This Is a particularly special restoration. It is our first viewer submitted project! Follow along as we completely restore this 1940 Zenith 10-S-464 Radio. How did it turn out? Guess you'll have to watch to see!

Beautiful, just beautiful! I have one from my dad. Not as good shape as this started in. Brings back awesome memories. Is there anyone around San Antonio, Texas that can do a restoration of this “magnitude”? Also have the wash machine from my grandma that I see in your shop. I restored it. Turned out well.

I am a retired professional finisher taught by Ray Santiago. So finally I see a finisher use the right sheen for the period and proper clean up and installation for the interior. I am proud to say beautiful workmanship and coming from me you should be you should be very proud.

I am humbled! Very high praise, I had a very good High school wood shop teacher but am mostly self taught. Frankly I thought it turned out more Orange -ish than I would have liked and, I wanted the burl to pop more, but not bad for a dry run. Always trying to learn! Thanks for the view and comment!

@@MrVintageRestoration Translucent orange kills Green and translucent green kills orange (really works). For example sometimes you may show green in certain areas after stripping or you may have too much orange in the stain to kill the orange you can spray translucent green mixed with your thinner over the area it will kill the orange and vise versa. I have had wood after staining would show a green streak in a certain area and in just that area i would spray translucent orange over it. Does not take alot you may not even notice any change untill you add the stain but poof no green like Majic gone.

Oh I did go back and look close your right it had a little extra orangeness to it. If it were me and i thought it was excessive enough I would of sprayed a translucent green over it and then added a coat of smi-gloss or low sheen over it and been done with it. the Orange would of just disappeared. One thing about wood you can always fix it with adjustments.

@@maryrafuse3851 stay tuned! I've got about 8 GE table tops from a very interesting buy, as well as a 10s155 Zenith, a 1935 Stromberg Carlson among others! I always try to keep a little variation in my project videos. It helps to keep my mind entertained and hopefully my viewers to!😀

@@MrVintageRestoration I can hardly wait for the Stromberg Carlson. I should tell you about my pride & joy. It is a 1936/7 Marconi Canada Model 84. Marconi built radios in Montreal and this one is quite handsome although requiring new caps, a few new resistors and a few new tubes. Also I was able to save the radio from a barn but the original knobs for the Marconi were missing so I, for now, have some wooden knobs from another radio. I'd love for you to look it up when you have a chance. All the best to our US cousins from Canada.

It's a Beautiful set and a great player. I think a lot of families had great memories of being gathered around the old radio. It's feeling that T.V. just can't duplicate.

Mr. Vintage Restoration I have a similar model that needs some love to get back up and running... there doesn’t appear to be anybody in the Lewiston/Clarkston Valley (western Idaho/southeastern Washington border) that does anything with old electronics like these... Do you have a website? I’m not ready quite yet but it’s clear that I’ll have to transport this thing for whatever work is needed when I am ready Little metal plate on the back says: R677373 if that helps at all

@@TheMulToyVerse At this time I don't have a website. I typically don't do much customer pay work because I don't have the time. Mr. Vintage is my hobby/ side gig. That model number doesn't ring a bell for me, doesn't sound like a Zenith model number. If you are going to send it out for a electronic restoration I would recommend Stereo Lab In Cleveland. They do great work and have been in the business for many years. My level of restoration is amateur/hobby at best when it comes to radios. The radio in this video belonged to a family member/viewer and was a special project with no guarantee on results haha! I know enough to be dangerous, but am still building my knowledge on the subject. Im sure it wasn't the answer you were looking for but I hope it helps!

I've just bought a 1936 Radio I am new to Radio Restoration but I've always wanted to give it a try, I seen videos of people cleaning old radio chassis with Glass cleaner, is this the best stuff to use?.... Great video, when you're Radio find that station and belted out some Tunes what a feeling that much have been 😁👍

Radio restoration is a awesome hobby and you'll aways be learning something new! Glass cleaner is fine for some parts, personally I prefer to use rubbing alcohol. It cleans very well, evaporates quick and leaves no residue. I've also used LA's Awesome for stuff that is really grubby or nicotine covered. Thanks for watching, and welcome to the old radio club!😁

@@MrVintageRestoration Thank you for getting back to me that's a great help, my Radio is a 1936 Phillips 838HU, I really wanted something American but I got it for a very reasonable price and I have to say I really like the look of it, I'm also confident that I can soon have its wooden cabinet looking nice again, Luckily for me no one else seemed to want it... many thanks from Ian...☺️📻👍

