A couple three years ago, I received a Crosley Peanuts record player. Yeah, it's cheap, around 50 bucks. I recall you said cheap isn't good for vinyls. Luckily, I don't really use it much. I do want to get something better. I have fond memories of as a kid playing vinyls on my family turntable, stuff like Michael Jackson's Thriller, Stryper's To Hell With The Devil, and David Lee Roth's Eat 'Em and Smile, plus story book stuff. I seriously need a good holder for the records!

I don't know if you would ever consider doing this but I would absolutely love a video that helps people build a vinyl setup on a specific budget. Something that a new collector like me with a limited budget could put together and get pretty great outcomes with. For example your most recommended setup for $500.

@@OhanaJohan so let’s say I was to end up getting the LP60X, what else would I need to buy just to play my records out loud? The preamp, amplifier, and speakers? And which ones are good on a budget? What I’m trying to get at is I would like to play my records for cheap and don’t want the turntable to destroy them.
@OhanaJohan

@@willmeier5094 pre-amp is built it, you just need a speaker, could even be a bluetooth one. I used to use a bluetooth speaker with a RCA to 3.5mm adapter since my player didn’t have bluetooth capability. That’s all you need, you don’t need anything extra. Just the player, a RCA to 3.5mm adapter (which I think comes with the player) and a speaker that has a 3.5mm input.

It's worth noting that the Audio Technica LP60 line *does* use a counterweighting system: it has a spring hidden in the base that holds the tone arm at tension and prevents the stylus from digging too hard into the record grooves,

2:20 It will NOT carve up the grooves, just wear them out slightly quicker. Every time you play a record you technically wear it out, tracking force just makes that process a bit faster but it takes around 50-100 plays before you might notice the increase in surface noise (and most of us dont play records that many times). Records were designed to handle up to around 6 grams of tracking force and most Crosleys and similar turntables with the red ceramic Chuo Denshi cartridge track a little bit under 6 grams which is acceptable for the cartridge. Most second hand records have been played on turntables that tracked much heavier than modern turntables and they sound fine, unless they have scratches of course (or other groove damage from a defective or damaged/worn out stylus)
@Goldmaaaaan
@Goldmaaaaan 5 ай бұрын
Thank you for correctly explaining this because I kinda rolled my eyes at that part too. The stylus will last you about 20-30 hours of use before getting to a point where it’s worn enough to damage your records, and even then it’s a slow process that takes numerous listens to cause perceptible wear. They DO technically damage your records as claimed, no need to over-exaggerate. I’d also say the Cruisers in particular might damage the outer rim of the record as the top doesn’t hinge very far and is prone to rubbing against the vinyl surface. I’d be more concerned about that, especially if your record already has any amount of warp.

I currently own the RT81 from Fluance and have had it for about three years. It has been a good first turntable for me, but I am ready to upgrade my system to something long term. It all started a few weeks ago when I was researching an upgrade from the atn95e on my RT81. I found that my options were limited with the RT81 and instead of spending $100 for a better stylus, I am now spending over $700 for the RT85 and the iFi Zen Phono preamp. I purchased the preamp last week and have tested it on my RT81 and was pleased with the sound I got out of it. This week I will order the RT85 and pass on my RT81 to my son. I really enjoy your channel and the solid recommendations you make. Your channel, and a few others, have helped me make purchase decisions which I am happy with. The RT85 should give me years more of good music and future upgrades will mostly be to the stereo system. Thank you again.

Here is a rule of thumb. If your TT weighs less than 20 pounds and the tone arme is so light that you could use it as chopsticks,, you will want an upgrade as soon as money is in your bank account. I also had a Project evo carbone with a grado Gold 3 on loan to test. I would rather listen to CD's instead as I would at least get all the frequencies out of the medium.

