Vintage Star Wars Kenner Darth Vader Tie Fighter Custom stickers & lights - Toy Polloi

This Darth Vader Tie Fighter had seen some action. Missing parts, the wrong parts, and really filthy. A perfect opportunity to make a custom ship with extra lights and battle damage stickers to make it look more like it does in Star Wars.
This is a really fun Wabi-sabi project. Taking what some would see as junk and turning it into a unique displayable toy.

Wabi-sabi. “In traditional Japanese aesthetics, wabi-sabi (侘寂) is a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of appreciating beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete" in nature. It is prevalent in many forms of Japanese art.”

Next time try cutting a slot in and using a straight screwdriver to unscrew it. With a small grind wheel and a Dremel it will cut without melting the plastic. I do this all the time with stripped screws in plastic.

Looks fantastic! Just a thought, if you could cut out two small pieces of silver metal tape used in HVAC sealing, and put them on the underside of the cockpit doors, it would give that reflective red glow that was in the movie.

Watching you tear out the motor nearly killed me. They sound awful but the nostalgia they awaken is priceless. That being said, I was inspired by your customizations to painstakingly recreated the motor and lighting rig and built it into my POTF Tie Fighter and absolutely love the results. Hey Dave, long-time subscriber and first-time posting, just a quick tip, when drilling out screws and such, start with a small size bit like the size you use on your hand drill and then work your drill bit size up until you take the head of the fastener off, or you are able to get an easy out in the fastener. Love your content, man, I've learned a lot from your videos thank you!

Really loved this one Dave. Probably the most satisfying “hot soapy water” wash ever? Worth its own short video I reckon! Such a satisfying result from what you started with. I recently fixed an Interceptor with similar wing issues as this (broken clips/clip supports etc) and used very similar styrene pieces, so I was chuffed to see you doing this as well. Interested to now how your clip support bracket handled the pressure of pushing the spring in? Mine definitely required some reinforcement and took about 3 goes to get right. Great video and great result. The red glow looks SO cool!

What often helps me is to soak the body parts with rusty screws in some vinegar. The rust dissolves slightly and you can then unscrew the screws with some pressure.

For that little hole in the back where the old switch was you should put a push button switch that controls the green LED. Dave, a little tip for removing rusted screws like that is to take take a Dremel/Rotory tool and a thin grinding/cutting wheel and cut a slit in the head of the screw so that a flat head screwdriver can fit into it and you can unscrew it from there. 👍👍

Plus one on the dremel . Lots of masking tape to keep the sparks out of the plastic. With that gender I'm sure you have metal flakes in the side of the toy. The reason that second hold down broke was the drill bit was driving the screw into the toy! Try left handed drill bits for screw removal. Alot of the time like 60%they will just back out!!!!

Outstanding stuff! Thank you! If it's any help, one thing I did with my POTF2 TIE craft when they came out was to fill in the open windows on the top hatches, to keep dust out. All you really need is the round part part of a clear 2L soda bottle to cut a couple panels out of, and something adhesive to stick the panels into the hatches with. Ridiculously easy fix, and you'll never have to dust the inside of your TIEs again!

When removing a screw like that, it might be better to a) use a smaller drill bit than you did to drill it out, or b) use a small Dremel cutting disc to cut a _slot_ into the screw, so you can use a larger flat screwdriver to unscrew it.

if you are worried about the plastic just file or saw by hand a grove into the screw head and just screw them our with a flat screwdriver,i suspect also you could use car headlight polish to remove yellowish tint,i have to do it to my car every autumn since it dims and yellows the plastic you hand polish it...but test it on something you dont care about first,it shouldnt hurt the plastics surface

Would have been interesting to see how the motor would have worked if wired in series after the green LED. Presumeably, it would make an annoying buzz every other second, in time with the flash. More or less annoying? Who knows. But I think it's lacking something without the sound.

Well first thing comes to mind that I would say, Darth Vader the empire strikes back - impressive most impressive, you took junk understandable old worn-out played with star wars and made it cool, I have an idea and a question at the same time, would a small pair of vice grips clamped down on the head of the screw then slightly turning the screw work ? Or were the screws to rusty to try that method ? I heard you talking about them being in rough condition but couldn't really see to well. The lights are obviously awesome but I think the damage stickers you made were the best part a very factory original look, the clear cracked window gives it character makes you imagine maybe it would be cracked from the damage that was inflected from the other ship or maybe if he crashed it a possible sceen in the the movie that was never made. You don't like the screeching sound lol keener tried, be cool if it made laser blast sounds like on the movie but that sounds complex and expensive. If you have something to wipe on Darth Vader to get him to have more of a glossy shine those red lights would probably reflect more vibrant, awesome mate I found this inspiring 👍

Loved watching this and looks great. Have to ask, could you have maybe shaved the edge of the battle damaged wings down and had the damage sticker start at the top of the wing? Looks a little strange with the battle damage not affecting the edge of the wing. Not a criticism, I watch your videos as I would be useless trying to do this kind of thing 😂
