I met Geoff Capes at Dinard airport here in France in 2012, I confessed to him that at junior school I told everyone he was my dad so I didn't get bullied. He laughed and shook my hand which almost wrapped twice around mine, I still have no idea how he got on that tiny aircraft? Nice bloke, and a true giant! 🏆💪🇬🇧

Kwik fit adverts are great as they are the complete opposite of what they say in their adverts, our local independant tyre place is no more expensive and actually know what they are doing. I know when we were there last someone else had brought their car in for tyres and one that Kwik Fit had fitted was the wrong compound for that make, and one of the mechanics did not have any good words to say about them!

They're a franchise so some are maybe better than others. Having said that, I've never heard a good word about the local ones. Replacing parts which don't need it seems to be the main complaint.
@FishpondsLady

I've actually never had a problem with Kwik fit, but to be honest only with minor jobs like replacement tyres. My John was an excellent mechanic and solved most of my problems with his knowledge, KZfaq, and some replacement parts from Halford (other car parts shops are available). Gosh, I do miss him. X

I remember the strong man in the first ad - he was on TV a lot at the time. His name was Geoff Capes. Great to see Richard Briers. Love the Metro 'Batman' ad - I remember seeing that at the time.

excellent series of vids Steve! i knew an old woman who had virtually all her wall space in 2 rooms filled with shelf after shelf of old VHS tapes going back to the late 70s.. i often wondered about them, not about the programmes they contained, but all those classic old gem adverts that she must have.. will be an absolute goldmine of retro.

I think you are wonderful taking the time to put these ads online. Thank you from a very tired girl, and an ill cat, in Bristol. (By the way I remember Bristol Street Motors in Birmingham. They had a car on the top of the roof, and as a child I always wondered how it got there). X

Probably down to very poor or no maintenance. If there was one thing A series engines were known for it was easy starting, even in the depths of winter. We pulled one out of a river once after an accident, let the water run out of it and it still started after a few turns.

@jamesbussey2911
@jamesbussey2911 2 жыл бұрын
@@RetroSteveUK That's our fault, tho'. In the 1970s and '80s becoming a two car family was seen as an aspiration. Now it's a basic necessity, 'coz we all have to drive everywhere for anything at all: sometimes justified in the circumstances. However, cars are now suffering a 100% obesity rate, so many roads and streets are now single track, rather than double carriageway. My town is on a historic car rally route, so we have convoys of MGBs or Moggy Minors driving through now and again, and the exhaust fumes are pretty bad. We grew up in that...as I tell the air cadets I teach at our local ATC Squadron. When I teach them about the RAF in the Cold War I tell them we used to have pop songs about Nuclear War, but that's another retro topic...pop songs. about political and social matters. 🙄
@RetroSteveUK
@RetroSteveUK 2 жыл бұрын
@@jamesbussey2911 Yeah, Prince's 1999 springs to mind. Most people don't realise that's a song about nuclear war. On the car thing .. I had a feeling things were getting bad in the early 90s, when one of our neighbours became a six vehicle family. Mum, dad, two boys and a girl. Each had their own car and one of the boys had a van as well. The little car park in our cul-de-sac that was designed to allow one vehicle per home suddenly became a lot more crowded. Unfortunately parking wasn't designated.

@@RetroSteveUK My parents in-law must be the only people I know who actually use their garage to put their car in. Their double garage is by their 1980s built bungalow, but it's only half full of workshop benches, tools and other junk. They own a Dacia Duster goobermobile, a car designed to confirm the fact that these days, one's choice of car says nothing about one's aspirations or personality.

It's a pity most of these cars will by now have rusted away to nothing (certainly in the UK). I actually wouldn't mind a Mk1 Clio 16v or a Punto GT as a little run about. They still look nice now IMO and with over 130hp in both, still very lively too. Probably no so safe as the modern equivalents though!
