correctly. I like working on other people's machines as it gives me a chance to see the innards of a brand or model not in my collection. Nice to know someone else's heart skips a beat when they see a vintage machine, or for me. any machine really. It is amazing what the new ones can do now. Have a great day! HI Jason, AH! A "Cabinet Queen"! I have always admired the Singer Model 338 & 348 sewing machines simply because of their color. The color reminds me of a long-ago friend's 1957 Ford Thunderbird that was of a similar color. After seeing this great video, now I will have to find one...hopefully it will be a Singer Model 348!

Too funny ! I picked up my Cerulean blue Singer 348 for $14.88 @ St Vincent De Paul in 2013 because I thought it was pretty.

I just picked one up. I am a visual learner so this video helped! I haven't sewn since high school so I hope it's like riding a bike!!!

I found a Singer 348 "Style Mate" at a local thrift store and bought it several years before I really started sewing. It was the beautiful blue color that spoke to me. Mine is missing the bobbin plate and only came with one cam. It has a matching blue plastic carrying cover with a matching blue leather(?) handle. I have not been brave enough to plug it in but it looks like it was hardly used. Thanks for posting this video as I am trying to find out as much as possible about it.

I have a 338. Very similar and all metal gears inside. Any questions regarding Singer, contact Andy tube and he will tell you where to find things. A great humble gentleman he is. All the best

We gotta face it men, women have cool stuff, , awesome machines, mixers etc. Yes, I have a Sunbeam mixer collection, (Great machines and much better than new stuff, , ,for pennies on the dollar). I just picked up a Singer 301 for 69 dollars plus shipping, what a dream. Light, fast, and good looking, I need a pos that I can repaint, , ,(this one is too nice), I really want the 201 aluminum, and missed a sale on a 101 with cabinet, and stuff for 40 bucks, I;m still kicking myself.

Found one today at a thrift store. 16$ Canadian in the exact cabinet you have. It needs both belts. Waiting for them to arrive. Just a thought, you mentioned the nylon gear, I think you said, that may no longer be available. I’m sure a 3D printer could make one if someone needed it. Rather than throwing the machine out! Beautiful machine.

My 338 has all metal gears as well as underneath pitman (?) arms instead of belts. There is a belt however on the hand wheel. Lovely one you have there.

A beautiful machine & in such good condition. Looks like it hasn't had a lot of use. I got my 338 in 1966 and have used it to make everything from my wedding dress to curtains, then to children's & grandchildren's clothes & now it gets used for patchwork. It's been a fantastic machine with hardly anything going wrong with it over all these years. The gears I can see in mine look to be all metal but there are probably parts I can't see. Yes they were made in Scotland at Kilbowie, Clydebank the biggest Singer factory in Europe which employed over 16, 000 people. Now there's a Singer permananet exhibition of their great sewing machines in Clydebank. A great tribute to the people who worked there & produced such wonderful sewing machines. One of these days I might get there! Hope your machine gives you as much enjoyment as mine has, it's not just a good looker!

Really enjoyed your video thank you. My sister worked in a sewing factory in Dublin Ireland many years ago called John Swans. Her work colleagues men were great machinests too. I bought one of there's sewing machines in a charity shop approx 10 years ago. Never used it. I took it out tonight ready to donate to a charity shop tonight. When i pressed on the peddle the electrics although still in working order the speed had slowed down. There was like a burning smell like an old hair dyer on its way out. I know nothing about sewing machines or sewing 😕.

I bought this machine at a thrift store a couple of years ago for $35 and spent another $35 to have it serviced. It works and sews beautifully with a little adjustment. I'm making masks right now and have put many hours of sewing on the machine. It's chugging along, but might need some more adjusting. It replaced the plastic machine I received in 1976 which I had almost worn out. I love this machine.

My husband sewed for a living while he got his engineering degree. Once, he re-roofed our house and then came in and sewed our daughter's pants. I have a perfect 338 that is a fabulous machine. My hubby likes it too. The 338 is all metal and a better machine than the 348, in my opinion, although nearly identical.

I have a grey one of those. I think mine is a 328 model. Very similar. I collect sewing machines. I’m a man and just started sewing. I bought mine in a thrift store for 4.50. The power cord and foot peddle cords were cut (shame). I saw it a few times and had to rescue it. Should be able to get gears, singers are famous for that. The Andy tube KZfaq shows changing out the broken gears

I have all the same sewing machines. Not many people sew anymore so there are a lot of these going to the dump and dumped at second hand stores. I just got a singer futura ll 920 for 5 dollars. It is a very good machine.

Hi, Thanks so much for this video. I was given this same machine from a friend who said it belonged to her grandmother and she was just going to throw it, so my gain. I really love this machine. I heard these happen to be old work horses, but now that you mentioned the old type of nylon gear belt I am definitely going to see my friend who is a seamstress and see if she knows anyone that may have it or make it. I am only a beginner, but I am eager to learn so much more myself since I already crochet and knit. This would really help me with some things I'd like to create. I know what you meant by inspecting the old power cord. I remember as a child feeling electric current from old cords and even shocked more than a few times. When I was younger I used to work for a cable systems company where I worked with wires, etc...also made the old car phones and heart monitor wiring. Experience with stripping, crimping, sauder, etc. so lucky I understand some things. I also have a heat gun and rubber tubbing should I need it, but I inspected right away before plug in, thank God I remembered that lol. Yes, the cord is in good shape, thankfully. I need to get some more accessories, and just broke my first needle as am still learning my tension, pressure, materials, etc...I am happy that you made this video as you have educated me a bit more on this machine. I actually found a trashed machine at my Aunt's complex she lives, and of course I took it...it is a Singer Zig Zag 457, and works with the exception of the bobbing I am sure needs a new spring, and so I will call that in for service. Thankful to have that friend who knows a good repair person. I also have a new Brother sewing machine on the way, and am glad so I will not overuse these 2 vintage baby's. Yes, please encourage more men that this is a craft for everyone and not just women. I am really hoping that in the future we will start seeing more tags saying Made in U.S.A. again. Pottstown sewing in Pennsylvania might be able to do repairs for you on older singers. We have one just like this and are gonna take it by to see if it’s even worth fixing. They have the really old vintage sewing machines and make parts. I recently bought a babylock for my wife there.

