Do you wear vintage style to work? Do you wear a different style from your usual at work? I wear the same winged out eyeliner and jewelry on the daily, but I have to wear uniform t-shirts and jeans for my part time production job, and often wear lounge wear for my side hustle work at home of course. What have been your experiences with wearing vintage style to work?
Also, what other vintage topics would you like me to discuss? Let me know :)

I'm a nurse, so wearing vintage at work isn't an option. However, people still think of me as "the vintage girl" because I still wear my red lips and brushed out pin curls. Rock it however you can!

White nurses uniform, cap, stockings and white Florshiems. Didn't think nurses still had caps but the class my friends' son just graduated from nursing school and all the women wore their caps in the class picture. I have a vintage nurses cape from the 40s. Pat Field featured one on Carrie on Sex in the City but it was hemmed short. It's navy wool with a red lining with a Red Cross closure at the neck.

20 years ago I worked at a newspaper. My desk was outside the publisher's office. His secretary was a beautiful woman named Pat who dressed in her "old lady clothes" which was 50s/60s suits. She was beautiful. Hair coiffed, heels, make-up, pearls and other accessories. She stood out, because she looked beautiful and was graceful. She was always my dress goals....... So that was my professional office experience. It fits in and makes you look professional if it is done right. 💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗

When you think about how chic and neat vintage clothes can be (40's and 50's day wear and suits as an example) it's very odd that the average office should object to somebody wearing such clothes , unless they're smelly and look grubby; because someone dressed in corporate vintage style look more put together than in modern clothes. Most people who work in my office are very badly dressed in cheap chain stores clothes. No one wears a dress or a suit anymore. I wear a mix of clothes that I sew myself and some designers stuff to work and I've never had any issues but they've worked out that my own little obsession is clothes.
@TheClosetHistorian

Since vintage does tend to be more put together and formal anyway, you would indeed think that no one could object! I really think skirt suits need to come back into style, I just adore midcentuy suiting and I don't understand why no one wears suits anymore ;)

I'm a teacher who recently started dressing somewhat vintage. I started this year with wearing more vintage-y dresses and collared shirts in high waisted skirts. I keep it "modest" by all standards in the classroom and am now known for rocking a red lip. I get so much more complements than side-eyes.

The nice thing about classic vintage is that it is inherently quite modest, so no one can really complain right?! It's almost odd how nearly every woman used to wear red lipstick everyday and now it is so rare :)

@@TheClosetHistorian It seems most do, I find vintage style is much more stylish and tasteful than a lot of "modern" clothes. Also seeing people in sweatpants, dirty T's and grubby sneakers ( or even slippers ) at the store shows a certain style disintegration. I love your comment about concessions and sacrifices 🌹 : I work at a government agency and I love my job, it's rather business casual so I can't show up to work too fancy or too casual. I like vintage and goth style and only truly wear them out during the weekend, I don't feel sorry at all as I'm glad of what I do at work and know it's worth it to make my style more subtle during the week to seem more credible to the people I work with. It doesn't diminish my personality or commitment towards neither of those styles to adjust how I wear them depending of the time and occasion ; I can't imagine how someone who had actually experienced any workplace could deny that we have to tone it down sometimes and it's alright. Although in the social media world there's a big difference between outfits that get posted (when someone is looking their best), and how they really dress day to day. Oh well !

What a great topic! I work in family resource/preschool. I wear pretty much what I want but keep within dress code. So nothing off the shoulder, nothing too short, nothing with my stomach exposed. But I totally wear skirt and dresses and petticoats and cardigans. Parents sometimes question but I always just say that I wear what I like. My mom told me I couldn't wear a dress Every day and oh look. She was wrong. My biggest tip is to wear what would have been acceptable within your professional at the time of your choosing. That doesn't always work but it's a good place to start.

I found your comments about the potential of being overly sexualised very much at odds with my experience wearing vintage - I found most men suddenly started treating me like a 'lady' rather than getting handsie. Not sure if this is because we live in different continents, our age difference or the different time period we gravitate towards (30's - 40's for me!) It can be worth remembering all those little things we do to make ourselves look more vintage once we've got the basics of a wardrobe - like wearing a hat, gloves etc, making sure everything is very buttoned up & proper, rather than the relaxed way things are worn today. all those little things can make the difference between a great vintage look and modern vintage inspired look. Doing all of them in reverse for work can help make you stand out less.

