Hi! Thanks for watching (and your letters back! (Wasn’t expecting that😅)) I’m glad we got the time to take Violet Evergarden on before we start the crazy march through December. Wanted to point something out that I couldn’t fit in the video, part of the reason the show has such a good ability to make the viewer cry is due to ITS ability to communicate. Often we meet a character for only a single episode, but in 22 minutes we’re able to completely understand their pain and love, it’s a real feat of storytelling and human empathy. Next month is Hell Mouth so prepare for horror and hyper violence! Also I’m sorry I said “the concept of love” without making a jet set radio reference. It just didn’t fit lol

Maybe the only other anime source that capsulates on human empathy to this level, maybe even more so was Shelter by Porter Robinson. In less than 10 minutes you are able to understand everything that is taking place from both a story & character driven aspect. It's been a few years since Shelter aired but it's level of being able to tell a story in such a short time holds the record in my book. Though in terms of Violet Evergarden it's a journey and one I think people get engrossed and captivated in much more. It's a walk we're willing to take alongside Violet as we see how she evolves and progresses in her emotional state, eventually coming to terms with it all. It's also a rare opportunity to see one's vulnerabilities whilst also reflecting upon your own. Do I or we as human's communicate what we really mean to say and if so is the other recipient/party truly understanding what I'm conveying. It's deep level stuff but you just some how can't get enough.

Violet Evergarden was a hard anime for me to watch, and not just because it had me ugly crying every other episode, but because of how much I found myself relating to Violet, although certainly not because I'm either a combat veteran or a double amputee. I'm on the autism spectrum (the high-functioning end, specifically what is known as Asperger's Syndrome), and many of Violet's idiosyncrasies are ones that I also exhibit: flat affect, difficulty expressing my own emotions and interpreting those of others, difficulty in non-verbal communication, and for a long while I had the extreme bluntness and lack of tact that Violet intially exhibited (the latter of which led to many tense, and sometimes explosive, exchanges). Even though it's a hard watch for me, still, after many viewings, it's one of my all-time favorites, because it's very hard for me to find protagonists that I can relate to. When people with autism are portrayed in media, they're either on the high-functioning savant end of the spectrum, on the end where they're essentially crippled by their autism, or a combination of savant and invalid. so to me it was incredible to find an example in my favorite medium of someone who would fall outside of those archetypes. Never mind that it's KyoAni at their finest, the voice acting in each language is superb, and the writing is fucking incredible. Truly a gem.

Honestly I wish my brother was more like you. More self aware of your own innate communication problems. His Asperger's has developed in such a way that his emotions are normal but he is incapable of understanding empathy properly. It's not that he doesn't have it. He just rarely understands how it's relevant. This compounded with my parents always taking it easy on him has made him quick to threaten or treat others badly because it often gets him what he wants. The thing is, he *geniunely* doesn't understand why it's wrong. He's pushed people so far away with his behaviors and I feel badly for him, but I don't know how I could communicate it properly because it never seems to stick. Your self awareness is a great step in coping with your disorder. I'm very happy you understand what you're dealing with, even if it isn't easy.

Dear Mike and the Bonsai Pop Team, It is with the upmost sincerity when I say that this is the best content I have ever seen from any youtube channel. Your strengths in critically analyzing the themes and motifs within various animes/mangas are unmatched by anybody else I have seen. The reflections and connections that you make between (insert anime of the week here) and the real world are beyond entertaining; they're legitimately thought provoking. I cannot describe how much I have learned about the world, Japanese history and culture, and ourselves as human beings, just by watching your videos. To put it simply, y'all are phenomenal and I wish nothing but the best for this channel and the beautiful people involved with it. Love, Me (and anybody else who feels the same)

@@andreay9935 Have you watched the "Violet Evergarden: the Movie"? "Violet Evergarden: the Movie" completes the story in such a satisfying and emotional way, it's literally a masterpiece. @@piotr004 I did watch it! It went beyond my expectations. The storyline was crafted so well, the narrations being told in the future, past, and present was so clever, and the resolve and closure Violet and Gilbert got was so wonderful. So pleasing to the eyes, but the heart of the movie is the characters and you know what was poetic! Violet prayer to the Ocean was to beloved ones to meet again today, tomorrow and forever. Then Gilbert and her where in the Ocean meeting up again to be together :') What a soulful movie it was.

