Six months ago, at a local thrift store, I found a 158.16410 for $60. This may not be impressive in itself, but here is the kicker. It came with the case, original owner's manual, and, after checking the original equipment list in the book, I discovered it came with every original accessory. It was ready to sew. It is possible that it was gone over by the local sewing center due to a sticker on the front of the machine. It has been a golden find for me. I believe the price was a steal. It is simply amazing and I have sewn numerous projects on it.

I have several of these Kenmore machines. The 158 models. I don't have this particular model but I have several. I have some with tables and I have some with the convertible free arm and I absolutely love these. The feel the way they run the operation, the ease and I feel like they run rings around singer quality at the same time and even from the '60s they definitely of any machine of the similar abilities. They run rings around the new ones. Today I gave one Kenmore to a friend that was just a straight stitch, zigzag and blind stitch and she absolutely loves it and all she ever had was one of the plastic ones that was made in the '90s. I got it working for her but it has a plastic gear that will eventually go out and when it does it is a catastrophic failure but she has an all steel Kenmore machine that does everything she does or everything she needs. She loves it

One of the best things about Kenmore Sewing machines and Servers was Sears Parts Direct, until about. 11 years ago or so you could order any parts of whole attachment sets for almost any machine 20 or years of so old, I purchased over a couple years 15 years ago two Kenmore Servers made by Janome, the first did not have differential feed but worked perfectly and I found I was able to order a complete attachment set for very little cost, I then found a Kenmore serger of the same series with the differential feed and was able to order the attachments for that one as well, I still use these same sergers today and they work so well. In the attachment sets were everything that was provided when new including the rolled hem needle plate, you have to change the plate on these, easily done, I miss being able to order parts so easily.

I grew up in the 60's. Just want to say a lot of sewist's my family knew rarely used their buttonhole function. Some were a pain to attach and then detach from their machines but mainly, you spent a lot of time making your garment/item. If you did your buttonhole wrong you risked having to throw the whole thing away, VERY STRESSFUL.What to do? You marked the item where you wanted the buttonhole, including the length and you took it to the sewing store and for a very modest price they would do them for you, like 50 cents per buttonhole. Well worth it.

I have a collection of vintage kenmores (Love 'em) including a 158-1942 (essentially the same machine). It is an absolute dream!! I runs SO WELL and is easy to use. You mentioned how the "engineers figured it out". A good deal of theses wonderful designs of the sixties and seventies where the brainchild of Charles Harrison. Mr. Harrison was one of the first black engineers to ever work for Sears. The adorable little 158-1040 (and her cousins - 1030, 1050, 1060) were also the result of his talents. He was a brilliant engineer and became the first black executive at Sears. He was dislexic and wanted to design machines which were highly functional while still easy to use, so someone like himself could learn to use it without necessarily depending on the manual. He also want simple clean lines. I think he achieved his goals. Sadly, he's no longer with us, but he's left a wonderful legacy - one that we can still enjoy today. It moved with us in 1986 and has been stored in my bedroom since that time. Just a couple of years ago I uncovered it, and oiled it and she sews as good as ever. I bought a similar Kenmore (the Kenmore 158.19461) machine in a cabinet at a thrift store. I got it cleaned up, oiled and used it today. A very noticeable difference sewing from my Brother and Emerald 116; it sews smoother, quite and stronger. I'm looking for the zig zag plate insert for it but it sews straight stitches like a dream. I also bought a Morse Fotomatic 4400 in a cabinet from the same thrift store, which I will clean, oil and see how the Morse works.

I've watched your video three times. I absolutely love this machine ! Your video has clarified several questions I had. Over my lifetime I have had three sewing machines. I wasn't very interested in sewing -; perhaps because we were busy raising a family. We also lived overseas, so I donated my sewing machines. We are now retired , and I am getting back at sewing. I recently bought me a Featherweigh Singer 1957. In feel as if I am sewing with a toy. I plan on keeping it, however. Hoping to get used to it. In the meantime I want to purchase a backup one. The Sears Kenmore 158.1941, or others similar - all steel, same series 158, and made in Japan appeals to me. Do you shipping to Florida ? Thank you.

