About this Album:
Famed for its distinctive sound, the viola d’amore - literally meaning ‘viola of love’ - is one of the more unusual members of the string family, an instrument that appeared towards the end of the 17th century and which owes its silvery, angelic tones to the symbiotic vibrations between its two sets of strings, one gut- and one wire-based.
This release celebrates the d’amore’s versatility of sound by bringing together some of its finest Baroque repertoire. Beginning with the Ave Maris Stella, an ancient hymn dedicated to the Mother of God, the compilation takes the listener on an absorbing journey that combines the famous with the not so widely known; from Petzold’s illustrious two partitas - which are considered to be on the same level of importance for the d’amore as Bach’s partitas and sonatas are for the violin - to Morigi’s Capriccio and Menuetto, the compilation also touches on various anonymous works, including the delightful Partita in D. Dance movements abound, reflecting the Baroque period’s predilection for all things French.

I am a retired 64 year old professional violist. The viola d'amore is a very difficult instrument to play well. The strings are a lot closer together, the bridge is flatter making it very difficult to play a single string. And tuning this lovely instrument is truly an enormous labor of love and takes forever.

I am an amateur cellist, and bought a seven string Viola Da Gamba. It was difficult at first but with persistence it was doable. I am now playing violin, which is making it easier to think about playing this instrument. Clearly it is tough, but I think worth the effort. And besides you are only 63 with many years of Viola D'Amore ahead of you. : )

It's an injustice that this instrument is not nearly as popular today as it was back then. Those sympathetic strings add so much to the beauty of the sound. It sounds almost like a viola that decided to stop by on Earth from heaven for a little while.

How lovely!! I played viola for 20+ years then took a 10 year break. After mourning it, I am starting from the basics again and getting back into it. This music though!! Never heard of a viola d'amore but I am in love. Found another motivator to keep practicing my viola and maybe eventually can work my way up to this later in life. Life's too short and "music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” -Plato

i use to play the viola but i quit orchestra and now i kinda regret it, viola's are beautiful and whenever i play in together with the orchestra i use to get mad at the violins because i would always make fun of my friend saying "viola's are way better violins are too high pitch and tiny' and my friend would say 'at least we can actually hear ourselves' because no one could her us those were the good times i'm starting freshman year in high school in a week and honestly i can't wait to start printing out music to practice by myself since i'm in band and i play the saxophone, anyway have a great day everyone and stay safe and healthy

Dear Brilliant Classics, Good Evening From Mumbai, India. Terrific Upload on the occasion of Valentine's Day. The Viola IMHO, is as tuneful as the Violin or for that matter as tuneful as the Violin and Cello put together. Many Thanks For Taking the trouble and making the effort to upload this today. I have tweeted about this and added this specific You Tube Video To My List Of Liked Videos. This Viola Music leaves me speechless and I strongly feel that I am in another Dimension as well as place. Have a Great Week -End.

At ca 9.30, it's astonishing how similar the Hardanger fiddle is to this! It too has sympathetic strings and is played with those ornamentations, pizzicatos and chords! No wonder they sound similar. The Hardanger fiddle was invented at the same time as this instrument was in use, so the inspiration is obvious. The Hardanger fiddle is still being actively played in folk music in Norway.

I am so confused. Is this really a viola? Is the violist in 3rd/4th position? The the depth sounds off. What size? And the 🎻 in the picture is strange. What is it?
@selene2951
@selene2951 4 жыл бұрын
It's a Viola d'amore, which is a baroque era instrument. Unlike a modern viola these instruments were tuned in fourths, not fifths like the viola. Sometimes there was a string in the middle tuned as a third. They had anywhere from 6 to 14 strings total, although the ones with high string counts often had half of them as sympathetic strings which cannot be directly played. Those strings react to the vibrations of the primary strings and make an echo or chorus sound of their own. That's why as you said it sounds like the sound depth is off.
