I'm in San Antonio and have been following Nancy since she was 9. She had her debut two weeks ago with the San Antonio Symphony and it was GLORIOUS. This young woman is the future of virtuouso and it is breath taking. Only 17 and what you are hearing now is trash compared to the beauty she creates now.....It will be one of the great pleasure of my life to have witnessed her true first debut. Once in a lifetime!!!!!!!

Both of Nancy's parents are Chinese, and her teacher is her father. I heard her play Lalo at seven and it was very impressive. As for all the comparisons, disparaging or otherwise, with other young violinists, I really doubt that Nancy would care. She plays for the joy of it.

Wonderful! Not just technically perfect, but also heartfelt. I think this is the most mature performance I have seen of this piece by such a young musician. Keep it up girl, you've got it :)

I think the fact that she is 11 years old is what makes her so extraordinary. There aren't too many kids her age playing pieces that difficult or with such emotion. We've been very lucky to find such extraordinary talent for our shows.

It is usual for talented musicians to be good at that age. The mediocer ones never get too good no matter how many years and how much they practice. It is a matter of talent and she's got it.

Excellent technique, especially for her age. This is about four years old; Ms. Zhou is 15 now. She recently won first prize at the Future Stars Competition (which is based in San Antonio). Nancy's father is Long Zhou, who studied with Fredell Lack (I could write several pages about her incredible life if I had a mind to). In addition to being a violinist with the San Antonio Symphony, he teaches privately, with a specialty in the Suzuki Method.

When I was in high school Peter Oundjian (formerly 1st violin of the Tokyo Quartet, now music director of the Toronto Symphony) came to guest conduct the San Antonio Symphony, and did a master class, in which both Nancy and I played. After Nancy (about 6 or 7) finished playing Oundjian explained that he was amazed at her progress and (respectfully) making musical comments would be pointless at such a young age. I'm sure you can guess how the rest of felt having to follow her!

That's quite amazing. I was gonna say that Heifetz plays it better, but then, compare his age in that vid to her age, then one can see why. And no custommeer, I think anyone with even the smallest musical talent or ear or rhythm could play as well after time, it just takes practice, you don't have to be super talented or anything, it just helps. I have to believe in that anyway, or I would enjoy learning the violin a lot less!

This girl is crazy awesome, and all of you losers that think she's way behind for her age need to pick up a violin and back up your words with some notes! Of course there are better players, but that doesn't mean she doesn't rock out loud already. And I don't know what you guys are talking about no emotion.. I'd like to see you play Paganini with contorted faces. I don't think she plays robotic-like at all. Major props to you Nancy, as a fellow violinist from Texas. And I love your outfit :)

No. There doesn't have music, it just has sound. I've watched and listened to some younger talents, they play true music, and if you listen to them, you will know what music means and realize the difference between that girl and true talents. She can play the right tone, but I wonder where's music?

SasukeUchiha2, tamakiviolin, and other critics should post their own videos to show how they think the piece should be played. Then we could have some intelligent discussion. btw, I can't play this piece and I would never put down anyone, of any age, who could play Pagannini this well.

Definitely blows away 90% of the other 11 years olds, but I don't think this is a fair way to assess... Violin playing is about how many years you've been playing, and you can be serious about it at any age. You really get the feeling that she's being forced to play the music, because there is no joy or expression at all. What little vibration she is using seems forced... I just hope she loves playing violin because with playing like this she could get work.

lol no it's actually called a work ethic, any race is capable of doing this - the only natural factor one could cite is perhaps the build of one's body. Yet, even that can be easily adjusted to and overcome. She didn't wake up one day and decide to play this caprice; she worked her ### off for many years to get there. and she did a fine job :D

No shoulder rest? That alone is a feat to me - I can't survive without using at least an extremely thick, soft and fluffy towel! Why's the bit around 1:13 at like 2x faster? A comment on the actual music (finally): the 2nd, 4th and 5th variations should be faster, as should the left hand pizzicato be.

I don't get why people are always posting videos of young, accomplished violinists - with their age attached. As if a 10 year old playing Tchaikovsky's violin concerto is more amazing than Jascha Heifetz playing it. Age is irrelevant, we should be grading by passion. Instead of being the "Violinist - 11 years old," why can't she just be "Violinist" - - ?

@Ironsixx This girl probably has a much more expensive violin. There are different grades of violin depending on your level. So obviously an ammeter would have a different sound than a violin like this. if you want a violin like this prepare to pay. Also the violin cant make up for poor skill for some it might just be their technique thats lacking now the violin.

Sorry, but an actual reading of empirical statistics on these subjects will reveal that most of this is flat wrong. My main contention is with the Juilliard comment, which can be refuted by the "Complete Book of Colleges" published by the Princeton Review. You should reevaluate your falsely held conceptions.