Thank you for the video. I didn't know there were all metal machines in the 70's. That machine sounds really quiet. Not sure if it is that quiet in person or if the sound is dampened in the video. I think the kenmores are often forgotten in the list of collectible vintage sewing machines. Maybe because Kenmore was just a label put on a machine made by someone else. And, there were different companies that made the Kenmores over the years. The 2 Kenmores (48 and an 84) I have are quality, well built machines with strong motors and easy to use controls.

It threads very much like most 15 class machines, and so does the bobbin. Be sure presser foot is in up position when threading machine. Bobbin goes into case with thread looking like the number 6. If pull top of 6 thread unwinds clockwise. Search YT for how to thread a class 15 vintage sewing machine, and for winding class 15 bobbin and threading case, inserting in vertical sewing machine, or front loading machines. Hope this helps some. There are many videos for different model machines, pick one that looks similar to yours.

That model was made towards the end of the all metal machines. While much of that machine is high quality steel like those I overhaul, note the selector knob on top of the machine that is plastic geared. If the machine is in great condition, it could be a strong sewer for you, but use extra caution and I would not offer as much as I would a 100 % all metal model.

Do you know if your machine is a left, center, or right home position machine? Makes a difference if feet will work. Also, if do find the super high shank feet, they are not cheap usually $25 and up each, and hard to find. That's master adapter P60666 for super hi shank machines.

Fortunately, Kenmores were very big sellers back in the day and were a primary competitor to Singer so they were made in large numbers. Try searching Ebay, Etsy, and Bonanza.com You should be able to find what you are seeking and prices for these are not super high. Main thing to note is to be sure it is compatible with YOUR model Kenmore. Kenmores were made for over 100 years so not ever attachment will fit yours.

It looks like the one demonstrated in this video. It came with 4 boxes of accessories. Button hole, Monogrammed attachment, multiple feet, and cams that fit under the lid. Never even played with the monogrammed. They sold on close out the machine ( no cabinet ) for $329.00.I had to put it in lay-a-way because we had no credit card. I do not know how much it cost before close out. It was a great machine.

Can this do a little upholstery?

I typically say not to that idea. Have others tried it before? Yes. I suppose if the upholstery fabric were light enough in weight, it might work. But I've noted many fabrics for that use are quite heavy and often backed with materials such as rubber/vinyl that home sewing machines don't care for. If you decide to try it, be sure to use a Jeans rated needle and go slow. Also, the project should be small and not for regular production work. Personally, if I had your kind of project, I would look into an industrial or light industrial machine.

Shoot. Well I don't have this machine, but I am very glad you clarified that for me. (Was looking to buy one) last question: I know you have a video on the Kenmore C877.50 sewing machine (blue with wavy letters) and maybe that can do more upholstery. I have done lots of research to try and find a Kenmore sewing machine which can do this and is easy to find, but can't find many videos about it. Currently I have the Kenmore 117-959 which I use for some upholstery, but I feel like the rubber wheel which spins up against the wheel slips at slow speeds. Maybe the other model, with the rubber drive belt, gets better friction/control? Do you know if this is true? I would buy an industrial sewing machine but I find they are usually too big for my space and the portable ones are incredibly hard to find. (At least the one I want) Any guidance would be great!

@@VintageSewingMachineGarage I have a Kenmore collection, most of which are waiting for attention - I love the all-metal (and some mostly-metal) Kenmore Line - they're solid, dependable, and highly functional. One of them I have is the 120-49, maybe you know of it. It's an ugly beast, but it has a 1.5 amp Delco motor and a chain drive. It DOES have a bit of nylon or plastic as part of the stitch length control, but mine seems to be in pretty good shape. I cleaned it thoroughly, oiled it (avoiding the plastic) and bought some size 16 needles. Then I tested it with more and more layers of denim. I was still adding layers at #8 an it went through them like they were butter. I'm just knowledgeable enough to not use it constantly for heavy fabric but it will come in handy for some drapes and decor items I'm making. It's quite a machine and something of an oddball as it wasn't made overseas and is VERY different than almost all their other models. I THINK it was made by a division of Chrysler, and Delco is also a Chrysler brand if I'm correct.
