I was told by my infant's violin teacher that I should not learn to play violin along with him because I would intimidate him. Being the kind of mother who wants nothing more than to elevate her children, I complied. I went to every lesson. I knew what was expected, and I did my best to reinforce learning, but there was that day when I remember being so clearly exasperated that I snatched the violin from my child to demonstrate what I wanted from him only to realize I could not show him. It made no difference how many lessons I attended, if one doesn't do the practice work, one can not play the violin. One can not show him. This is what I know for sure. I am 79 years old, and I now am learning to play violin. Thank you for instruction that wasn't available to me back in the day. Thank you!

Your video is helpful but for me if you turned around so you show where your finger tip is contacting the string and how your finger tip is moving on the string it would make this vibrato far easier to figure out and what what needs to be done. to achieve it. Thanks

I love the breakdown! I’ve seen multiple videos where people instruct the same process. During vibrato, I see the arm shake but when they teach it, they focus on movement in the phalanges, others use wrist vibrato. This left me perplexed as to how the arm moves and an instructor replied it’ll move the faster I move my phalanges. I see here that is not the case. I am excited to try this and improve my vibrato. Thank you for sharing your knowledge 🤓

Exactly the same! I have been watching dozens after dozens of videos and everyone is showing phalanges exercises and such but when I see them actually do vibrato they are mainly doing this arm shake!

I haven't had a violin in a while, as my last one got stolen; but I watch videos like this because I have it in the back of my mind that I might want to buy a new one and pick it up again. I was only maybe a year into it at the time, with my main focus always being on guitar and other fretted instruments. I remember my problem with vibrato, though, being that I shake the violin too much, which scratches up my tone. Watching this video, I think it's because I need to be doing inline vibratos. As a guitarist of nearly 30 years my natural inclination is to shake the string for a good vibrato, but that shook the violin too much; which made my bow jump around and give me a terrible sound. I think I need to be doing my vibratos as I would on the high E or in the higher register on guitar; in line with the plane of the neck instead of shaking the string perpendicular to it. I never thought about that and figured maybe I was just holding the violin wrong or not putting enough pressure down with my chin to keep it stable. lol

I think this 07:43 why older people have harder time to learn vibrato is... One, they have played different for years. Two, tightness limitations... For me, i am quite tight in my forearm and hand limiting me turning it outwards. I had this already as a child for some reason. So i would greatly appreciate if you had some tip on how to adress this because i think this is my main reason for not being able to relax and to a vibrato.

I started learning violin at 16, fingering, bowing, and playing in tune wasn't an issue. I had just started learning vibrato when my lessons stopped and I moved away to college. Now 20 some years later, I've tried to teach myself vibrato over the years, but it's still not good. Partly because I wasn't sure I was doing it correctly. I was learning wrist vibrato, but found finger vibrato easier with my first and 2nd finger, but that motion didn't really work with my third finger, so I would then use the wrist vibrato which I have yet to get very even at a faster pace. I will try your method and see how it goes.

It looks easy, and I have decent vibrato on guitar, but my hands just don’t move that way when holding a tiny instrument to my chin, my wrist just doesn’t want to move in that direction… it comes down to muscle memory and flexibility. Children don’t have well developed versions of either. You need not front to back but side to side movement, adults have built rigidity for stability in lifting heavy objects in this regard and that motion isn’t needed for anything else…

Hi, a question on vibrato without a shoulder rest. I have been playing violin for over 10 years now and vibrato is the one thing that I am unable to grasp. I was taught it poorly with my first teacher and am suffering as a result. I've recently been restructuring quite a bit of my left hand technique (practicing 5ths and many different scales) and I am also trying to learn to play without a shoulder rest (I have a very long neck and this has caused me some problems). What I don't understand is how to execute the vibrato while holding the weight of the violin in my left hand. I feel as though I need to support the instrument with the first joint of my first finger but this contact stops me from being able to execute the vibrato action cleanly. I am trying very hard to create space between that joint and the instrument but my fingers often end up at the wrong angle as a result and I know it's not correct because I can feel the strain all down my arm and cannot practice it for very long at all. For the record, I am learning a wrist vibrato. I also have no problem playing scales without a shoulder rest which is normally what people find difficult when making the switch (or so I'm told). I hope someone might be able to help.

Its hard to tell from the camera angle, is the knuckle being flattened to produce the vibrato or just the finger moving on the string? it seems like the finger moving, but in the last example of the adult method it looks like the knuckle being flattened.

Violin shaking is a very common situation. You can try to improve the flexibility and strength of your fingers first, and then try to relax, because if you don’t relax enough, the violin will shake a lot, and if your fingers are not strong enough, it will be difficult to relax. The flexibility of your fingers can also help to reduce violin shaking, if you want to know how, try this kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qp6qg8qXtKuziY0.html
