In my experance learning about hay making machinery operation is back to frount. you will never really know how to drive a mower until you have operated the rake or tedder. Then you need to operate a baler to really know how to rake and row hay, so you can judge size and placement best for the baler you are going to use. The ease of the next prosses depends on how the last operation was done. You guys are doing a fine job of it. dispite the age of the machinery Dad has kept it well maintained and you have been able to get on without breakdowns or holdups.

Hi Jo Oh how lovely to see you both on your dads favourite toys. Nick certainly seem to have mastered those tractors doesn’t he. I think he is secretly enjoying himself. Considering you were both (thrown in at the deep end) with the running of Dale Farm I think you have both done great and learnt very quickly. Cracking video Jo like the 2 tractors tedding the reason you go round anti clockwise around the field first time is so that the hay doesn't go onto the un cut grass if that helps.doing a good job.

That made me think and run though my mind on which way we mow hay . And you are right that is the way we do it. No one ever said anything but watching Dad mow what is the way I learn to do it

Hello there. You will get a good crop where there is clover. Clover has its own Nitrogen and you know what that's good for. It looks a beautiful place where you are. Iv done quite a bit of hay making in my time. I was used to all those tractors and machinery that you call vintage. I worked the land all my life. I loved it.

You ted anticlockwise with a hay bob to prevent the PTO shaft colliding with your right lift arm on tight turns. By turning to the left the PTO moves to the center line. Fantastic job there!! WOW!! I love the smell of fresh hay!

Hi Joanna. They look way more stylish than a lot of the modern tractors. Plus, you can fix them without paying huge amounts to do so, unlike john deere and it's computers that lock you out!!! More wonderful adventures from the farm. Many smiles from down south.

I think I spent the first 6yrs going clockwise with the haybob… I still do it now 🤣🤣 and spent a couple of years running it in the transport position as well🤣🤣🤦‍♂️. Your doing well👍 It takes time to learn the tricks and tips especially with the haybob and baler but your getting there 🙂

Hi Jo, there's nothing wrong with older tractors and equipment! at least you stand a chance at fixing them on the field, a few years ago I was in the passenger seat on a big John Deere running a three-mower unit that one of the local contractors has and Charles told me the computer couldn't find 6th gear again, so it would have to go back to the dealers to get re calibrated .... again, but he had silage to cut so had to manage the best he could, so all this 'drive by wire' might be great but you can't sort it out with a hammer...... even if you feel you want too! Since I retired from my farm near Whitby I moved to the USA to live, if you think your equipment's old you want to see what it like here in parts of Wisconsin! I watched your programs on Discovery+, very good and interesting.

What you are doing is marvellous, it’s not easy to take over and run farm, but from what I can see you really are doing great work. The hay lines were as good as any I’ve see in Wiltshire. Be proud.

Another fab video Joanna. Sounds as if your little 135 has a fuel delivery problem. Definitely worth cleaning out the fuel system and changing the filters. The 135s are so incredibly reliable it would unheard of them failing on major issues, so probably something really simple.

Thanks for taking us with you hay making. I enjoyed seeing the old tractors still earning their living. It was interesting looking back from your tractor and seeing the hay had only dried on top and the tedder was turning up green grass. You were talking about how you are learning as you go: I was just wondering if making notes for next year would be helpful? It’s so easy to think that you have got something but then lose it over the year. Don’t forget to check up what maintenance your equipment needs, but I guess that you are on top of that. I love the views from your farm too! Looking forward to seeing the baling😀

New to your channel. I was brought up on old machines such as yours on my uncles farm so I love the older way of farming as opposed to the modern day massive stuff. Saw the video when you lost your lovely dad and completely feel for your loss. I have lost both parents and it’s just the pits. He’d be proud of you keep on keeping on and I’m loving the channel👍

It’s similar to our haybob, the pto goes to the right hand side so turning right compresses and stress the pto shaft hence the anti clockwise direction, you can go clockwise but must always lift the haybob to turn right. If you get the head vertical by adjusting the top link (though you seem to have yours on backwards it’s better to have the lock tab tractor side as it can get fouled on the equipment in use) you will be able to start with it on the ground, engage pto to it with no extra revs then slowly increase to 540 as you set off. But as ever you’re doing a cracking effort for first time

Nick is correct about travelling in an anti-clockwise with the haybob . If you go clockwise and turn too sharp at the corners then the tyres will be ripped off the rims of the machine.

