In this segment I continue the restoration, repair, and testing of my Rotel RX-1203 stereo receiver. I update the phono ampifier, power supply and power amplifier section of the RX-1203. I also replace the filter capacitors as well as tell you how to find filter capacitor replacements for any vintage audio product. This receiver was produced in 1977 during the time that many consider the golden age for 2 channel audio equipment. Maybe one of the most beautiful silver faced receivers ever made.

Cool in your video you take out a same value capasitor but as if it will fit a higher capable voltage cap. Most replace them with the same voltage type. I allways try to get as high as possible capable voltage range. Course electrolytes are better at higher voltage capabilities. Keep on filming I like your videos.

I just bought an eBay RX-603 Rotel. Not much info online about the vintage Rotel receivers that I have found. Lesser known name, but seems like they're on par with all the popular brands as far as sound quality and reliability. I was hoping you would finalize your deep restoration with a listening test session. Thanks for these videos.

Thanks for watching. Rotel made great audio gear. It just wasn't around as much as Pioneer, Sansui, Marantz etc. I listen to the equipment but I don't try to pretend that my ears are your ears, or that by the time you hear it over the internet it's anything close to what I'm hearing. I will say this receiver sounds every bit as good as my other "name brand" receivers in my collection.

Excellent work so far! I commented on Part 1 of the Rotel about possibly restoring my RA-1412 amp, if you remember. Which I'll add, was working excellent at the time... I was listening to music two days ago and had a quick power outage that lasted a second and when it came back on it blew both fuses in the right channel power supply and the new fuses that I put in blew instantly when I powered it on. I was reading around online online and found that the right channel output transistors may be bad now, (just my luck), so now I need a repair on top of a full recap. I've been reading all kinds of stuff about components and have been learning a lot, but still sort of feel that this kind of job is over my head. I have a soldering station but limited skill with it, and I don't have certain equipment like a dim bulb tester, a fancy de-soldering tool, or the knowledge on how to test for bad parts to find what needs to be replaced. I might just have to take it to a tech to do everything, which will no doubt cost me $500+ for parts and labor, or I could buy all the equipment (which will probably cost even more money) and learn how to do everything myself and run the risk of making mistakes, even if I'm careful. Care to share any insight?
@vintageaudioaddict

Man, I'm sorry about the failure! Those split second power outages can really cause issues. What stinks is that there is nothing that you could have done to prevent it. Who's knows when the power is going to glitch like that. Well.....now how to get your RA-1412 back going again? I'd look for an experienced tech to take a look at her. Google "vintage stereo repair" or "vintage audio repair" and see if anyone is within driving distance from you. This is not something for you to dig into at this point and time. As you said you have limited tools and knowledge. If it's the output transistors she can be repaired, if not someone with experience can tell you the issue. You probably will need to pay for the technicians time but then you can decide if you want to fix her or not. I'm sure that your RA-1412 can be making music again!

@@vintageaudioaddict Yeah I've found what appears to be a qualified vintage tech about 30 minutes away which is promising. I'll have it looked at and go from there. Thanks again for making these videos, I'm looking forward to the next part in this restore, I've learned a lot from your videos

Great video. I own one of these Receivers plus an RX1603...RA1412...RA1312 all in excellent shape having been restored but I feel ill have to get the main filter caps done in the 1412. Interestingly the 1412 is rated at 110 wpc yet is a dual mono design with 4 filter caps in total yet the 1203 is rated at 120 wpc with only 2 of the same filter caps and value!! The power amplifier boards look very similar for the 1603/1203/1412 from what I can see though I’m no tech!!... can’t wait for part 3...

@@vintageaudioaddict Distribution is the reason why this vintage Rotel gear is not as popular in the US as Sansui Marantz Pioneer etc. Rotel went in alone in the US back in the 70’s where as in Europe the Distribution was handled by Rank Arena who had distribution rights all over Europe and understood each countries laws and requirements. My 1603 and RT1024 both came from Germany. There’s quite a bit in Tasmania as I’ve found out due to a successful dealer down there at the time..
