Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was one of the most prolific and influential composers of the classical era. Born on January 27, 1756, in Salzburg, Austria, Mozart displayed exceptional musical talent from a very young age. He composed his first piece at the age of five and embarked on a concert tour throughout Europe with his family, showcasing his remarkable abilities as a pianist and composer. Mozart's contributions to classical music are immeasurable, encompassing symphonies, operas, chamber music, choral works, and concertos. His compositions are characterized by their exquisite melodies, harmonic richness, and intricate forms. Mozart's genius left an indelible mark on the world of music, and his works continue to be celebrated and cherished for their timeless beauty and innovation.
The Violin Sonata No. 21 in E minor, K. 304, is a captivating piece within the genre of violin sonatas. Written in 1778 during his tour of Europe, this sonata is notable for its emotional depth and expressive qualities. The first movement, marked "Allegro," is a testament to Mozart's ability to infuse his compositions with both lyricism and drama. It begins with a mournful and introspective theme in the violin, which is then echoed and developed by the piano. The movement showcases Mozart's mastery of musical dialogue between the two instruments, with moments of melancholy and moments of exuberance. This sonata, like much of Mozart's work, reflects the composer's ability to convey a wide range of emotions and musical colours. Mozart's Violin Sonata No. 21 in E minor remains a cherished part of the classical violin repertoire, admired for its elegance and emotional resonance.
Performed by Marcus Yeo and Joselin Ng at Annual Production 2023, 16 October 2023.
