1. I AGRE on: Avoid adhesive strip sleeves, that can cause damage and glue lose power over time, non glue sleeves are safe! 2. I Recommend: I keep every piece of the record separate, like in layers, artwork beside the lyrics sleeve and record, I never store anything inside other, I want prevent ringwear or any cut on the artworks or bends on corners, of that way I NEVER need pull out a lyrics sleeve from a jacket, many people bend corners of the sleeves for insert again in the jacket. 3. I prefer avoid shelves! avoid exposed records to the normal ambient, humidity of the ambient etc. is better use record acid free storage cardboard box, everything keep it close! records are safe. Also WOOD! is not good for records, wood add acids to the records over time. Remember records are made of paper too! have fine prints on, so I avoid any wood touch the records. Also I recommend better outer sleeves, those looks very basic, the best sleeves are made of Mylar.

hi Ian, I'm a hobbyist of preservation of old documents, valuable comics, archivist etc... so records are not too far of that, why? because records are made of paper too (artworks), IMO records should be treated like fine prints arts. Actually I want write a big article about all this, or make a video (I'm not have youtuber skills like you hehe but... maybe later). I like your channel a lot, best wishes ;)

I practically follow every single step you've shown in the video. I store the vinyl into MOFI inner sleeves and put them backside outside the cover to prevent seam splits or other damages to spines and corners. I'm using to attach the hype stickers to the external plastic bag where I store the covers, if it's a gatefold album, otherwise I cut only laterally the original shrinkwrap (if not gatefold) to maintain the record in its original sleeve and with eventually the hype sticker in it. Inside the cover I always store booklet and original inner sleeve into another sleeve for better protection. I store all my records into Kallax shelf's too and I'm using a suitcase only for 7". Great video as always!

You can actually get sticky resealable sleeves where the sticky part is on the back and not the flap so it won't damage the artwork

I have those on all my records. They are called Blake sleeves. Never had one stick to my records - ever (but I do set them down away from the record sleeve when I play one, just to be sure!). Lots of good advice in this video but I wish people would not call records 'vinyls' (or 'vinyl'). Vinyl is what they are made of, not what they are. I know I might be nit picking but having had a record collection since the late 1960s it grates on me a bit. Just call them records, or albums. :)

A lot of shops in Japan put those sticky covers on things, not just records, but also American comics. Fortunately whoever makes them has now had the bright idea of putting the glue on the outer edge and not the flap, so they're actually useable.

You're one of only several people I know of that actually genuinely knows how to treat vinyl records, Ian 👍 I come from the school of thought that believes the only thing that should touch the record is the stylus (diamond) Though in extreme cases I can recommend the Keith Monks cleaning machine - they come back like new with anti static properties 😃

HiViNyws channel Hi Ian. I'd love to own a Keith Monks cleaning machine, though they're very expensive. My dealer does batch cleaning only with a minimum of 10 LP's I rarely do this as my chosen dealer is a 70 mile drive away, and it's expensive, but worth it. I had the original 1970's The Wall (Pink Floyd) cleaned, and it sounds better than my recently bought 180gram remastered copy in terms of noise but not dynamics. 👍

I buy many used LPs and I still can't believe how many finger prints and dust contamination I find when searching through the bins. Back in the day when I bought new stuff, I and people that I knew were much more careful with them because we knew that it was hard to completely remove and you could hear it. I heard that the liquid stylus cleaner contains alcohol, and sometimes that will dissolve the glue used on the cantilever, so it should be avoided. I read somewhere that someone recommended moongel damper pads (made for drums) to clean the stylus and after I've tried it for a couple of months I've gotta say it was good advice. They can be found cheap online. Oh and as always, love your videos.

Dear Buddy :-D you are right, i would not recommend liquid stylus cleaners...not good for the glue used on the stylus-cantilever interface. But occasionally, just occasionally, besides using the Onzow Zerodust, one may need it to help clean things up a bit. Hehheh!.... Thank you my friend!!! See you again Buddy!!!

As a scratch DJ I chuckle at the amount of delicacy you audiophiles use. My camp of people have no problem grabbing a record from wherever and treating it more like a tool than a delicate gemstone. It doesn't effect the sound quality as much as audiophiles want you to believe.

@HiViNywschannel 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your feedback and saying it out loud! :-D I really treasure your comment! You have also answered something which I wanted to ask any DJ for a long time: :-D how come you guys can handle the records in a less delicate way and yet the sounds are still great after much use!?! Now from your above comment, ... I know! :-D Thank you my friend!!! Very much!!! Sincerely, ian.
@kendo512
@kendo512 8 жыл бұрын
Probably a couple of factors: 1) we use needles made for scratching. I've seen a few audiophiles claim that turntablist needles like the M44-7 are not as high fidelity as whatever needle they use. Whether that's true or not I don't know, but perhaps a more high fidelity needle would pick up on the dust/grime on our records. Second factor would be that we scratch and cut and generally make a whole lot of complicated sounds which might also mask any imperfections in the vinyl. I dunno. Anyway I enjoy your positivity. Peace friend.