@@iancoward4492 don't worry, if you stick to it long enough you'll find exactly what you want😉. Personally I love Zeniths but there is only so many I need. At this point I only purchase high end, unusual or high tube count radios. There's no shortage of old radios in the world, watch market place and your local old radio club swap meets 😁

I have a similar radio that I electronically restored back in 2013 with Orange Drop capacitors & Sprague Atom electrolytic caps. I use the radio daily for 5 hours or so. The only problem is the tuning eye has a short life and I have to replace it every 2 years so. My radio is polarity sensitive, so if there's a slight "hum", I have to unplug it, give the plug a 3 or 9 o'clock turn and re-plug it. The hum goes away. I run the radio with a variac so to keep the transformer warm rather than hot. Those 6x5 rectifier tubes were known to short out and take the transformer out with it, so I installed a fuse ( believe it's a 3 amp fuse) and it's a good thing I did! I'm not sure they ever solved the short problem because one of my 6X5 tubes shorted about 3 years ago and the fuse blew out before causing any damage. After replacing the 6x5 tubes & fuse I was back in business!

Sounds like you did an amazing job! Most claim the 6x5 rectifier tube issue was solved when the went to the 6x5gt, but my personal zenith I replaced it with a solid state version. Not normally my m.o. with my radios but it seemed safer than burning up a transformer. From what I understand, is some of the Russian eye tubes have a much longer life but you have to build or buy an adapter to replace the 6e5

Thanks Danymite Restoration! Nothing to fear and experience is the best teacher. If your looking to do a radio, find a less expensive console like a Silvertone. Atleast if it goes sideways your not too much money in. My first was a 1946 Silvertone that I paid 40. Bucks for. Thank you for the kind words! This was my first attempt at raw burl veneer! Patients is key with wood working! Lots of research on method and material, and do a sample piece if your worried about results

I've got a free GE 430 AA5 I recapped that works until it gets really hot and then the sound fades out that I need restored. I also just found a free GE 202 six tube radio I'd like restored. Tubes and dial light lights up but I haven't done anything to it yet. Got a bad ass TS100 and can solder like a boss but not while blind. I guess I browse the Radio Attic forums or something to find someone interested? Radio is dead and I just look up music with KZfaq or ask Alexa. I'm just curious to see how many more stations... I'd pick up with.. one more tube. That grandfathered flamethrower out of Nashville is the only station that plays any music.

Always loved old radios! Something wonderful about the feeling of listening to old radio programs that modern TV can't compete with. Actually the electronic parts are typically rather inexpensive. Resistors and capacitors are pretty cheap. Average is 25 to 60 dollars. Worth of parts. Things like tubes can be expensive though. Green tuning Eye tubes can be 60 to 100 bucks. Average common tubes run from a couple bucks to 30. Of all my hobbies, antique radios are probably the least expensive 😂

Really enjoyed the restoration video. I have a 1940 Zenith 10-S-470 that I have recapped and added mp-3 input as well. However, I must have tapped in at the output of the volume control, because the volume control doesn't adjust the volume when switched to mp-3. It works as if the volume is set at maximum and I can only adjust volume through the phone. Although it sounds good, I would rather do it correctly. If you have other videos of this restoration coming up, could you show on the schematic where you added the switch for radio/mp-3? Thanks!

What is your source for decals? Did you replace rubber coated wires? Did you replace caps one by one using existing wires. Where. Are. You located? Do you accept chassis' for repair? Great work on a cool piece. Finally, how did you integrate Bluetooth into the circuit?

Thanks for the comment Conkyjoe! I just recovered the rubber wires with heatshrink. Decals came from a website called www.radiodaze.com/decals-62/ I inspect caps for values then order based on needs of the chassis. I clip the old wax caps out as close to the cap and connect the new one to the original caps leads. Less resoldering and possibility of cold joints that way. I am located near Grand Rapids Michigan. I accepted viewer submitted projects on a case by case basis. My criteria is: will it make a good restoration video and am I capable of doing the job. I'll admit Im not an expert with old radio's. Just an enthusiast who knows just enough to be dangerous. There is a youtube channel called D-Lab. Terry does a great overview on how to intergrate the aux input.

Thank you DIY Dan! Its a great performer! You won't regret restoring it. I would guess maybe 40-ish hours with the cabinet refinishing. The cabinet took way more to do than the chassis! Good luck with it!

It varies from radio to radio. Does the cabinet need to be restored as well? Is it a simple recap and test tubes or does it have other issues. Simply put, some take more than others. I had probably 25-30 hrs into this set with the cabinet refinishing. A simple recap takes 3-6 hrs depending on the complexity of the set