I'm glad to hear some men are more respectful! In retail I tended to get comments from men that leaned in a very "the 1950's were a much better time" "I wish women still dressed like that" direction often, with a wink like they enjoyed the idea of an apron and petticoat wearing little 50's housewife. It can be done in a nicer way, or it can be said in a very "make sure you have dinner ready and a cocktail waiting when I get home dear" sort of way eeeek

I absolutely LOVED your comments about the "Do you wear vintage full time?" question!!! Yes! Dita has won that competition, so lets just give it up. I used to dress vintage full time and over the last year have been interested in trying out a different look on occasion.. I refer to it as my "aging hippy" garb. Ha! It’s a difficult subject to broach, but it’s a discussion that would really benefit the vintage community. If I can facilitate that discussion or help you in any way, please do let me know. My mom graduated from high school in 1940. She was an average middle class girl. She went right to work as receptionist for an insurance company. After a year of that she moved up to the front desk at a large regional Bell Telephone office. She wore tailored dresses, well cut suits with lovely blouses. To and from work she wore a coat right for the season, hat and gloves, and matching handbag and pumps. She wore her hair up or down. When it was down, her hair was up off her shoulders in soft curls. Her hemlines were just below the knee. I think her workwear still would be appropriate now in a corporate or law office. Gloria

This is a great video! I don't have a lot of issues regarding the way I dress at work, because my workplace is really casual and also I'm just trying to dress like 50s/60s Elvis as often as possible. I get more compliments than anything else, but honestly I look really really gay, so I don't get comments from random men very often. I agree that there can be a stigma around women who dress in a feminine vintage style. Most women seem to do it for themselves because they want to, but I notice men thinking those women are dressing to impress them. Clothing is such a cool way to express ourselves, but it is also so complicated in regards to gender and society and the complex thoughts regarding wtf men are even doing in life. Thank you Sal! The Elvis look is a very good look! The gender/identity presentation aspect of style is something I have started thinking about even more recently. The fact that I dress super feminine (or femme rather, I suppose) means most everyone I encounter assumes I'm very straight I imagine. In fairness, even I assumed I was just a broken straight person for most of my life because I have always loved "girly" fashion-- so naturally that must mean I couldn't be queer right...oh culture, why did you confuse little me? Great topic Bianca, and I love how articulately you addressed it, with thoughtfulness and grace. I used to wear vintage dresses very often in my 20s especially when going out in evenings or during the day when meeting with friends, not that much at uni but more for practical reasons and because I also still love a modern jeans-rugged motorcyclish look as well, (but it may be a tiny bit 50s thinking about it now), together with dressed and suits and updos and pearls...since I started working and other personal issues, and weight gain etc I started "hiding" with my clothing between trying to be professional and just trying to survive and not having much will to dress up....today I am in a very slow long process of gradually getting back to my old true self, with the twist of more maturity....still figuring things out...I work in a helping profession so I could technically wear what I want "creatively" as long as it is not "sexy" too revealing, too tight, etc, which is true also for modern clothes of course...but I struggle a bit in finding what is a right balance. I go vintage with my eyeglasses though and wear pearls almost every day and a chignon! 💜

Lots of tartan and knitted suits, mid calf hem lines, ruffled high necklines with a small bow or pearl button kind of styling. The fashion is understated but very detailed. Thanks for the vid - I really do appreciate all the info you pack in to it. Looking forward to the next one.

Thank you! I love antique-ish clutter, I will have a very curiosity cabinet style house one day :) "Proper" vintage fashion is definitely more ladylike (and gorgeous!!!) than the modern idea of vintage as a very pin-up thing. Luckily people who watch those lovely films like yourself know that well :)

I have to say I’m transitioning into vintage and my coworkers love it are so sweet and supportive and complement me. It’s a very casual office so it’s really more that I stick out because I’m a lot more dress up than everyone else. Maybe it helps that I work in a largely female office and part of our corporate culture is being very inclusive and non judgment.

