I highly recommend this type of flooring. We had a flood in 2016 with over an inch of mud left on the flooring glued to a cement pad in a converted garage. We used water and a squeegee to push the mud out, scrubbed and bleached the vinyl and it still is great. The flooring has been down since 2004.

I love the vinyl planks. We bought homebase ( Uk DIY store ) value range planks for our hallway from the front door all the way through, the hall is around 35ft long and around 7ft wide, they were put down about 10 years ago and they have coped with a very busy house, people in and out constantly, 6 cats and a dog with numerous pee accidents, furniture moved over it, appliances dragged and pulled over it, floods from the cupboard that houses our 2nd washing machine, due to water coming up through the floors ( it’s the house that jack built ) I could go on about the abuse the floors had but I won’t , the floor has stood up to everything and is only just now starting to fail, the last 2 months with all the water under the house the wooden boards under the planks has swollen, creating separation between the planks but that’s it, we used them in our old house as well in the spare bedroom, the kitchen and the bathroom, and after the wooden boards have been replaced and the water issues dealt with we will replace it with the same, I’d never go back to wood floors or laminate flooring ever. If your in doubt about using the vinyl planks forget the doubt and do it, just don’t buy them from random places like wish 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Regards from a very sunny eastbourne in south east England xx

First off based on what I have seen the gentleman used a 2mm thick product. I've been selling LVT for 31+ years. Since this was a DIY I understand the lack of some knowledge. No dealer should recommend any vinyl for home use under 3mm thick as it will telegraph joints as he mentions. 2mm is used more in apartment housing or in areas of low traffic or out of the way where appearance isn't a main issue. He also mentions the gaps caused by the high heat that was running in the kitchen that caused the gap in the endjoints. While that might have contributed to the gap the main issue is only 3mm or higher thicknesses in LVT has a fiberglass layer for dimensional stability. In addition the higher quality materials have usually been annealed which a process at the plant where the vinyl is "preshrunk" to not get technical . A third reason may be that the glue has been compromised there. Only measuring the plank itself will tell that and finally the wood subfloor may not had been secured properly. Many DIY installers are unaware that in a 4x8 subfloor there needs to be 54 staples in the board; 1 every two inches on the perimeter and every 4 inches in the field using a divergent NOT a chisel point staple(which could work it's way out down the road and cause a lump) Overall the floor looked well installed and seems to have met the home owner's expectations which is all one can hope for.
@hat2flat
@hat2flat 3 жыл бұрын
I agree, except 'telegraph' is not a verb. Also at 11:10 "You're putting down a 1/4" mahogany to glue it to". As someone with 31+ years experience, what are your views on that?
@keithlewis8952
@keithlewis8952 3 жыл бұрын
@@hat2flat Sorry George but telegraph is definitely a verb in the flooring world. Been used for decades to describe the how the texture of a subfloor shows through to the top of a new floor whether from debris under the floor or not properly prepping the subfloor. As for your mahogany question. the staple concept still applies to proper secure the sheet; Staples spaced 2" around the perimeter of the board and every 4"inches in the field; otherwise the possibility of the subfloor "moving vertically" exists. You also need to watch because it is very easy to miss a staple as the gun will blow a hole even when the gun is empty. Makes a slightly different sound but easy to miss. You may need to do a little patch work over top of the staples; that's an installer call. Naturally your 1/4" mahogany needs to be smooth one side and should be APA approved. Some installers prefer an exterior grade as the glue used to put it together can handle moisture from the glue better but I seen discussions on it lately. I always used exterior with no issue but that was over 10 years ago and things change but my clients are haven't really mentioned it. Also check you joints before going forward. Had a job once where it was an older structure and the things bowed worse than a swayback horse. People had been shoving shims in for decades. The installation failed even though the installer did everything right. Hope that helps.

@@rickjohansson3202 I'm familiar with Gerfloor out of Tennessee I think. I hope you used a floor grade primer. Primer is used to trap the dust since you can't mop the subfloor, You also should have rolled it with a 100# roller to help the bond. Hope it all works out.

@@keithlewis8952 thanks for the info! I did not and I’ve seen some areas where the glue have not adhered well “enough” but it is in low trafficked areas. I live in a rental flat so this was merely to improve the look in the kitchen. I did add a removable protective cover between the existing floor and the vinyl floor not to damage the existing flooring, should the landlord force me to remove it. When we buy a house and add this type of flooring to it, I will definitely keep this in mind! Great tip!

