Try this trick: Wrap a cloth around the scroll and stand up against the wall, the scroll pushing against the wall. It will provide extra support so that your hand can stay more relaxed.

I'm a classical guitarist but I do have a violin for reasons. The muscle memory is a challenge, I tend to do a classical guitar vibrato everytime lol. The only way I can get a decent vibrato with a violin is if I play it like a cello. 😅

It just takes time, that's all. The motion has to develop slowly. Don't worry. Keep practicing it and it will happen Trying to speed it up by sheer will isn't a good idea. That will put tension in the arm. When the muscles are ready, they will naturally start to speed up and stay even. Most people are never patient enough. I've had students who have been working over a year, and still don't have their fully developed vibrato yet.

I love the slow motion in the video - amazing to see such fluid, consistent oscillations :D Great exercises for developing freedom and exploring more colours of vibrato include peg knock, acceleration exercises, thumb stretches and many more. In fact, I just recently made a video on the topic of vibrato, where I discuss things from exercises, phrasing with vibrato, and different styles of vibrato. Would be great if you could check it out. Excellent! I do love how you explained. I learned to play Violin at the age 45. My Husband, a Professional Violinist, as per my request, began to teach me. He an excellent Teacher, and according to him, I was a good student. I played for twenty years, but due to a disease that cause my hands to shake, I stopped, and now after seven years w/o playing, I have decided to play again. So I began a month ago. I am a very determined person, even though I have pretty bad shoulders & neck arthritis. I will continue to do it. I am 73 y/o now. I have been playing at Church. So I am studying my books/ music. By the way, my hands are no longer shaking as bad a they were. Violin is My Second Love. It's the Most Beautiful Musical Instrument. I will be in touch! Thank you. 😊 I will definitely look at your videos.

I was watching another video about learning vibrato and someone commented, "I finally learned how to vibrato after I stopped trying to vibrate my fingers and started to vibrate my violin". Boy oh boy did that simple comment help me so much. I play the viola as an adult beginner and I felt I could never get vibrato no matter how many videos I watched! I just thought about that comment some more and told myself "just do it" and I DID! I am so ecstatic! Didn't think I was capable of it. I can't wait to keep practicing the movement until I feel it flows right when I'm playing a piece.

Literally, the most incredible thing just happened. I have been frustrated for the past week trying to play Meditation from Thais, mainly trying to play the soft parts at the bottom of the bow while keeping my vibrato from shaking the violin and I watched this video, then I started playing the piece again. In about two minutes, i started to let my fingers relax, let my entire hand relax, and all of a sudden I realized that I was playing more beautifully that piece than I have ever played it.

Shorouq Kadair It may be because you try vibrato too early and you haven't got well accustomed to the bow yet. Learn all the 1st position notes first and make sure you can play without much attention to the bow then try vibrato. If that's not the case, keep practicing then, the first step is never easy. I had that problem at first too but now it only happens so rarely.

Move your wrist so that you slide your fingers up and down the strings with a slight pressure, keep your fingers in contact with the save strings the whole way. You can do this with one or multiple fingers. For me it helped me get a feel for the motion I want my wrist to make.

In your daily exercises, try to move each finger up and down in your violin moving your falanges without actually playing any sound. Try to exercise your falanges individually, because they will hurt a bit initially. The vibrato in the violin uses muscles you don't use in your daily basis, you have to work them from scratch. Train your reflexes and your wrist position because the hardest part is to actually vibrate anything while you're playing with the bow. Have patience and you'll get there :)

Violin beginners: have in mind that the vibrato is kind of "pro" techinque. You won't fully control it with just few years of practice, hell I consider myself to be a beginner too. However, if you do start to practise it, it will take several months before you can do a decent vibrato sound. There are other things you should train before the vibrato. This video is great and it shows how much fallange work is needed to use the vibrato. Great job and she's wonderful!

Sometimes that happens due to tension at the neck. It can land at the wrist which then unfortunately tightens the hand range of motion possible. I was taught to practice with a shaker egg. Then I emulated that relaxed motion with the violin and set up my shoulder rest to meet my neck relaxation, instead of meeting my shoulder rest demand :)

That's the misconception. The violin really shouldn't rest "in the hand". It should be solidly supported by the shoulder and weight of the head. The thumb creates a minimal but necessary counter pressure by a counter-intuitive tug from the skin in an upward direction from the neck. It sounds confusing, but I have many detailed videos on the subject (Left Hand Squeezing) on my website ViolinLab(dot)com.

help guys, I cannot do first finger vibrato very easily, if at all. It is nothing even remotely close to how Blackerby does it. It feels tense and well frankly, isn't bendy or free at all, it's like even if I try to do a motion it gets stopped by some external force I'm not aware of, and it's kind of frustrating.

***** I watched a bit of fiddlerman's videos on vibrato too, I guess I'm putting the cart before the horse and not getting the foundations yet, a big reason why I couldn't do first finger vibrato is because the side of my index finger is actually squeezing the neck. I noticed in this video that the side of her index finger isn't even touching the neck at all! However, I also wanted to ask if vibrato is more of a pull back and release motion? For example, making the finger flat first(pulling it back) and then make it go forward?

If you're doing it horizontally, that may cause your intonation to he off, due to sliding around on the fingerboard. When you do vibrato, your vibrato has to be a tiny bit under the actual note you're playing, which rocking back and fourth, which would still be hitting the intended note. Hopefully that helps a part of your question.

people keep talking about flexibility, while it's really just motor control; learning the pattern will allow for effortless vibrato, it's not like your fingers lack the mobility to move like that.

+Not Legato Stop to thinking, that's plenty kind of the problem. I just realise this right now.
@NotLegato
@NotLegato 8 жыл бұрын
***** the problem isn't thinking, but the fact that your brain hasn't adapted to the movement pattern yet, so your body can't execute the technique effortlessly yet. that's why it takes time to develop a technique that feels smooth and easy to place on any given note.

Great information! But if i dont hug the violin while doing vibrato it dont work.. Am i doing it wrong or do i just need more practice?

Try starting in third position with your entire thumb against the rib (curve) of your instrument. That gets rid of the need to hug the instrument

at around 2:40 or so. Does it help to have a shoulder rest because currently I don't have one and when I try to vibrato without holding the neck like you said was improper, I'm relying on my thumb for the support but it's not enough support. (Hope you understood what I was asking here)

when you dont have a shoulder rest it is like eating without a fork because it will sound very out of tune and it will be very hard to play.

yes it’s one of the most difficult instruments. you have to take many techniques into account. you will sound out of tune for a long time and controlling different techniques will take time. that's why many students give the violin up there are not many violinist. you can play a song after 3 months with a flute, piano and guitar but not with a violin. and vibrato is not something you can learn in the beginning. the beginners disease is tension and you can never manage a vibrato if you have tension but tension vanishes with practice. I don't have the tension anymore that I’ve had in the beginning and I think I can soon start to learn the vibrato. if i will manage, not everyone succeeds. that’s what my private teacher said.

Mustafa arıkan You can maybe go to a music academy and listen to musicians that play the violin for 1 year or 3 years if they don’t mind. The first thing my private teacher said is: with a violin you can’t play a song in 3 months. You can do that with other instruments but not with a violin. It’s better if you hire a violin in the beginning.