This was such a fun video! You’re so right about trying to find that balance between expressing yourself but also making sacrifices for your workplace dress code. I work from home but have a part-time job in retail and honestly, I can really only dress vintage on weekends and you know, it’s so worth to “save” my vintage looks for when I can devote the time to it and know they will be appreciated and not discouraged.

As far as wearing different styles to work the office culture is going to be the prime decision maker. That being said, sometimes it's not whether you win or lose, it's how many pages you made them add to the employee handbook.

In my working days I wore suits, and absolutely love the look of suits. At one time had many suits, a few dresses and slacks. The only challenge was the cost of the Dry Cleaner bill! That which you have on appeals to me. Reminds me of some of the dresses I once wore. I own a few pieces of vintage brooches.

I have been so surprised how easy adding 40's styles to my work attire has been. I have an science/regulator job where I have to be professional in an office but also have to be ready to go outdoors at a moment's notice. My boss (who is older, nearing retirement) told me she really likes the was I wear my hair (brushed out curls). I think the military-inspired cuts of the era really work well for the odd dichotomy of my job. I feel like I' not wearing a costume while gaining a sense of personal style. Also in a job like this, where I have to collaborate with all sorts of people around the state and the country, it actually helps to stand out just a bit, in the right way, so people remember me.

Enjoyed your tips on Vintage Style at work. Great outfit you're wearing. Very put together. Love the touch of green at the neckline. Wearing Vintage Style in a corporate setting is very tricky. You don't want to attract unnecessary attention to yourself. The idea of a "touch of vintage" - brooch, earrings - is perfect and is understated. It then becomes your signature and helps you to stand out without being obnoxious about it.

I’m disabled and can’t work. I spend a lot of my time in bed, and therefore, I wear a lot of nighties. Now, I am hoping to go the Jessica Kellgren Fozard route and get me some vintage style nightwear, so I feel pretty even when I’m stuck in bed, unable to move. But, actual vintage nighties are both extremely expensive and just not available in my size. So my plan is to slowly find vintage style nightie patterns (or make my own) and slowly sew up my own nightie wardrobe, bit by bit. I know it’s not something most would bother with, but I think for me, it would be nice to have that ability to wear even a bit of vintage even on the days that I can’t leave my bed. I’m thinking it would be good for my mental health. So that’s my plan. Also, I rarely leave the house, and I don’t really have the energy to doll myself up just to sit in my wheelchair for an hour or so. When I do leave the house, I do try to make an effort (not always possible). Or, when I’m taking a picture for taking the bin out, now that a lot of people are experiencing my normal “never leave the house” lifestyle. (Seriously, the Bin outing Facebook page is hilarious and I highly recommend it).

Simple 40s hair that isnt too big is generally considered neat and professional, if a little eccentric. Really big pinup style victory rolls again give that "alt" or "sexy" vibe, which some people find un professional. But i often wear my fringe and the front of my hair in small rolls or poodle curls and the back curls in a snood and always get compliments . (I work at a casual state government office, clean jeans are considered usual for every day.)

Our bank had "denim fridays" and I owned not a single pair of jeans so I would just wear my navy skirt and they were fine with that. I stopped doing vintage for a while after my divirce and now im building up again. Im a receptionist so im going with secretary looks lol

I work in a bank office setting and am usually just happy to sneak in a vintage piece or detail in my outfit. Like today I’m wearing a 1970s powder blue houndstooth jacket with my white skinny pants and yellow blouse. I’m not awake enough to do my hair in the morning but occasionally I curl it at night and go with it styled. Rare occasions since my evenings are usually spent getting my son ready for the next day instead of myself. It would be great to have the time to dress out all the time but I’m not waking up at 5 for it.

Tailoring allows for some formal vintage silhouettes, especially menswear. I have some pieces that belonged to my grandfather that are still so elegant. In my job 6+ years, I work at a dot com, not customer facing at all. But I did start out from the date of hire dressing in vintage (though more "retro"/pinup than genuine vintage), and I did get comments on it. Most were approving of my dedication; a few mentioned I would get tired of putting in so much effort, and I kind of scoffed, and it probably strengthened my resolve as well. But I eventually did go on a minimalist/capsule wardrobe kick and decided to reserve my "fun clothes" for weekends. Now I have a 5 mo baby and zero energy for hair and makeup, so my ensembles can make me look more um... frumpy than anything else. 😅 I need to sew up some new pieces so I'll be more motivated to glam it up, even low-key.

