For this project, we used:
MT-1501
Jean jacket
Magnetic hoop
75 by 11 needle
40 weight thread
1 sheet of thick cutaway stabilizer
Glitter transfer paper sheets
Scissors
Let’s discuss profit potential:
We got this jean jacket from the Levi’s clearance section for $20, but you can always buy apparel like this at wholesale for a cheaper price. Then we bought the glitter iron-on transfer paper rolls for $8. We’re going to be using three colors or rolls, so the total comes out to $24. But we’re not going to use all of the rolls, so the cost of what we’ll actually use for this project is $5. That means the cost of making this product is $25. On Etsy, these jackets sell for over $100, and if you sell yours for that price, your minimum profit would be $75.
For the digitizing part of this project, we’re going to be using Chroma. With appliqué embroidery, it’s important to create a trace stitch because it tells you where you need to place the appliqué. To create trace stitches, make sure to have a run stitch going through the middle of the satin stitch. Go to the appliqué design shape, right-click, press Copy, and then paste it. For the second version of the design that is on the bottom, right-click, press Convert To, and press Run. Once you have that, you want the run stitch to be at a stitch length of 2.5mm. Press Apply. Make sure the run or trace stitch is in a different step, so the machine knows that the trace stitch is first and the satin stitch comes after. Repeat these steps for all the shapes that need an appliqué.
Now that the digitizing is done, open up the jacket and have the back of the jacket facing upwards. Place a sheet of cutaway stabilizer and the bottom part of the hoop under the jacket. Then connect the top of the hoop to the bottom part. Once that’s done, you can put the hoop into the machine. Now go to the control panel and insert your USB to transfer the design to the machine. Then, press File, choose your design and press OK. Make sure to pick the F hoop in the Design Set menu. Go over to your color selection menu, select your color sequence, and insert frameouts after each relevant color step so you can put your appliqué down. You can insert frameouts by pressing the F button on each color step. Once that’s done, press OK, lock the machine, set the speed to 1000 stitches per minute, and select where you want the center to be with the arrow buttons. Press the Trace button to trace your design and look at needle #1 to make sure it doesn’t hit the hoop. If there are no centering issues, you can press Start. The machine will do the first trace stitch and then automatically stop and frameout so you can place your appliqué. Then press Start so the machine will start stitching over the appliqué. Once it’s done, rip off the excess, and press Start to continue. Repeat this for all your appliqués.
When the embroidery is done, you want to heat press the design, so it adheres to the jacket. To do this, place the jacket on the bottom plate and then put a Teflon sheet on top of the jacket. Set the heat press for 310 F degrees and press for 15 seconds. After that, cut the excess stabilizer.
