Dinah Washington - For Those In Love
Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak
Gravediggaz - 6 Feet Deep
Waylon Jennings - Honky Tonk Heroes
Blossom Dearie - Blossom Dearie
‘Blossom Dearie’ lays out Dearie’s basic mission: music that transports the listener to a room where she herself might be singing directly to them, the kind of intimate room that now feels lost to another time and place. It’s no wonder her records, with their specific yet classic sound, have become common in movie and TV soundtracks (and less glamorously, Starbucks playlists) - they’re a cheat-code for sophistication that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
“When Thin Lizzy’s 'Jailbreak' was released on March 26, 1976, rock ’n’ roll was at a fascinating crossroads. The old-school dinosaurs who led ’60s rock - The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones - were still standing but limping along, already sounding like nostalgia acts to younger listeners. The next generation of arena-rock groups - Aerosmith, Kiss, Black Sabbath -were grounded in a more flamboyant, “party till you puke” sensibility that would soon be subsumed by the ascendent heavy metal movement. 'Jailbreak' would prove as foundational to the future sound of metal as AC/DC’s 'High Voltage' or Motörhead’s 'Motörhead,' just as Thin Lizzy’s no-nonsense musical approach informed the sensibility of punk.”
“Dubbed the Queen of the Blues and the Queen of the Jukeboxes - titles Dinah Washington used herself - she nevertheless resisted genre orthodoxy, and was clearly resentful whenever she was asked to explain or categorize her vast catalog. And yet, her omnivorousness has made consolidating her legacy a knottier task than most are willing to take on. Compared to Billie and Ella - inarguably her peers - Washington’s reach was broader, more challenging to sort into canons and best-of lists. Pop and blues and big band singles were recorded and released without an easily traced chronology or progressive narrative. The Queen could do it all, so why wouldn’t she?”
“Part of why Gravediggaz's '6 Feet Deep' continues to be hailed and viewed so favorably after all these years goes beyond its actual contents and instead in how it was marketed and branded. The horrorcore narrative certainly wasn’t hurt by placement in multiple horror films. While all '6 Feet Deep’s' big-screen film soundtrack features likely provided desirable licensing fees and additional promotion for '6 Feet Deep,' it simultaneously hammered home this idea of Gravediggaz as a novelty act as opposed to the multifaceted conceptual art-as-revenge project it actually is. As evidenced by Paul’s next releases apart from the group, it remains a tonally singular record in a broader discography.”
“On 'Honky Tonk Heroes,' Waylon Jennings had no one else to answer to, and the joyful mess of the album testifies to the kind of magic that can happen when you finally cut a lifelong misfit loose. 'Honky Tonk Heroes' isn’t Jennings’ first great album, but it was the first that captured his wild-hair energy instead of attempting to tame it. It belonged completely to him. It was so liberating that it would unleash a series of triumphs. This is the birthplace of the iconic 1970s Waylon, the one who would go on to slalom across the rest of the decade on a series of increasingly brilliant albums and mountains of cocaine. Waylon Jennings transformed himself into the Waylon, the leader of a movement forever altering the perception of country music in America.”

Great video Michael. I’ve fallen for the VMP albums and I was pleased to learn that they almost match an early press. BTW the UK first press will have TICH AND QUACKERS etched on side 1, and MANCHESTER UNITED etched on side 2. Any decent seller should be able to verify this for you prior to purchase. Cheers and keep them coming.

I also find it telling and concerning that a nameless German engineer, working with what was probably a second generation tape at best, was able to make an arguably better sounding album than one of the best present day engineers could do with the actual master tape…I wonder if these magnetic tapes are degrading faster than we hoped. Maybe we will owe Mofi a debt of gratitude for preserving them digitally as best as they could.

Re: Thin Lizzy 'Jailbreak' I've fond memories of hearing it over a transistor radio Summer '76 while swimming in my neighbors backyard pool. A few years later I'd a roommate with a couple of their LPs and we'd make them play 'Jailbreak' and 'Live & Dangerous' .over and again .. some years later me and my then roommates caught Thin Lizzy live at the Offenbach Stadthalle (loved that venue) on the 'Chinatown' tour, but 'Black Rose' was the LP we had on repeat. Fond memories. There is a BBC Thin Lizzy documentary on YT divided in 4 parts if you're interested. I watched it some years ago. My VMP pressing has sa light warp on the outer rim - noticeable on Sida A, but I doesn't bother me enough to haggle with VMP. Re: splatter vinyl - I'd ordered madlib 'Sound Ancestors' with this month Essential - also on B&W and it looks awesome. Very pleased. Lastly, a week ago I scored a 2nd hand, NM copy of Davis & Coletrane Paris Live (sold out at VMP) - no listening notes and no obi, but I'm pleased to have found a NM copy 👍 Glad you're pleased with this months releases ... think I might add that Gang Starr LP to next months order.. Be well, be safe.

Great review Michael. I bought the Waylon Jennings / Billy Joe Shaver dianna wahongtonand Thin Lizzy which are enroute and can’t wait to hear them. Although hip hop isn’t my favorite, that Grazediggaz looks amazing and I may go back and get it as well. In terms of the “Jungle of discogs” you’re absolutely right but one trick is to insists that the seller confirm condition as per goldkkine standards and to verify the runout info for that pressing. It will at least make it more likely you get what you pay for. And if not it makes the returns easier.