One of the giveaways of damaged electric sewing machine wiring, is that the machine will only run at full speed, (most common in featherweights). It happened to me, though I'd been told the machine had been rewired, and the wire to the pedal was obviously new. It turned out the wiring inside the machine was old and melted, I was lucky, as I used it at full speed several times, until watching a video that explained this giveaway fault. If this happens, stop using it instantly, and get it rewired. They only do this if already shorting somewhere. Thanks for interesting video, I was given some machine accessories recently, including a foot plate that I've just found on an ID website, and it's for your 348 machine, hence checking out your video. Love the way the cats 'helped' you :). Nice touch about the old gramaphones too.

sewing parts online and singer parts online both sell replacement gears. also you can find a lot of replacements on ebay also all brand new gears and they even have 2 different materials of gears to chose from . both different makeups of plastics and nylon gears. only reason i know this is because i own a couple of touch and sew machines and i was looking just out of curiosity. and it appears they have gear-sets for many singers of that era. I originally bought a touch and sew 648 that has the nylon gears, then the other day was out at a thrift shop and spotted a 600E touch and swe witch has all metal gears in it so i had to get it of course.

I was wondering what the difference is between the 338 and the 348 because they look almost identical. I think it must be that plastic gear because the 338 is all metal gears. The 328 is also all metal gears. The 328, 338 and 348 all do pretty much the same thing via the cams - I have the 328 and 338.

I now live in the Philippines and have the use of this old machine, it has been working but there are lots of parts that I don't have a clue about! Hope you can help if I can find the number as in the model, I plan on making a fitted bed sheet! Some practice is needed I do think! Lol

Hi I have singer 347 and for number 0f years it was working without any problem but last month i lubricated it with too much oil and it was wrong oil now the motor works fine but hand wheels does not locking. belt tension looks ok. please suggest some solution.thanks jay

You are right Singer machines were made in Scotland they had a very large factory there, which has now sadly been demolished. None of the companies make solid machines nowadays they are all plastic.

I think these old machines are cool looking too. Some of the Japanese "branded" machines remind me of old cars with the paint colors, emblems and chrome. I have a mint green Singer 319W and I have to admit that I like it better than the black version.

Love the video. My mom found this in a shed. It has none of its parts nor manual, so i have been trying to figure out how to do this. The top disc is a zigzag. Do I need a straight stitch disc for the straight stitch?

I've got one of these machines and the top thread keeps breaking, would you know how to diagnose an issue like that? I've played with the tension a bit and the foot pressure. I'm reasonably sure it's threaded properly. It's a bit hard to see from the illustrations in the manual.

My 348 is not running well at all. I can’t get the zigzag adjusted so that it doesn’t go too far to the left and right. Do you happen to have a video on this particular issue? I hate to part this machine out because I’m watching videos as to how beautifully they sew when they work like they should. Thanks

i have a Singer 603E, and from what i understand is actually is the last of the Singer series machines with all metal parts, so it's a couple years after this one. the 603 is also all metal gear driven (no belt) which is why it's a beast. i love my 603... and i have to add that, like you, i've yet to use any of the cam disks that come with it, haha.

I had this sewing machine bought in 1968 new at Singer Store, it came with cabinet it looked like new in 2016, I tossed because I was moving and the person helping me moved didn’t want to carry it. So sorry I did it, It came all the way from P.R. I have the access that came with it along with the the invoice when my mom bought it for me, I have a similar one in good condition I still use. I have a small vintage one that cost me $400.00 at the Goodwill store, they’re not cheap in L.A. Ca need to know how to oil it, thanks so much. Thanks so much

I bought one of these from a thrift store many years ago for $8.95 (at least partly, like you, because I thought it was pretty) but it didn't come with any accessories. It has the zig-zag disc and a needle but no bobbin. Can you tell me exactly what bobbin fits in this machine? I don't entirely trust that the online supply sites give me compatible products when I search for Singer 348 parts. Thanks!

Get the number 20 cam. It is a curved mending stitch which is useful AND decorative. Very nice for dudes or gals...

I have this exact machine. I won it in a national sewing contest when I was 16 years old (1968). I still use it but have been having trouble with the bobbin thread getting all tangled up. Any suggestions for a remedy on that? I do know I will NEVER give it up because it means so much to me. I'm sure it will be thrown away or put it a thrift store when I die.

Weird. Mine is a 338. Made in Scotland between 61 & 64. The on/off is a simple toggle. Thing actually is sort of a tank. There is a guy on KZfaq whose channel is “Andy tube” that has a demo of the 338. The different plates are for either straight sewing (small round hole) and a utility plate for either zigzag or the embroidery stuff. I got mine from my mom.

I found you here when trying to find a machine similar to mine. The bobbin gear is frozen or something and I may try to get it fixed but it is 50 yr old and thought probably no parts. I have one of these beauties. She does need a belt change. Everything else is cleaned and oiled. Fingers crossed, not too sure about moving the motor part.
