Also, people (mostly women) who always wear nail polish tend to have yellowing of the nails, too. If they stop wearing nail polish, healthy nails will eventually grow out. But the lack of exposure to oxygen and light to the nails is thought to cause this discoloration. I met a lady who always wore nail polish. And, then, one day she didn't-- and her nails looked horrible. I rarely wore nail polish again, not even clear. Yuck.

I have a problem with a nail in my foot, after a hit on a soccer game the nail went off, and from then it's like 2 nails grow on my finger, it looks nasty, and the top nail tends to fall off easily. That was like 20 years ago, I was treated for a fungus infection but it didn't solve the issue, I was expecting to see it here.

As a skin cancer survivor, I was instructed by my Derm to keep close eye on my nails as something could be brewing and could catastrophic if not caught early. Her exact words were "If in doubt, get it check out." I still keep close eye in my nails due to this. BTW, 10+ years cancer free!!

@@feliciar.8838 vertical ridges in nails can be a sign of skin cancer under the nail. How Bob Marley died. He had ridges in his toe nails. Died from Malignant Melanoma.

I actually have the first one but it's more my toe nails and it's actually due to one of the things she said which is psoriasis(soon to be tested for a more specific form which is Psoriatic arthritis)

When I worked in a nursing home in my youth, I watched an old doctor examining the nails and fingers of his patients, then write out scripts. I asked the RN how could he know what was wrong with anyone by looking at their fingernails. She informed me that the state of the fingernails could provide insight about the health of an individual.

As a manicurist I’ve seen lots of mail pitting some it damage from artificial nails, some psoriasis & some arthritis. I always suggest clients to see a Dermatologist as soon as I see something strange like really dark marks that’s doesn’t seem to be pigment related or club shaped nails.

I went through breast cancer treatment recently and every time I would have chemotherapy, a dent would appear across my nail. I'd only noticed after I'd had a few treatments and my nails had several dents at that point. After completion of chemotherapy my nails had done something I'd never seen before created a distinct line across my nail and over the next several weeks several nails that had the line LIFTED (and In the middle of the nailbed). They're looking much better today.

Yes! As a Cosmetologist for 40 years, I have seen many of these and sent clients to a Dr for investigation. This is something very important and wide spread knowledge about how to monitor and care for oneself is essential! Maybe you could explain the amazing results of hair analysis!

I have verticle ridges that split and catch on everything even with short nails. I was desperate for sonethibg better than vandaides and went looking for one fake nail but discovered SILK PATCHES at a nail salon. They work like a splint and sre just magic for an issue there is not a medical treatment for besides maybe try more vitamins? I wish more people knew that SILK PATCHES are a "splint for broken nails" bc they help so much!

I was sent for further testing when I had nail pitting and a post surgical meniscus repair that wouldn't heal. I was then diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. So it was a very observant orthopedic doctor that noticed it. It turns out it was already very advanced but I now knew why I had so much pain all the time and changed my primary doctor because I had been complaining of constant pain for years and I felt as if he didn't take it seriously. He did very little testing and just told me it was caused by old sports injuries.

I just wrote a message here about mine because I have that problem too. It started in my 40s and my doctor told me that it was because of my age, as in old age. She was older than me and I didn't realize that 40 was old. I'm 56 now and I have several splits on every nail. They are splitting into all the way down the line and that's from the tip of my nails to the very bottom. It is so bad that I have to keep them cut as short as I can get them and it's getting to the point that I'm going to have to start wearing bandaids over my fingernails. I wish that I knew what was causing it too. If anyone finds out, please let us know.

I have vertical lines across my whole nail beds. The lines grow with the growth of my nails. I can actually feel the ridges in my nails. Plus my nails have always been soft and would bend down with no problem at all. Thank you, Theresa Akins

I think this symptom is associated with thyroid problems, specifically hypothyroidism due to Hashimoto's.

I had colon cancer treatment and 6 months of chemo 16 years ago. All my nails hand and toe became black and slowly regained normal colour and form except one toe nail still remaining black and curved. Worrying and so I will see my GP soon. Thanks your useful talk/mini lecture. God bless.

What would cause vertical indentations or ridges in nails? They're nearly imperceptible but you can feel them and/or see them at the correct angle, looking across the nail in fairly bright light.

Horses get beau lines too! Usually after an abscess or injury to the foot. Sometimes you won't even notice an abscess (horses hide injuries well sometimes, and it may not make them limp) but a few months later there will be a ridge on their hoof!