Bought a used Pioneer PL-300... just like I did, back-when. Stable hanging rotor hall-type brushless DC motor direct-drive located RIGHT-BENEATH the aluminum platter, with quartz phase-locked loop accuracy that produces a level of both wow & flutter (0.025%) and rumble (75db) that no "modern" belt-drive can match, at a cost less than a good mag-cart would run you... even after having a technician go over it! ;)
@TBNTX
@TBNTX 2 жыл бұрын
In my experience, I used a direct-drive A-T 120 USB turntable, and I could hear the motor "cogging". "Cogging" is when the motor pulses itself to maintain speed. I eventually resolved this by adding a heavy disc stabilizer (an AT816). By adding the mass, it helped to maintain the angular momentum. This, in turn, meant that the DD motor didn't have to pulse as much. Nevertheless, I moved up to a Fluance RT85 because it was belt-driven, and it included an Ortofon Blue cartridge.

If you have a little 3.5mm audio jack on your turntable, you can use a two-way cable to register the turntable a microphone to your PC therefore being able to record and keep the music.

I’m convinced that it’s the versatility of really good quality speakers that should be foremost in any setup. My setup includes a Sony PSLX310BT belt drive turntable, a decent quality Sony BluRay player (for cd’s, dvd’s and BluRay discs) and a Philips 4K UHD television all connected into excellent, very versatile Edifier S1000MkII active speakers. I can link my turntable to the speakers via BlueTooth if I wish but instead I’ve chosen to use the RCA. My BlueRay connects up to the speakers with a standard A/V coaxial cable and the TV is connected to the speakers via an optical/toslink cable. It all works great and sounds fantastic. I still have another spare RCA input on the speakers if I want and though I’m not a gamer, I can if I ever want to, connect a gaming console. Like I said, begin with good quality speakers and it will all work out perfectly for anybody.

It’s depending on what direct drive turntable you own, a Technics for example will definitely have less rumble then any of these modern mdf plank tables

Regarding auto-stop; if your player doesn't have that function you can put a power plug with an countdown timer between it. I use that to switch the power off automatically after a certain time. So if if I would forgot too switch the player off it will stop in a reasonable time.

This might sound odd, but I've found that the type of shelves you have, not just their colour has an impact. A lot of newer IKEA-esque, ie flatpack, shelves are at best 12" or so deep, so when I upgraded from a cheaper turntable (not Crosley thank God), the new one wouldn't fit on my shelf. It has a lid so I have to pull it out almost 2" over the edge so I can lift the lid to play anything.

I absolutely love my LP60X. It's easy to use and sounds pretty good. My motor runs slightly too fast at 33.6-33.7RPM, haven't bothered to correct it yet but should be easy enough. I wish they'd make a LP60X pro with a better build and with the same automatic operation.

The cool thing about the Fluance being all wood and gives better sound is literally the reason why Guitars are made of wood. Some have tried metal guitars or plastic guitars but they don’t sound the same at all. So as a guitarist I like the Fluance, it’s like a turntable take of a guitar

Good video! I would add that Hanpin Turntables make the Lp60x, lp120xusb, and several of the mid range Crosleys such as the C100, C200 (dd). The Crosley C6 and C8 are excellent as well. And for folks who like the Pro-ject Debut Carbon, the Pro-ject made Crosley C10 might be a more affordable option (it’s identical.) lastly I would say that there are several good portables with magnetic cartridges out there and in my opinion portables have historically been and continue to be an important part of vinyl record enjoyment.

with Sony PS-HX500 You can rip your vinyl records to 24 bit or DSD. several other usb turntables only support 16 bit. otherwise, for example, there is a preamp to buy that also supports 24 bit

TEAC still makes tape recorders. so then maybe even their receiver and integrated amplifiers have input for tape recorders. so you can also easily record on tape just like on a stereo in the 90's

I'm searching for my first turntable in a long time so I probably saw all your videos (thank you for a great quality content) but I don't remember to see you talking about Raga Planar 1. I'm from London and I'm between an Audio-Technica 120 (I like the style, versatility and quality) but I found a mint Raga P1 for 140 pounds and I don't know if I should go to a P1 or keep my focus in Audio Technica. Thanks for your videos and greetings from London

I have my turntable connected to my computer without using a USB cable. My Amp ( JVC JS-S22) has "Tape Out" RCA connectors. I use a cable that has RCA plugs on one in and the little headphone type plug on the other. On my older Mac there is an input, and output, with the little headphone type plug. I also use Aucacity to clean up the songs before burning them on a CD, or adding them to my iTunes playlist.