@@andreay9935 Wow, really nice catch with that, I didn't notice that poetic connection: "Violet prayer to the Ocean was to beloved ones to meet again today, tomorrow and forever. Then Gilbert and her where in the Ocean meeting up again to be together :')" I watched the "Violet Evergarden: The Movie" on 26th December 2021 (I watched everything else earlier and even re-watched the series before watching the final movie) and I literally couldn't think about other things for at least a week (as you can see me here - I am still not fully "over it"). It's a weird feeling, and I have this feeling very rarely - only after experiencing true masterpieces. I compare this feeling to something Ancient Greeks named "katharsis" - soul cleansing. During that period (especially first week) it was somehow like mourning, thinking about watching other series/movies, even playing games, felt like betrayal to Violet Evergarden story. I had to pay tribute to this masterpiece by contemplating only it for some time in my head. Fortunately, I have my family next to me (I watched Violet Evergarden with my mom), so it's much easier to go back to "normal life" (I can't imagine if I were living alone). By the way, I was searching and watching many videos about Violet Evergarden (reactions, reviews, OST) after finishing the movie and I have noticed some comments from you under those videos :) Your comments were always helpful for clarifying the plot, nuances and sharing the emotions. Also, I noted some comments from under those videos. I will copy them for you in my next comment, so I hope you can see there are more people who felt like us about this story :)

Dont forget that there is allways someone who loves you even if this Person cant say it but maybe you are the first who breaks this silence so dont let words be unspoken.

Violet Evergarden always struck me as a hard-faced perspective on not only a soldier's reintegration into civilian life, where in a soldier's life all communication is short and explicit with no implications, it also strikes as a subtle perspective on autism. The naivete of human communication, the misunderstanding of social norms, all of it is a beat-by-beat of how ASD people interact with others.

I have to say that Violet Evergarden is one of the most beautiful, if not the most beautiful anime I have ever seen. The source material, the visual, and the song/sound design are really well crafted. Each episode was like an entire movie condensed into 24 minutes with the same if not more emotional impact, while still manage to carry on the story of Voilet growing as a person and understand her emotion. It is one of those anime that everyone should at least see it once.

For me, the most beautiful thing about Evergarden was the lesson of denial and acceptance. Every character we met had some form of denial going on in their life. For Violet, she denied the fact that Major was never coming back and tried to hide her guilt of her past after she realized the weight of her actions. But, the beautiful thing about Violet is when she comes to terms with it. She learns to accept her past, that she was born and raised as a weapon, that she killed countless of people who had families of their own, and that she couldn't save the person she loved. Even if it took a while, she comes to her own terms and accepts it. I think that's one of the hardest things in life, when you stop fighting negative feelings and you accept them and you're able to move on. I love that they portrayed this idea time and time again. The little girl who had to accept her mother was never going to be there for when she grows up, to the father who has to accept his daughter's death and uses her memory to fuel his work, to Leon and his struggles with having to accept his parents never coming back and finally moving on with his life that had come to a standstill. All these characters had dealt with heartbreak, but they were able to move on and it made them all better people in a way. I think it's just so beautiful and it's a lesson I find so endearing.

One should not so simply and casually spoil episode 10 of Violet Evergarden, but in all seriousness Violet's journey to discover what love is in all of its facets is nothing short of the most cathartic series I have ever watched. As Violet is shaped by her various experiences as an Auto Memories Doll, the viewer is simultaneously challenged to find an answer to the same question that Violet is seeking out, "What does 'I love you,' really mean?" The fact is that in life, too few people understand the depth of those 3 words. They are cheap and thrown out far too casually. Violet Evergarden challenges both Violet and the viewer to journey through love in all of its forms and those who take the time to do so, are rewarded with a much richer, and fuller view of the world. True love, is worth wading through the pain.

I grew up with a sibling who had what we later realized was high functioning psychosis. They didn't have their first genuine episode until I was a teenager, but looking back the signs that something was off were already there. I'm pretty sure having them around was one of the reasons I ended up developing high functioning social anxiety. I literally wouldn't talk to people. I'm not like that any more, but I still can't talk to them. Your description of the show resonates with me and makes me want to see it. I've been following your channel for a while now (apparently I'm one of the few who still gets notifications). The way you talk about these shows has such a level of intimacy that you often don't see from other channels on youtube, aside from maybe Super Eyepatch Wolf. And as a fellow dubs fan i admire your guts to admit that to the anime crowd. Please keep doing what you do. It's more important than you know. And you may have gotten yourself a new patron.