I wish I'd heard your advice of "it's okay to change your style of someone at work is being creepy at you". I used to work in research, and we moved from a university site to a corporate site, so I tried to dress more corporate instead of looking like a student and just... One guy made a habit of asking me EVERY DAY why I chose to wear something. And a woman in my group was generally very patronising about my efforts. And it was just horrible, and after two months I just went back to jeans and a t-shirt and felt like I couldn't cut it in corporate style. (Also, thanks for your disclaimer at the start! I've read so many "what to wear to a corporate interview" articles that were written by people in very artsy, stylish offices (and were probably written for those jobs, but were rebranded by the site editor). So it was nice that you were upfront about what kind of workplaces you had personal experience with, and what kind of workplaces you were giving style advice for.

I work in a huge insurance office and we have a “dress for your day” policy. My boss wears a sweatshirt and jeans when she has no client meetings. As a vintage/repro wearing gal, I can honestly say I dress way more professional and neatly than 90% of my coworkers, because a cute dress and cardigan always beats sweatpants. So no one really cares because I look neat and professional. As long as it’s not too sexy or revealing obviously. And yes I get people saying I’m “pinup” or “rockabilly” because I guess that’s the association they make with that style of dress.

I wear a light vintage style to work. Tends to be a bit more 40's with high waisted skirts and pants, blouses, vests etc. It works really well. I also do formal friday's where I do something a little more dressy. Once I even did a huge piano circle skirt with floofy petticoat and heels. It was a lot of fun. But my colleagues expect me to do something with a bit more flair on a Friday. Winged eyeliner is a go-to for almost everyday. I don't often wear red lippy as it's hard to maintain when I talk so much (I'm in sales and do site meetings on building sites). I've found that 40s style menswear is great for site meetings and inspections. Practical AND stylish! This is a fantastic topic and I'm glad we're talking about it!! :)

I am a teacher. I teach History to boys and girls aged between 12 and 17 and I wear vintage style (reproductions) to work not very long ago, more or less from september (the beginning of the course), not everyday, because sometimes I like to wear denim, for instance. But my experience is being very pleasant: the other teachers are always keeping an eye on what kind of outfit I wear that day... and the children... Oh, the children! The biggest ones use to talk about how beautiful I am (I know it because some of them told me...), AND I AM A 44 YEARS OLD OVERWEIGHTED LADY. The girls use to ask me about the era of my outfit, and the little ones (6-7 years old, who I obviously don't have in my class, but who see me everyday at the playground) call me "the Princess", and they wait for me at the stairs to give me a hug and a kiss and see my dresses (my vintage style coat has them specially fascinated). There is a dressing code at the school (not too short skirts or trousers, not showing the underwear...) but I don't find complicated to follow it with my style. (Excuse me for my English... I'm from Spain and It isn't good enough... But I'm improving watching videos as yours...)

So many of the tips you addressed work for all manner of clothing self-expression--not just vintage. I have been an adjunct professor for 14 years, and for the first 5-7 years of my career, I wore pencil skirts, blouses, heels, and full make-up/hair and attracted generally negative attention from my mostly-female colleagues as the dress code (English department) seems to be somewhere been "hippie casual" and "just rolled out of bed." I dressed better than most people who worked in administration, and that was looked down upon. Unfortunately, many of those same colleagues still ostracize me because of some perceived-attitude due to my clothing . . . but it has gotten better with my wardrobe change . . . Between life getting busy and having little ones, I still wear a tunic/blouse, skinny dark-wash jeans, blazer, heels, and full make-up/hair to work. It's my "coming down" from looking so dressy. I am still the best-dressed person in my department, but I guess it's my compromise and, frankly, it's just easier in the October-March icky Chicago weather. :-) I do pull out my nod-to-vintage attire August/September and April/May . . . or whenever it finally gets a bit warmer.

