@KidWuzi I have tried it both ways. I used to use an expensive mic pre-amp and compressor which would then feed into the sound card BUT then when I tried the built in mic pre-amp on my DIGI 002 I found the sound to be so much cleaner . So my mic is plugged straight into the soundcard . I also love the fact I can set my compressor after recording. There is nothing worse than pumping and breathing from your compressor and its recorded that way. Just set your levels properly before recording

@KidWuzi Recording vocals is a whole art on its own. Staring with a good singer , then a good signal chain fro mike to soundcard , then the right plugins with the right settings on the channel in the right order . I will be covering these in a later video and in my ebook which is almost finished .

@danakerman You are right about that . First of all KZfaq is not stereo which means you cant hear my mix properly , secondly this is not my final mix yet. 3rdly This is a work in progress ....4th of all , actually this track is going to be on a TV commercial and the words are VERY IMPORTANT to the concept . so there goes Phil's mix out the window :-) LOL

@DavidCamposComposer haha! Yeah, figured this wasn't a final mix. I think also modern tastes want a crisper vocal that is more present, and prefer less mids and high-mids in the mix. Personally, I love that sort of vintagey frequency spectrum, and often prefer originals to the modern re-masters. Thanks again for your videos and info!

Great sound, but it's important that you know that Motown (Hitsville) in Detroit used an EMT PLATE reverb on their recordings. Furthermore, the "Oreo Cookie Section" used heavy LaBella flat-wound strings on their guitars; as did James Jamerson and Bob Babbitt on their basses. I can hear that your guitars and bass you recorded have round-wounds. Sounds like a great song though.

@adrher1 Because this video is so old that logic didnt have flex time yet . besides , sometimes flex time can sound weird .

You showcased a spring reverb but never did a plate reverb.

The EMT PLATE reverb was used at Hitsville/Motown, NOT a spring reverb.

Can you post the song that is playing in the background and the one you are working on? Because I love it so much, and if you have posted it, can you comment the link to it here?

Great video. Love this series. Question regarding the mix: it seems classic Motown/Phil Spector mixes "buried" the vocal a bit more and ran the vocals pretty wet, and backing vocals in particular were very wet and the levels kept fairly low in the mix, and the bass was mixed full, round, and up front. Here, the bass lays back a little, the backing vocals are punchy and way up front, and lead vocal is also punchier. What are your thoughts on mixing for the Motown sound?

Great video David, thanks! Can I ask what the recording chain was for the lead vocals (Lotto Martin)? what mic and what pre-amp? I like the sound.