We have had these floors in our home for almost 14 years and would have nothing else. They are so much warmer in the winter and cool in the summer. They are cushioned so most items that are dropped don’t break, including myself!! Over the years I’ve taken several very hard falls that must likely would have resulted in broken bones on hardwood, laminate or tile, instead only a bruise or two!!! Here’s a tip, if you want a shine without being slippery, after mopping use Rejuvenate!!! It leaves them so polished they still look wet! We've got a dark version of this in our kitchen/dining area, the one thing I'd say is don't go dark, the scratches show up way more than they do on lighter shades. It looks fantastic, but doesn't stay that way. When we eventually redo it we'll go a lighter shade I think. Was thinking about engineered wood for the rest of the house, but after the comments about how the joints go with seasonal change I might have to revisit that. We've got carpet atm, but it's not wearing well despite us buying expensive wool carpet with the best underlay we could get.

The hardwood floor guy said the damage in places was too deep and the layer of wood too thin to sand and refinish. This weekend the hardwood floor guy came back and installed the VPF, like you, in the living areas and the kitchen. The change was drastic and we are happy with the look. When we gut-renovated our own live/work space 5 years ago, we installed oak hardwood flooring in our kitchen living area and bedrooms. I have a similar floor, and it's been great...the one mistake I made was in not sealing the edges of the bathrooms and kitchen, so when a very small leak due to an improper shower installation from condensation that dripped down the edge of the shower, ending up under the floor caused mold, I learned my lesson.

We had the "Luxury Vinyl" wood look put in our bedroom and adjacent bathroom also because we have a door in our bedroom that goes outside to the patio and we have 3 dogs that sleep in the house. After 2 years of having this floor and even having water from our tub going on the floor, there is not a mark on it. I still cannot believe it. I'm going to wait another couple of years and look at how it's holding up and if it's still as great as it has been then I'm going to do the rest of the house in it. I grew up in a beautiful home that was built in the 30s and had hardwood throughout, so I was really hesitant to use this product but I'm lad I did.

Word of caution if you install vinyl flooring get the hybrid type that is hard and ''locks'' into place, not the one the glues onto the ground. If the installer uses a bad adhesive, or you have moisture issues or any other sudden temperature changes (especially near windows) the adhesive can fail and you will get planks swelling up and lifting all over the place.

So much warmer on your feet, waterproof and if I drop a glass or anything no shattering and cracking the tile. When I do replace many years down the road, vinyl. We installed "Karndean","Lay Flat" luxury vinyl plank flooring that can be installed without glue. Ours was installed with a light layer of glue. Long story short we ripped up that floor tiled the kitchen. Our dog came back to life big time, such a dramatic change. Ever since then I would never consider fake flooring again. I have the plank vinyl in sky gray and love it. The only problem I've had is from my infrared fireplace. I use it exclusively to heat my mobile home and one of the legs was cracked so the floor underneath it is scorched. But also it was the coldest winter on record. If I was fussy I would be able to lift that plank and replace. It's a great product for mobiles because the humidity is high and also being on the west coast is higher humidity. People ask about shoes when they come over and I just say leave them on.

We were renovating and have only 1 access to house so EVERYTHING comes in/out across these floors. So easy to keep/clean. No marks/scratches at all. We did get a floor leveling cement down first to ensure floor was perfectly level and also got an underlay down but honestly its perfect. We are delighted with it and everyone who has seen it loves it too. Would highly recommend.

A couple of things. First great review! Vinyl Plank is a great product, Full Disclosure I sell it for a living. In the beginning of the video you refer to the product as Vinyl Tile. The product you are describing is vinyl plank. Secondly the issue of it "Being Thin" is true if you bought the 2 mm plank. you can always go to a 3 mm or 5 mm thick backing to help with a ruff subfloor but doing great floor prep usually will take care of it. Glad to know you enjoy the product and I am looking forward to reviewing other videos from you.