If you are talking about the material of the record, yes it is vinyl because you only have one type of vinyl material but we are talking about records... Yes, you say "vinyl record" and plural "vinyl records" but when we say "vinyl" we are refering to the record and not to the material so, Ian, you can say "vinyls" there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Don't worry.

Agree with everything apart from the stylus cleaning. I try to dry clean 90 percent of the time...usually lowering my stylus onto blu tac as recommended by Soundsmith. If I do use liquid cleaner, I would just clean the tip and avoid going too far up the cantilever. You will get no sonic benefit by doing this and liquid may enter the cartridge. This is all of course my opinion though....
@HiViNywschannel
@HiViNywschannel 5 жыл бұрын
True I agree my friend🤗!! Dry clean is great most of the time. We just need to be diligent and clean it once before playing and once every other pkayed side😄🎵🎶🎵🎶🎶🎶...at least that's what I do nowadays. Liquid cleaning too much may destroy the glue that affixed the stylus to the cantilever. I stand corrected. Thank you for your kindness and time supporting. Warmest Regards Brother 😁

I would gladly help you along: it is a good cartridge, even in tonal balance and detailed enough to indulge us in the finer points of resolution/analogue magic and bliss. However, at US$600 per piece, I would say it isn't good value considering that a $260 Nagaoka MP200 beats it easily in all sound parameters and enjoyment💪😄✌🎵🎶🎶🎵🎶🎶! I hope this information comes in useful in your vinyl endeavours. Warmest regards and we keep on spinning records! ~ ian

As usual,, I enjoyed your video. As another commentor wrote, I am slowly working my way through as many of your videos as I can! I just got my P1 set up properly and I have two questions: First is there anyway to adjust where the dust cover can be “parked”? Maybe I will get used to it, but I really find it a pain to lift it all the way to the 90° angle every time I open it, which is the only place it will hold in place; Second, I have problems with my hands and I am no longer able to hold the record with my long finger on the center hole and my thumb against the outer edge. I can handle it with both hands on the edges, but it’s not always possible to do that. Therefore, I usually pull it from the sleeve using my fingers as far out on the edge as I can and then try to get my second hand around on the fopposite edge. I don’t like touching the outer edge ring, but I can’t think of any other way to really do it. Just thought I’d ask if anyone has any thoughts. Thanks again for all you do!

On the Corner - nice. This video should be MANDATORY in the VC. perfect. Any VCLT I have ever gotten, the letter goes right in the record. I'm not an outer sleeve guy, but that's me :) I have told VC members that new inners are a must, but most importantly, they let you know that you cleaned the record properly - If I see an original sleeve I know that I haven't cleaned it yet.

+dixielandfarm It is okay my brother, not being an "outer-sleeve" guy... :-D I understand how you feel about it... makes everything slippery(difficult to grab a bunch and pull them out) and the edges of the outer sleeves make the spine blurred out so you can't read the the vinyl album's name & artist easily right? Your part about having the vinyl cleaned and then using a new inner sleeve makes a lot of sense! I do that to used vinyl records and new ones as well... slotting my own inner sleeves as an indicator too that "these are the ones that have been cleaned."... because, how many of us can clean all records in our collection att one go, and since we can't finish cleaning the whole lot at one go, how many of us actually bothered to key in the database in our computer/ or writing down in a book of those records cleaned? Hahaha... yes to NEW INNER SLEEVES after the cleaning! Thank you Chris!!! Sincerely, Ian.
@dixielandfarm

+HiViNyws channel Blake told me that his flapped sleeve he uses the foldover so you can see the spine, but I know others used it on the open side so they can just pull out the inner and never remove the jacked from the sleeve. While "his" designed sleeve is not nearly as sticky, I have had it stick to my covers when not being careful, so I just gave up on any sleeves unless the jacket is very fragile or super valuable.

Hey! Can I ask what your friends who store the inner sleeve outside the cover do when it's a 2lp? Do they put one in front of the cover and one behind?
@HiViNywschannel
@HiViNywschannel 8 жыл бұрын
ah yes! We put 1 LP behind the front cover (between the 2 gatefold cover flaps), and the 2nd LP behind the rear cover. And we would use a sheet of vinyl paraphernalia that came with it, e.g. a lyric sheet or a photo sheet that came with the LP,,, further behind the 2nd LP as sort of a cover sheet between this 2nd LP and the outermost the plastic sleeve. I think you've gotten it right anyways :-D !!! Thank you my friend. Happy holidays and may you have a happy time spinning all your vinyl!!!! Sincerely, Ian :-)

szidon mcnulty Yes brother :-), the B&Ws have always been the mainstay in my main hall system, while the Harbeths did their duties in my room. I recently sold the Harbeths woops!... I hope I can always improve and do better for all of you. Best Regards, Ian.

