My wife and I had the chance to see him live about a decade ago ate Count Basie Theater in Red Bank, NJ. Age had not dimmed his mastery of the long-form joke - the timing, the inflections, all were as impeccable as they were hysterical!

Bob Newhart was a true original. These monologues where he is the 'straight man' and the clown is the unheard person (usually, but not always, on the other end of a phone) are his unique invention. And they are brilliant. 'Genius' is not a word to throw around, but I don't think it would be out of place talking about Bob Newhart.

My father was a driving instructor, and brought "The Button Down Mind of Bob Newhart" home because of the "Driving Instructor" routine. I was 11 years old at the time. I loved that album then, and 60+ years later I still love it, and all of Bob Newhart's routines. Others have said 'genius'. It is a big word, but I agree with them, Bob Newhart is a comedic genius.

As my father got older he found it hard to drive and mom had to do the driving. My father called her Mrs. Webb every time she made a mistake, which was quite often. Aw now Mrs Webb, you should have turned right there.

Newhart's album The Button Down Mind Of Bob Newhart was the first comedy album to go to #1 on the pop charts. Also, it won best album at the 1961 Grammy Awards. And, it was the first and only time a comedian won best new artist. Bob put comedy on the map in the recording industry. Credit given where credit is due.

I actually looked this guy up purely because he played professor proton in The Big Bang theory. I wondered what all the fuss was about, they seemed to really admire him. I can see why God he's talented.

What’s unexpected is that one of his best friends if not his best friend was Don Rickles. Now, if you don’t know who that is (which is feasible if you didn’t know who Newhart is), look him up. His comedy is rather different from Newhart’s.

Have you seen him in his two different shows? Bob Newhart show where he's a psychologist in 70s Chicago (his wife Suzanne Pleshette married an actor on this show and he was also on the later Newhart show of the 80s, playing a handyman. He's a Vermont innkeeper then...

We saw him at the 'Ice House' in Glendale, California years and years and years ago. He was so funny, we couldn't catch our breath. He is just so clever and smart, a very funny man.

hafiz bahar Rowan Atkinson is very much akin to Newhart, more of a performance artist then a tradition stand up, but Newhart sort of painted stories inside your head with duologue whereas Atkinson laid his jokes bare physically.

@@christelheadington1136 Maybe but unexploded shells were very common at that time. They were still recovering WW2 shells in England and Germany up till the 1990s. Unexploded shells were common on the battle fields of every 20th century war.