I've just installed it. It feels as hard as really thick laminate, high glossy ones. A bit warmer than wood. But it looks like roll-on laminate. Can't say I love the look of it for that price. And it scratches like crazy. You can't really mask it with anything, cause it's plastic underneath. But with laminate you can. It doesn't necessarily dent like wood, it just ends with scratches. It also lifts up with heat. The bumps he mentioned are true. They market it as "no need to prepare or use underlay", but in reality..you do need to install and prepare everything as with laminate. It's easier to install on your own, though.

Good info and review. I've never seen high velocity heat registers before...interesting. I even put this flooring on the walls of my rentals as a decorative wainscot look in high traffic/impact areas such as stairwell walls, hallways, behind the toilets and anywhere I expect a couch/furniture/bed to be pushed against a drywall wall. Much of my major damage comes from people moving heavy bulky items in or out so I try and anticipate and protect from that.

The dog likes it and they don't lie. For water damage I'd poke under/around the edges every few years in the regular maintenance inspections ... it is always those 'edge-cases' that bite us in the back-end. Auto wax or epoxy (obviously types of epoxy formulations could fill volumes) for gaps? Excellent review as the builder experience informs the inspection process. Loved the little guy stress tester scene. He obviously takes his job seriously.

Buy Renovate Build guess I’ve not had enough experience / knowledge of the planking in wet areas. As well as keeping the main colour scheme in the house of black and white. Both bathrooms are black floor tiles and while wall tiles, to the ceiling. The rest of the house is all a grey planking. (Orbit Athena ), so all of the living areas can tie into the wet areas.

I was in an apartment that had vinyl plank flooring. I had no problems in my unit, but several of them had problems. I moved to a house that the owner put vinyl plank flooring in the kitchen, back hall and laundry room. The flooring in the kitchen has problems with the joints peeling and the planks failing. I spoke with the owner and sent her pictures of the problem. I now have problems with pieces coming up, breaking of the material at joints and curling. She told me it was installed about two years ago. As the rent is due again, I am going to resend the first pictures, plus I am going to take more showing the problem is increasing. I thought if I bought or built another home I would consider vinyl plank flooring, but I won't think about it. I will either go with vinyl sheet/roll flooring, ceramic tile or laminate wood. I had laminate in my house before I moved and had no issues with my joint glued laminate flooring. Click lock joints are a joke.

Hi there. When it was new I was completely impressed by the Karndean product, just like that shown in the video. BUT WHOAH! A couple of years later the flooring by the garden doors was starting to fade. I had changed the carpet by the patio doors to one of the "dirt catcher" types to stop grit being brought indoors from the garden, but it was slightly smaller than the rug that had previously been used. I could then see the outline of the old rug, because the area around it had started to fade. Now, five years on, the flooring is almost fluorescent green where the red colour has completely bleached out - it looks absolutely appalling. Karndean themselves were less than helpful when I first reported this to them, because they wanted "proof of purchase" to honour their warranty, but since my flooring was installed by the people who renovated the building just before I bought it, I didn't have any of the contractors' receipts. I did have a spare box of the planks, so I gave them the batch numbers for Karndean to trace it, but still they didn't resolve the issue. Subsequently my sister had Amtico fitted, and the company that fitted it said that they had previously supplied Karndean, but had had so many problems with it that they would no longer install it. The Amtico fitted in my sister's conservatory, which gets continuous daylight, hasn't faded at all. So, this is my warning to anyone fitting this flooring in their home - be prepared for the floor to fade to green in a few years, unless you live in a cave where there is no direct sunlight.

I installed vinyl plank flooring in 2016 on my first floor and now finishing the 2nd floor. It's not super easy but I think I did a good job and it has worn really well. It has a built-in grain and it's kind of a hickory color, dark brown and blacks. Fairly scratch resistant. And we got it on sale at Menards. I was not aware of this style of flooring but I needed something thicker because my subfloor is not very good.

Homeowners need to read the maintenance and warranty guide. Need to have non staining rugs, non staining felt pads on chairs, etc, close blinds from direct sun like sliding glass door-fading. Although moisture proof not mildew, mold or bacteria proof. High and low temp requirements so hvac needs on during lengthy absence. Mohawk has a very nice waterproof laminate and no I do not work for mohawk. I have animals and my lifestyle needs something virtually indestructible which is laminate. I do not like scratches, fading or if drop something hot floor melting. Vinyl cold on my feet also not laminate. Hides floor imperfections.
