As wonderful as these machines are, they command a high price on ebay and can go wrong very easily. An amazing piece of kit for it's age. Very complex and compact with excellent sound.

I had purchased one of these at Fedco new for $275 and took it with me to Vienna in 1993. It sat on the shelf as I replaced it with mini disk recorders and DAC. Today I discovered my lost D6C and I'm so glad. It is a great piece of technology and mine carries many fond memories with it.

I was born when Équinoxe came out... and my dad bought it and played it a lot. As a result I fell in love with Electronic music and to his shock and horror I became a big 1991 style Techno fan which ruined his life during that period :P

A lovely in depth use of the wonderful WMD6C. I used to have one but got paranoid about dropping it when out and about so I only use cassettes at home

+lizichell2 Yes indeed. I wouldn't actually go out and about with it either for the same reason. As you rightly said these things have a crazy price tag these days. I still need to look into fixing that left headphone channel, I know what it could be but a liiiittle hesitant about tinkering with it.

Got the WM-F8 and F-18 (boxed!). Your unit seems amazing. One problem with the older Walkmans is faulty capacitors. They get noisy.

Over the period of a few years I had two of these machines but it seems that they have a mechanical problem that causes the tape to drift across the the record/playback head and it causes a fading in and out of high frequencies during the first few minutes of each cassette side. I used it to make recordings at outdoor concerts and similar events, the microphone for it gives an excellent stereo image and is unusually of the mid-side type. With the advent of digital recorders came more storage time and better dynamic range but the WMD-6C was for its time among the nicest sounding tape decks. Ms Mad, get yourself a pair of Quad ESL 57 loudspeakers, they went out of production in the 80's but they are so good that you can still get all the spare parts for them today. And by the way, I think you sound rather pleasant :)

Nice review on that Sony Walkman. I have a Sony Walkman yet i been hearing these models have on going issues with a clicking sound. I seen a video on KZfaq on how to repair it but just a little out of range with tiny details it includes. The model is the Sony Walkman DDII. It is in mint condition that came with the original case also mint and was on the unit when i bought it at a thrift store for $4.00.

It's funny that I just recorded that same Madonna's album to my D6C in Dolby C on a Chrome tape but from FLAC files however not LP using a 24bit DAC, The recording came out near CD quality, I wish we could have accessed this level of quality in the 80's , The commercial cassettes back then sounded horrible.
@AlexMGM

Good job :). I have D6C too. Really using high quality metal tape and vynil as a source - you do not need noise reduction system (Dloby B or C). For type 1 tapes with higher noise level using Dolby will be more reasonable. I think so.

Hola Maddi!!

You did ask for requests, but I wonder if this idea is the kind of thing you are looking for. I'd love to see you loop your minidisc player into your system (maybe with a tape switching box) and record the same single on reel to reel, cassette and minidisc and give us the pros and cons of each. My guess is cassette would come a poor third, but who would win between the other two "contenders" is a moot point maybe.
@MsMadLemon
@MsMadLemon 7 жыл бұрын
Actually, between reel to reel and Minidisc, more than one being better than the other, I wonder if it would just be different between each one, I imagine that open reel may have a more fuller sound, where as Minidisc may have a clearer sound. Cassette and Open reel, I did it to an extent towards the end of my hi-fi setup video, I was actually amazed, cassette didnt do as badly as I thought it would... Good idea by the way, I will consider :o)

YES!... TDK MA-XG cassettes are absolutely AMAZING cassettes!... THE best you could buy of the entire TDK line, and also the absolute best of any tape in the world actually, according to more than one cassette "comparison test" that I read back in the heyday of cassette popularity!... SO, I actually bought a few of them way back then when they were available new for "only" about $10-$15 each, and I actually never used them, because like you said, they were so fancy and relatively expensive, (especially for back then), that you "felt guilty actually recording anything on them", LOL!... And now, here it is 2018, over 30 years after I bought them, and I still have all of them, all brand new in the wrapper except for the one which I tried recording a few songs on just to see how good they are... WOW, DAMN good! The ONLY tape that I could actually max out the level meters on my top of the line 3-head cassette deck while still recording clean, undistorted music on! They are also one of the very few tapes made that were so *quiet* of a formulation that you didn't even need to use any noise reduction with, and yet they still sounded pretty much *exactly* like the source, especially if using a good quality input such as direct from a CD. Absolutely breathtaking for a cassette; better than any other I ever used! (Actually, ALL TDK tapes were very good to excellent quality, both in build quality and sound quality/performance level! I also tried/used and still have some of the SA-X and SA-XG "Chrome" type ones and the AD, AR, AR-X and DS-X "Normal" type ones too, (mostly recorded on), and they are also great performers. They all still play and sound fine even today!... It was just one of the absolute best cassette manufacturers in the world!)... Anyway, now I've still got all of these MA-XG cassettes in both 60 and 90 minute lengths, all but that one still in mint unused, unwrapped condition, and I've noticed now that they are currently selling for about *10 times* as much as they originally costed in the 80's brand new!... I am sitting on a goldmine apparently, but I don't think I will ever sell them because if I do I'd *never* be able to replace them!... Maybe one of these days I will use them for making some master copies of something very special, I just don't know what yet. Great video of that Professional Walkman BTW; I wish I had one of those!... I DO have that same Radio Shack electronic demagnetizer tape that you used there though, and it still works great. I've only had to replace the batteries in it a few times over the decades. A quick note about one thing you very briefly mention towards the end; I look forward to seeing your video about the comparison between Dolby and ANRS noise reduction systems, because from what I experienced in my comparisons of that was that regular Dolby B was extremely similar in sound and performance to regular ANRS, whereas Dolby C was very similar sound and performance to "Super ANRS", because I tried quite a few recordings with different tape brands and types, and with various music styles, on two different 3-head cassette decks, one which had the Dolby B/C noise reduction circuitry, and the other which had the ANRS/Super ANRS noise reduction circuitry, and after all of those lengthy side-by-side comparisons those were my thoughts on that subject, at least back in the day when I did that comparison, so now I'm curious to hear *your* thoughts on the topic after you try your own side by side comparison like that... We might be the only two "techie nerds" in the world who even care about such a thing anymore, but that's OK; do whatever keeps you entertained, right? :)

Can I get your phone # LOL, I wish I have a lady that she is into this stuff, I have the WM-D6C and some other vintage tech and no one to share with. Just a tip, Do not magnetize heads that are designed for metal tapes, you may ruin the playing head. Also you are setting the recording level too high. Analog is forgiving but you risk of clipping the sound without noticing.
@MsMadLemon
@MsMadLemon 8 жыл бұрын
Haha! :o)) Yes i'm aware of the high recording level in this video, It was just a crude example. I'm actually quite picky when it comes to recording on tape or reel to reel, if I hear a hint of distortion I re-record. It's the first i've heard about not demagnetizing heads for metal tapes and quite surprised! Where did you hear this?