Great job for 1st time.Yr top link is too short if the tines are throwing up dirt/soil while just spinning on the ground.The tines have two hole positions, 1 is for turning the hay & the other is for rowing up the hay.The top link bracket on the machine also has two holes to choose from, 1 is for turning & the other is for rowing position.When you have toplink & tines in the right hole yr haybob will be properly set up and ready for use.You also know how to close in & out the gates at the end for each job yr doing at that time.You are blessed with the good weather for yr 1st year making hay on yr own.🙏🙏🙏♥️♥️ ps.I also forgot to say that the wheel depth can be altered up or down on the haybobThink it' has 3 holes to choose from if I remember right.The hole it was at previously by yr dad should be perfect enough but you have that option if yr not happy with what it's doing in the field.!!🙏

Looks to me like you are doing better than just muddling through - one of my favourite jobs when I did haymaking in my old (of my youth) job driving an old Ford 3000 with the tedder - and you have that view too!

Good to see your lovely tractors getting a good work out. Nick may not know but on the 885 you can change between 2nd and third gears on the move as those David Brown’s were build with synchromesh. Useful when you have a hilly field.

Johanna and Nick, I commend you both for taking out the Haybobs and having a go. I wish that I could be with ye to set the machines. Yes, you have to travel anti clockwise. The revolving tines protrude to the left of the tractor when moving forward and the machine hinges at a point just to the rear of the three point linkage unit much more to the left than to the right. Next the top link needs to be lengthened or shortened to a point where the tines rotate almost parallel with the field, but just slightly dipped to the fore. They should lightly “brush” off the field and not tear the sod. Adjustment of the top link should take place while the tines are rotating at an engine speed of about 1300 revs, while stationary. I noted that Nick is travelling at too fast a speed ‘round the field. The higher the engine revs, the greater is the force of the tines downwards because of centrifugal force. I use a little MG35X and travel in 2nd gear at about 1400 revs. Your MF135 is geared identical to the 35. It takes a little longer, time wise, but does a better hay tossing job. When rowing to bale the hay, simply shift each time to the rowing angle. They are then angled slightly backwards. Close the two gates to about 18 inches for the hay to pass through. They will make really neat high rows of hay for baling with the square baler. The round baling contractor will row the hay with his own much larger machine. Off with you now and happy hay making.

Hello how are you? It does not matter what direction your tedding hay or raking as to how it was cut so you know. That will not break your tedder. Do you have a moisture meter to check the hay it helps. Hay should be around 12% but I have baled as high as 20% with not issues. Hay with the flowers goes along with the pretty woman. You both have a great day great work.

Hi Jo Nick, Your doing a great job at the harvesting the hay, the only thing I can see your doing is your a bit fast at turning the hay, just an observation, is the angle right on the spinners ? Can you alter the angle?it's a long time since I used that type of turner, l can't remember, still great job and it's nice to see you happy, dad will be pleased take care Emlyn

The 135 shouldn't stutter and cut out under any circumstances or work load, unless there is an issue, which will be minor in nature from what you describe. I suspect that there is either an intermittent fuel blockage / restriction issue, that could be debris floating around in the diesel tank, partially chocked fuel filters, air entering the fuel system via seals or unions etc, or a semi blocked fuel cap breather creating a vacuum effect. When you can, I recommend draining the diesel tank and flushing it out with fresh diesel to remove any contamination, bits of hay, sludge etc. Do this by removing the tank exit pipe and union. Also replace the fuel filters in the system together with their rubber seals that should come with the new filters. It would be worth cleaning the diesel lift pump out too, as they often contain a gauze filter that blocks up. The fuel system then needs bleeding of air before the tractor will start up and run. There are KZfaq tutorial's to explain this procedure etc. Fuel system issues never totally resolve themselves; only recurring at the most annoying times ...🚜😁🚜

hay is coming along well in the fine weather .........having 2 haybobs speeds up the work .....the only way you will learn how to operate any machine is by having a go ......the stopper for the engine on the 135 might be vibrating its way out causing the issues you mentioned ........we had a 165 that used to do just that .......

Make hay while the sun shines. David Brown's are good hay making tractor's, Massey Ferguson's are quite good too.