I work in a business casual office. I'm a trainer (among other things) and I wear mostly vintage inspired clothes to work. I'm plus size, rarely wear pants, wore red lipstick every day for over a year, often set my hair, and pretty much always wear bows in my hair and it is absolutely fine. I get tons of compliments on my clothes, hair, and accessories. I have people who want to see my outfit every day. I did have a higher up co worker who was kinda creepy. Wearing high waisted skirts is flattering for my body and it does accentuate my larger bust. He made some comments that seemed complimentary but gave me the heeby jeebies. I stayed away from him but was relieved when he was fired. Everyone else has been very positive. I work with new hires and I think my vintage style (and fabulous personality!) breaks the ice and puts them at ease.

Sounds like you're having fun! But also, I'm glad the creeper is gone! I always think even in the worst case people sniggering or even laughing at my style when I'm out and about that I have brought "something" to their day, something different, even if they thought it strange. People like novel things, and vintage can be quite novel for people, so it's good to bring a little more fun into people's lives!

My vintage work style is very English country housewife goes shopping - wool skirts, long sleeve blouses, jacket or cardie and sensible shoes. I have long hair that I always wear up. No one has ever accused me of being sexy, thank goodness

I work at a Boys and Girls Club. I have to wear a shirt with our logo. I will usually wear a vintage or vintage style skirt or pants with shoes (it depends on what we have planned with the kiddos that day).

The prospect of wrangling kiddos of any age, in any outfit, terrifies me, so super props to you!

I'm struggling in the "just showing up as vintage" zone. And also I'm lazy. The struggle is real.

Really enjoyed watching this video. You touched on plenty of very different topics in a mature way and it was good of you to bring them up. I like vintage style but I don’t personally wear it myself. In the office I like to wear pants and a lot of my business pants are those lowish waisted ones. I hope that I can try make some high waisted vintage inspired pants to add to my work wardrobe and incorporate vintage that way.

Thank you Alicia! It can be so hard to find truly high waisted trousers these days. I often find high waisted "businessy" trousers at the thrift shop though, so it may be worth a look there. Even if you just have to alter the leg shape or hem, that's a pretty easy fix compared to sewing the top/fly of trousers which is fiddly in my opinion!

In retail i mostly wore uniforms; one only had a blouse so i could do a lot more. For my new job i still have to figure out how I’m going to work around the full uniform. Blouse, pants and shoes! Luckily there not stern at all, as long as I’m safe and continue to do my job well

A full uniform is harsh, but at least they are casual about the other details!

I started dressing vintage a couple years ago while at my current job. Being the receptionist lots of people saw me and lots of people stopped to question it. It was a little weird. I dress "normal" while at work now but wish it was an easier transition.

It's hard to balance wanting to wear the things that make you happy, but also not wanting to be questioned about it all the time. Even nice comments can get tiring if it is just all the time! Sometimes you just want to chill under the radar it's true :)

@@TheClosetHistorian I like what you said about starting a new job from day one (the interview) dressing vintage. I will keep in mind if I look for a job in the future

Loved the post. I work at a university (in the legal firm) and am starting to wear more vintage clothing (I wore pretty classic items beforehand so won't be a huge stretch). My motto now is "What would Joan wear?" - Joan from Mad Men, as not only do i really love her late 50s style, we actually have identical measurements, although she's a bit taller than me. It really helps me get a visual idea of what works on my body.

Thank you! That is so useful to have such a well suited style muse. I loved the colors they put her in too, but I just love color in general I suppose :)

@@TheClosetHistorian me too! I'm not super into colour myself (I wear lots of black), but it does inspire me. Your blog is amazing. I'm pushing myself to learn to sew and your dresses are a huge inspiration.

I have to wear a uniform to work...which I am proud to wear as it is a symbol that is recognizable across the country...no not military.... This year I'm going to see if my job location is comfortable with me wearing the pencil skirt that is actually one of the uniform options if job appropriate. A couple victory rolls and a red lip and wah-la I'll have made my uniform vintage-y!!😄

Aw that is so awesome that you get to wear something that both symbolically resonates with you and you can be proud of, and that can also possibly lean quite vintage in style too!