Hey Ian can you tell me what did you like about the B&W's over the harbeths, which made you sell them, I'm currently a Vandersteen guy. You didn't sell the Avid did you and if not what are the differences between it and the rega rp6.
@HiViNywschannel
@HiViNywschannel 9 жыл бұрын
Dear Brother Mr McNulty, it is tough. I do it short: I bought my SuperHL5plus in oct2014 happy believing 6moons etc reviews. Put them in my room system. Never did AB with my B&W before. Until Feb2015. I did. I shifted the harbeths out and did AB testing to and fro using same tracks and swapping the positions of the speakers to and fro. It was not easy. But I did it. Brother McNulty, my goodness... It was very painful for me to admit... after doing AB with B&W vs Harbeths in my hall as mentioned. I realised that Harbeths were atrocious. Read carefully: Harbeths lack clarity, details all muffled. Sound stage not believable. Extremely unclear. No palpability of vocals and instruments. Flat. Uninvolving. Shockingly poor. Guess what? Vocals sounded thin and scrawny. The B&W trounced it completely by light years in ALL parameters. Airy, clarity, pinpoint imaging, frequency extensions at both ends, vocals carry MORE WEIGHT and meaty!!! Just what a human voice SHOULD sound. Brother McNulty, ALL. BY MILES AND MILES apart between the 2. Come the interesting part: i played piano tracks. The Harbeths sounded warm and resonant and what seems like correct timbre as what so many harbeth fans bragged about. I thought, "how can the B&W sound better in ALL parameters than the harbeths but perhaps 'lose' out to the harbeths? Is this possible?!?" I checked with my wife's friend who is a piano teacher. Listened to her grand piano. And realised somethjng: on those middle notes and higher pitched notes/keys, there actually weren't ANY bass resonance and on the nd to higher pitched notes, piano actually sound thin. I went back to do the AB. And thus I realise : Harbeths GIVE FALSE bass resonances when they WERE NOT meant to be there!!!!!! The B&W gave the actual rendition of the piano. NOT HARBETH! It was painful for me to admit it, money wasted. I realised that Harbeths are just performing very poorly for their prices and had us duped into believing that those additional bass resonances are what is "correct timbre". Harbeths gave fake and false bass resonances when they are not supposed to be there at all. Awful speakers. POOR clarity. The Harbeth fans always like to criticise believers of other brands as being duped into believing that the clarity exhibited by other speaker brands are actually just "accentuated high frequencies" and that other speaker owners mistook brightness as clarity. No. The Harbeths in fact, are the wrong ones. Highly unclear, highly inaccurate. Harbeth fans also like to say that people like you and me who like vandersteen and b&w, etc brands, are enjoying hifi, while they the harbeth fans are enjoying music. Gosh. They are so wrong. We are the ones who are enjoying music and they are listening to hifi, speakers with colored sound.

szidon mcnulty brother I thus sold my harbeths very quickly in Feb2015. The older videos feature my Rega RP6 :-) which I bought in May 2014. I gotten my Avid in mid February 2015 and installed it in my hall system:-) , but I STILL kept my Rega RP6, now doing duties in my room humble system. I love the Rega too much to sell it. I am keeping it :-D. Rega formed a major part of my formative years...hahaha months...of vinyl analogue appreciation. Although the Avid has taken its place in my hall system now, I continue to highly respect my Rega RP6 and value it as the most important part of my music appreciation and hifi journey. I am keeping it :-)

Hey Ian when you get the chance do a video on how your system has changed and your impression of the changes and don't forget that Avid Video because many members are curious, thanks. I had a Rega P3-24 and loved it after the groove tracer upgrades, which are available for your RP6.

hello Ian!! is it safe for me to place my expedit shelving unit vertical like a divider?
@HiViNywschannel
@HiViNywschannel 8 жыл бұрын
One of my friends use it as a divider for his room...and used to place many vinyl records within the Expedit/Kallax shelves! :-D He has since removed the records and placed it at another vinyl rack. My advice is not to have it free standing and stack with vinyl records...because if somebody accidentally knock into it, the whole shelf may fall to one side. You may avert this by having a bed pressing/supporting on one side, and having a sofa pressing/supporting the other side... so nobody accidentally knocks into it :-)... Best Regards to you Jeremy!

Very good video. I also use Khallax. Also I have been searching for these vinyl storage boxes from a first time I accidentally saw one of your video, so thanks for pointing me to a right direction. The only thing I would disagree with you is how often you need to clean your stylus with cleaning liquid. The dust itself can be removed with a stylus brush, so liquid could be used once in a month.
@HiViNywschannel

I can't agree with you about cleaning the stylist after every play, if your record is clean already why do you need to clean the stylus all the time. I had the same 2m bronze stylus on for 8 years I cleaned it when I heard distortion only it lasted that long. I sold it to somebody else in there weren't even complaining they thought it was a new stylus. For me clean your stylist every time could damage the stylist as far as I'm concerned clean it only one necessary sorry!!!!😎
