Join me for a night shift in the ICU and learn what a day in the life of a doctor is like! In this video we'll be discussing a man in his 40s who had a cardiac arrest at home. What caused this cardiac arrest? And why do we cool patients' body temperature after they arrive in the ICU? We'll explore this together and more!

Yeah, that's what I was thinking as well, what she did was awesome! I really hope her husband will recover and they'll be able to pinpoint the cause and manage it nicely in the future. Surely nobody would like to have a heart attack, but if I were her husband, I would be glad it happened when she was around and alert. Good luck to both if they ever stumble upon this video :)

@Coco agreed! My mom made sure to teach my siblings and I first aid, CPR and how to use an AED once we were like 14, 13 and 10. Oh and the heimlech. When I was 16 I used the heimlech on a 9 year old I was babysitting only 3 years later. It should be taught in schools or something. Hard to get a bunch of teenagers to not screw around and listen though.

The fact you took the time to acknowledge the wife's pain... I just know that meant a lot to her. It's sometimes easy to feel like doctors aren't human like us because they see so much every single day. I'm glad you not only have a good head on your shoulders but are also kind and compassionate. At stressful times, that means so much!

It actually makes things harder when everything appears normal while something terrible is happen. It means that you have no basis for a diagnosis or treatment and have to dig a lot deeper to figure out what happened. That often requires time, and with a critical patient like this, it may be hard to find enough time to fully investigate when there are so many decisions that have to be made to stabilize the patient.

As a healthcare worker, I feel for you - being excited about patients with something other than covid. I have been very fortunate that it has been months since I have had a whole patient load of only covid patients. I have them mixed in here and there. I admire your endurance, I was feeling so burnt out and I haven't had a full team of patients with covid in months! Thank you for sharing your joy, passion, and knowledge with us!!

This video hit really close to home. I had the exact situation as the man with the cardiac arrest, but I was 34 at the time. I was in the ICU for 5 days before being moved to the cardiac ward of the hospital. I, thankfully, didn't suffer any neurological damage. The doctors never discovered what caused my heart to stop.

We’re you doing anything before it started? Was the onset very sudden or drawn out over a period of time prior? Do you or anyone in your family have cardiac history? Possibly heart goes into SVT if you are working extremely hard?

@@ashtonduda9971 I don't remember much from that whole week. My wife said I was tired for a few days leading up to it. No one else in the family suffered as far as I know

Me too! I was 42. In the cold coma for 2 days and in the hospital for 7. Do you have a pacemaker or anything? I have a pacemaker/defibrillator and some short term memory issues but that’s it. I have to take notes sometimes now and there are several movies and books I get to experience again for the first time, so that’s cool :) We still don’t know why it stopped but through my detective work I discovered my heart had been stopping and restarting for about 8 months and that time it just didn’t restart 🤷🏼‍♀️

When I was diagnosed with LQTS in 2002 it was considered a zebra and most doctors I saw didn't know what it was. I have actually pointed out the QT interval on an ECG and worked the Bazett formula for them. It wasn't until 2017 that the mutation I have was verified by genetic testing. It is really good to see that it is being recognized now.

I also wanted to share a quick story. When I was in elementary school my principal passed away from a heart attack while riding his bike one day. He was only 42 and had no history himself of any issues that may have pointed towards something like that happening nor any family history. He ate incredibly healthy and exercised regularly. He wasn’t on any medication and refused to take even a Tylenol. But somehow, something got to him and unfortunately it became what I think would be considered a medical mystery because there wasn’t a single thing that should have caused that to happen to him and and they still haven’t been able to find out what caused it. (I’m still hopeful that one day once there’s more technologically and science or whatever else they need they’ll find a reason) The first patient you talked about just reminded me of him and his family and I just wanted to share his story. Who knows, maybe it can help inspire someone to make the technology that will make it so his family would finally have some piece of mind.

You've been helping Covid patients for too long when an ugly bone infection and a cardiac arrest make you "happy" - but I get what you're saying. In Switzerland - where I live - it also feels like things are going back to somewhat normal, and it feels good. As always I am so impressed by your bedside manner. In that case the way you're talking to the wife, asking important question, telling her she did the right thing and showing compassion.

More videos like this please :D It helps me have a clearer picture of what is going on in the hospital setting and the technicalities and application of medicine. Books do not tell you completely what to do in shifts such as this including talking to patients and teamwork.

I just discovered your channel yesterday and am becoming so informed because of them. I have been in Hospital several times since 2015. Diabetes, Heart Disease and COPD mean I'm a frequent flyer. I used to get so frustrated seeing different Doctors and Nurses every few hours. Now I understand why that is and why it's necessary. Thanks So Much.

I have watched a lot of your videos and love them. I went to an outpatient appointment at a hospital ENT and from there to surgery. Spent the next 9 months there. Got to know a lot of folks and walked around a super lot. Observed how things work. I had many great caregivers from surgeons to cleaning crew, food service, nursing, consults, etc. They make a big difference. You look to be among those. Well done!

I’m so glad to hear that the Covid situation seems to be turning a corner up there!! It’s so hopeful to feel like it *is* a light at the end of the tunnel, locally and globally, even if we do still have a ways to go. I also just want to say how much I appreciate getting to listen in on snippets your work night: the compassion you showed the wife of the man who had the arrest, and the anxious Covid patient, maybe particularly her, because I’m the same age, and would be scared to death in the same position. It’s comforting to know, had I been in her shoes, there are people who aren’t only skilled clinicians, but caring, empathetic people too.

A few months ago the same exact thing happened to my father. Sudden cardiac arrest from an arrhythmia that was undiagnosed and he was in the ICU for weeks. He's home now and doing well but this was really helpful to watch.

Arrythmias are so hard to recognize in yourself, especially when you have other health issues, like I have random anxiety attacks, high blood pressure, severe GERD, and I'm on tons of meds for chronic pain so it would be next to impossible for me to tell the symptoms of an arrythmia.

thank you, you have humanised doctors for me it was hard after my father passed to see that they do actually care im currently being treated for something in hospital myself and I had slightly started to see it here but this really hit the nail on the head for me and really gave me the best insight thank you
