I had one in the 90s. For months it would drive "normal" in D until one day at a light I stepped onto the gaspedal hard, doing a kick-down. Suddenly there was a super-short gear for just a moment before the normal gear which completely surprised me. There seems to be a very short gear for when the car is loaded to the brim going uphill. So the every day drive would actually start in second gear and shift up.
@philen
@philen 3 жыл бұрын
@@PrimoStracciatella they always drive on the first gear but shifts to 2nd as soon as it gets moving and is never noticed. If the kickdown is actuated or Last is used it revs it out longer. (Last meaning load, as if the car is heavily loaded or hauling something)

When I grew up in the 60's every family had a station wagon. The ultimate test of a station wagon was "Can you put a sheet of 4ft x 8ft plywood flat in the back and close the tailgate?" Bonus for 3 or more sheets of 3/4 inch. My first car was a 69 Buick Skylark station wagon. We called it "The Golden Whale". Two sons learned to drive in it. I sold it with 210,000 miles on the original engine. These pre-71 oil crisis American cars were built like tanks with heavy gauge steel, body and bumpers.

To attest to the heavy gauge steel pre ‘71. I had a 1968 Ford Country Squire. I let one of my best friends drive it for a couple of weeks while his car was being repaired. Even after replacing all of the front end parts, it didn’t have the same feel as a modern rack and pinion car, and when the right front tire dipped off the shoulder of a local road, he overcorrected into an oak tree that didn’t budge. Car was totaled. He was alright. Two little kids in the back were alright. Right front fender was not. I was distraught. I could t believe how much d,age was done. To see how strong the steel was, I took my 28 ounce Estwing framing hammer and made an extremely strong overhand swing on to the top of the fender. It barely left a divot, but did leave the waffle pattern in the steel. Strong stuff indeed. I think my friend and the kids played down how much that collision hurt them. It hurts me to this day twenty years later. I loved that car.

...this was never a 'regular, cheap' car, lol ...I'm the second owner of a 1985 300D saloon and I have the original invoice for $38,000! ...having said that it's been great value and I (rather my wife) treat it like a regular, cheap car! I can get x12 50lb sacks of horse feed in it, similarly bedding shavings, I can get x3 large bales of hay in the back ...yep it definitely wants to be a truck! Conversely, I maintain it myself and that's cheaper than getting a Mercedes mechanic to do it (even if he understands what he's looking at) - I should have got a shooting brake (wagon) but they attract a premium.

I bought a '93 camry wagon today with the 4cycl 2.2l 5sfe engine (the gas engine of diesels (they get tired at 500k miles). Not too pretty but there are scenes in Japan that seriously dressed these up. Upgrades I'd make are air struts and lighter wheels for mpg gains. punchy little 4 cycle that drives around the sierra's totally fine without the ECT (overdrive mode). bought it haul the dogs to what i need it to, snow included in the mix. highly underrated and i expect this to outlive me. i have power windows so it didn't come with a manual... i too, plan on a manual swap with a dual centerforce clutch. There's a traditional idea that if you want power windows in a toyota, it was always auto but when you're revving down a track the idea of auto windows when short shifting is just the proper mix of speed and and proper, air cooling.

I have a 1981 Mercedes 240d W123. Great cars! I would like to get a wagon. They are well built and they are still seen on the road.

Station wagons make excellent gasser candidates. The weight distribution makes them so good on launch, so quite a few factory drag racing teams used them in the super stock classes. I could see that Mercedes Benz station would be really horrorshow with a straight axle up front.

I do buy what I like, and I adore my two 1988 E34 sedans! Best of old simple technology meeting modern handling and amazing sounds and just the right amout of sound isolation and comfort for my taste, and nothing looks better in my mind!

I feel like you are about ten years late with this prediction! Here in Australia wagons have an epic cult following from home built Holden’s and fords to Volvo 240s and v8 Audis .

I never understood SUV's. They're heavier, less efficient, have worse handling. They just started to catch on in the EU as well unfortunately since a few years. The only reason I would have for buying an SUV is if i have a farm or live on top of a mountain :)).

@Todd Saeger I race cars. The SRT is one of the worst handling cars. It puts slower lap times on our track than an Abarth 124 that has one third the power. It's not very fast either, 0-200 is only slightly faster than a front wheel drive 220 hp Clio rs trophy. It does sound good though, I drove one. I guess on your huge roads it makes sense. You can't drive fast there anyway.

@Todd Saeger an equivalent sized minivan or wagon is a better road car for the average amercian people never really will make use of the tow rating on those SUVs for the most part or will never go on a road worse than a gravel lot and this isn't even talking about how compromised Crossovers are

People buy SUVs because they're big and tall and make the driver feel safe. An SUV owner with no partner, who doesn't drive on any dirt roads or transport anything other than groceries is just afraid of death and looking for a big comfy safety car. The Lamborghini or Mustang badge don't change the fact that you're in a giant, goofy looking, tall- riding safety box on wheels for people who hate risks and live in constant fear of accidents but want to look tough.

My 1968 Country Squire was the coolest car I ever had. I had a 1995 E320 Wagon. I currently have a 2006 Dodge Magnum. The Squire was the coolest. Ironically I dreamt up the perfect car years before the Magnum was created. I loved the Mercedes wagon, but wanted it about a foot longer, a hundred more horsepower, and more sleek, yet ride like the Merc, stop like the Merc, and be far more reliable than that lemon year of Merc. Lo and behold, Daimler/Chrysler creates the Magnum. Based on the previous generation E Class front end, S Class back end, stretched to 120 wheelbase, and 340 horsepower Hemi V8. Dreams come true. I love my Magnum. But my Squire was cooler. Girls loved it. One lead singer lady in a badass local band took their album cover photo with her stretched out on the hood. Hippie chicks had to touch it, and had to sit in it. My friend totaled it on accident. Still crying here. The Magnum replaced it. But not quite.