I relate to Violet in a strange way because I hardly ever can tell what my emotions are. I learned to adapt to doing what i saw other people do, I copy what I think would be appropiate. Give and take, but on the literal level. So I'm confused when I'm at a loss for how to react, when I feel like just repeating what I've been given (concrete example being told "I love you") isn't earnest. But then I feel lost, because my emotions aren't very extreme, especially happy ones. I just feel kind of disconnected, like I don't really know what I'm doing at all. Aside from that, I think that Violet Evergarden, as in the show, made me appreciate life so much more. I truly think it's what started me crying at... almost anything, just because I think that I didn't truly let that stuff get to me before. So yeah. Even now, I'm not sure what I'm saying haha, if it's rly what I think or not. Amazing essay

Speaking as someone with autism, I have had to learn communication from scratch. Writing has been the only true voice I've ever had. Even through PTSD and the insanity I faced that I hid from people my whole life, I was never robbed of this one saving grace in my isolation. Learning to communicate with others is nightmarish. I'm 28 years old and only now able to recover from the violence of my youth, where violence and written word were the only languages that changed anything for me. I guess what I'm trying to say is that this series was relatable in a lot of ways that are difficult to relate to due to the uncomfortable way in which our worst uses of communication and its inherent flaws are drawn out into the light by one bereft of basic ability to interact with others. Maybe I'm just rambling.

Dear Mike, Thanks for your kind letter. Through your thoughtful videos I have laughed, cried, and paused to think on life. There were times I was mad at you for your views on the Creator of our world but I have grown to endearingly forgive. You have a deep and passion filled heart and may your love for life live on in all you do. May you grow in so many facets of your life and encourage people to be better. Sincerely, your viewer...Danae Lum 🥰

Once again Mike, you've done an amazing job conveying a greater message through this medium to the viewer. I can, without a doubt say that these feelings are something that has consistently drawn me back to this anime and is one of the big big reasons why I will always come back to it. I am so glad you finally broke down and watched it and I love your takeaway. I think this was a perfect time to release this due to the vicious messages portrayed throughout the media and the weaponization of everyone's words that chip at the soul. I hope everyone can find some solace knowing that there is still a bigger meaning to the words we use and the love we convey to others over different mediums.

The writing in Violet Evergarden is great, and people who call it boring or whatever are looking the wrong way. We start with an intro arc, then seamlessly transition into an episodal format taking some time with her, and back and forth in this pendulum. On top of the thematic material you mention here, yeah VE is awesome

The word I would use is "bitter-sweet". It takes a great deal for a show bring emotions up from the depths of my soul. This show made me cry for the first time since I was a child. Not the sadness, but the shocking beauty mixed with the sadness. Recently, I admitted something to someone who considers me their friend. I've gotten good at being alone. I've grown to like it, and need it.

Your essay vids and the wonderful wholesome tune at the start makes it an amazing listen in my times of difficulty in 2018 and still helps me well to this year. Without y'all, I would not be here composing, drawing and writing to this day after I lost alot in 2018. Thanks Bonsai Pop, I hope to support you more one day!

I just stumbled upon your channel and can I say it's the best thing that's happened to me this year. Sometimes I have a hard time catching some of the meaning behind the anime, so finding your "therapeutic" reviews is a blessing because I can get to have a different perspective on them.

I'm glad you made a video about this series. You're right about the show asking a lot of some people, as most of my friends who tried to watch it have stopped 1-2 episodes in. It makes me sad that so many people don't watch more of this show, because it's a story about communication, it's one among a small number of rarely discussed post-war setting stories, and for someone who is autistic like myself, who always struggles with telling what kind of emotion people are trying to express, it has a special meaning to me.

Dear Mike, I'm glad we can be here for you, and am personally thankful for how sincere your videos are. Many commentators choose to put analysis or comedy foremost to their content, but it is your sincerity and personal relationship with the content that makes your insight so impactful. It is not merely what the anime means, but also what it means to you. Thank you, genuinely.

Violet evergarden is the only anime I've ever thought about in passing as a live-action show for some reason I found myself thinking about the story and about remembering what it was from I could only imagine these characters that portrayed so much emotion so vividly and so humanly as live actors on a stage I had to stop myself and question what it was I was thinking of before I could remember that it was an anime and I am not the kind of person to believe that the medium of animation has limitations I don't believe that but something about how emotional the story was just struck me on a subconscious level as it being real people in a way that no other anime ever had