Yes the new Thin Lizzy releases are great. People are going nuts about the sound. Granted Kevin Gray is great. But I'm not sure if people realize that a few years ago, the surviving members of Thin Lizzy actually re-recorded the albums in the studio. (The instruments, not vocals, of course). Because the original recordings back in the 70's weren't recorded so well. The original Jailbreak album especially always sounded thin and lacked low end. Scott Gorham said in an interview, he wanted the music to hold up to the sound of contemporary bands on the radio. If everyone knows this already, I apologize.

Michael, I have a UK 1st and I think almost the same as you. If the original is 100, the VMP is 95%-98% of it. The UK has a little more top end (very slight). If you have one of these two, you don't need the other. Of course I will keep both because .... well, you know why :) The UK cover is a gatefold with the illustration of the band printed on the inside (under the die-cut window). You can look at photos on discogs.

This Gravediggaz is the ultimate vinyl press of that album, yet incomplete. As you stated, there is something missing here and that's the song Pass The Shovel. It was on the original UK press which was released under the name Niggamortis. I was really hoping for it to be on this VMP pressing and it would've been perfect. But that was wishful thinking on my end. I'm not too mad though. I have a CD copy of Niggamortis, hence i still have Pass The Shovel in physical form.

For Records like the Thin Lizzy, don't buy on Discogs for overraised prices. Go with your Dog on Fleamarkets. I get the UK first pressing VG++ for 14 Euros and the german first pressing for 12 Euros. Soundwise not great differences, but the UK has a deeper bass and and a bit more depth. But both are top sounding. The advantage of flea market purchases is that you can evaluate the condition yourself based on your standards, at least visually. If a record has no optical scratches, you will rarely be disappointed after a wash. Just a tip: never look at records in the sun, because the many hairlines you see then, keep you from buying. Hairlines are usually not audible, unless you feel them when you wipe over them.

the gravediggaz is not really missing a song, if you compare it to the US original, but the are one or two short skits / interludes missing i guess for legal reasons.. read the discogs comments for more infos.. plus the european OG had one bonus track, which should have been on the VMP reissue.. so i would not say, this is a "definitive" version of this album, but i still really love to finally have it for a reasonable price.. and it sounds freakin amazing!

Sorry to hear you picked up Germany copy of the TL record; not a bad thing but not what you thought you ordered of course. I run an online store via Discogs and I can tell you that there are methods in place to ensure that this kind of mix-up doesn't happen. Naturally, this could be simple human error as it really is a minefield out there with dozens of different versions sometimes. Here in my store every LP and sleeve in it's entirety is meticulously checked right down to the Run-Out-Groove Matrix (with a magnifying glass!) and if it does not match the Discogs description 100% then it's always possible to create a new entry if it's important enough. (I admit I've messed up a couple of times for example on a well known Stomu Yamash'ta sleeve the position of a tree on the rear cover artwork is significant!). The wrong country pressing however is a schoolboy mistake. Contact the seller and explain what has happened. In practice as they have sold you an item that is incorrect they should offer a full refund including return shipping costs. If not then simply contact Discogs/Paypal; it's a hassle but that's the way it goes.

Worst part of Discogs is sellers listing records erroneously under the wrong version. Horrible. My biggest pet peeve. My suggestion to you is, before you pull the trigger, get proof the version you are purchasing is the one they actually ship to you. Photographic proof. As always look at ratings and read the negative reviews because those tend to be from serious record collectors.

Guttentag Michael, thanks for this great new video ! A new topic that I'd like to discuss is the washing of the vinyls. This is very important matter to me, whether we talk about first pressings or a brand new ones. Before listening, all of them need to be washed with a very good cleaner according to your hi-fi configuration. If not, any comparaison is definitely biased. Could you please talk to us about that topic ? Thanks. Denis

The music will always be more important than the packaging. There are some great presentations out there that protect some awful vinyl pressings. Just because something isn’t wrapped in gold foil doesn’t make it any less worthwhile if the sound is fantasy. There are plenty of MoFi records that have gorgeous jackets, the Miles Davis releases immediately come to mind. This personal vendetta is a bit much.

I don’t want any more kind of blue or tapestry for the millionth time. VMP are doing some stuff from analog and classic titles, but also many other genres. I was wondering. You show ecletic styles you have on vinyl- country/hip hop/jazz/rock etc. are you collecting ALL genres? I am curious as the music fans i know, including myself usually concentrated on certain styles, never on ALL styles. It looks you but them all just for collecting, not essentially for listening, for instance , I do not hold ANY country album in my collection, and VERY few Hip Hop, only if they somehow emerged with Jazz. I never buy a record just to locate it on the shelf, if you see what I mean. thanks.

Why did you not order an original Irish pressing of Jailbreak by Thin Lizzy? Why order a British one?

Michael- when I look at your earlier videos from two years ago compared to the Michael of today, it seems to me like two different people. The old Michael seemed somewhat dour, non-smiling, lacking enthusiasm. The new Michael is cheerful, confident, full of enthusiasm. I’m not sure how to account for the difference. Maybe it’s the beard? Whatever the reason, I like the NEW version!

Looking at VMP. You choose one genre ? That’s how I read it. Did you sign up for all four. Don’t you end up with a lot of stinkers

"Tonight there's gonna be a jailbreak... Somewhere in this town" Hmmm... i think it will be at the jail Phil! Can't imagine it would be elsewhere. Not the sharpest knife in the draw is our Phillip. Can pluck that Bass though.