Love this type of video. You explain it so well and I think everyone should know this information and they can get it checked out sooner then later when its too late. My nails went weird after getting chemo and radiation for colen cancer. I had an operation 3 years ago and thankfully so far I am cancer free. 2 weeks ago my nails finally looked beautiful. I was thrilled. No thickning of the nais, no lines in the nail. They were stronger and not breaking which was brilliant. This morning I looked at my nails and the lines are starting to come back. I just got my CEA results back today 4,9 which cheered me up no end because 3 months ago it had risen to 6,8 for no apparent reason (the only thing that changed was I got my covid vaccinations). Could this have been an infection that I had and thats why my nails changed or my CEA was higher then normal because of an infection? Sorry hope I explained this ok. Thanks for sharing all yr videos. Really enjoy them and I learn so much xxx

Yes, I have them too. They developed in my late 30's. My dad had them in later life. My thumb has one that can develop into a split that can travel down into the quick of the nailbed. So painful and s l o w to grow out. We really need to find out what this is an indicator of. Doc???

I've been watching you for so many years!! My son just saw a rheumatologist last week after seeing numerous doctors for joint issues. He's been diagnosed with Post Streptococcal Reactive arthritis. He'll be taking antibiotics for the next 2 years to treat it. It's from watching your more recent videos in the medical practice that made me decide to insist on a rheumatology referral. I'm so glad I did. He's only 11, so hopefully this will be resolved and not cause him long term problems.

VERTICAL LINES - you covered many nail concerns except mine. For a few years I only had vertical lines on the index finger and thumb, then a few months back it appeared on all of my fingers. Nail polish will not stay on. It just peels off. I have had two hip replacements and two knee replacements. It appeared after the hip replacements. My nails were very thin as well but I started taking B Complex and a multi vitamin and the nails strengthened. Would you please tell me what these are and how to repair the nails?

This was without a doubt, the best and most informative article/video about nail health have ever had the opportunity to view. I want to thank you for doing this video. I’ve been having splinter haemorrhages for a few years now and my doctor just shrugged them off. I was also diagnosed with three pulmonary embolism for which I was treated with blood thinners. I also had blood clots in other parts of my body, I associated all of the blood clots to flying. I’m going to research the condition Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) even more now and have a discussion with my physician about it. I might have to go on aspirin on a daily basis. Thank you so very much!

A big cause of nail deformity such as ingrown, pitting, spoon, is mercury and/or lead toxicity. I’m a foot care nurse so I work with nails all day every day. I always ask about their dental history . 95% people with nail problems got amalgam or had amalgam but those teeth fell off. The other 5 % got own teeth without amalgam, they must got it from their mother….usually their mother got lots of Heath problems and likely got amalgam. Mercury pass from pregnant mother to baby via umbilical cord, not sure by breast milk or not.

This video was so helpful! We often get told in our OSCEs to comment on nail changes and we all just reel off whatever we can think of, but it's so nice to have a proper understanding of what we're looking at! So thank you! Definitely going to pass this video onto our year group :)

Thank you for this video ❤️ Wow, this was really interesting for me, I was originally a Nail Technician and I learnt about 60% of these during my course then, now I work in pharmacy and I'm probably the most knowledgeable in the whole team in anything relating to nails. Now I learnt even more and I can give even better advice, at least on where to refer the patient. 😊

Thank you so much for this explanation! as a hairdresser, I am frequently asked about different nail conditions. I was educated in superficial cosmetic conditions such as white spots and ridges. As always, I simply refer the client to a physician for answers, but it's nice to know in my profession these are important health signs that should not be covered up. Thank you!

When I was younger, the first thing he did was look at my nails, today it is never mentioned why not, obviously today's doctors are not confident enough to diagnose without the web, let's get back to people knowing their job properly.

From what I have read, vertical ridges are usually not clinically significant. They were trying to say not really abnormal. Somewhere else said you need to eat more shellfish. So....?@@cynthiakeller5954

Congrats on making it to PGY5! I would love to see a video that talks about autoimmune inflammatory diseases like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, etc. and the links between the immune response, inflammation, and cancer. I find it both fascinating (and kind of disturbing) how our immune systems go and prevent potential cancers every day, but the same immune system if it is over-active and causing chronic inflammation can cause cancer.

Very interesting video. One thing that never seems to be covered when people talk about nails is something that has happened to me since menopause. I have 2 nails on my right hand that would probably be called spooning, but it isn't. The curvature of the nail flattens out toward the tip of the nail and then the nail does curve downward. If I don't trim, it quite short it will crack on the sides. What is so interesting is that there is another lady in a craft class of 6 women that I attend weekly, who has the exact problem with the same 2 nails, the ring finger and the middle finger. I also have gotten ridges in my nails since menopause. I'm wondering if it has to do with a lack of some vitamin or mineral since as you age you don't absorb nutrients as well as you did when you are younger. This other lady has arthritis, I'm not sure which kind and I have some osteoarthritis and possible fibromyalgia. I wonder if it might be related to that. Just curious and looking for answers to be able to fit it if it is nutritional. I'm glad there are still doctors that look at these outward signs of the body that can tell us so much about what is happening inside.

I had the same problem with the nails on my ring fingers only! It was like the white tips of my nails took a nosedive straight down after the pink part ended. Very strange. It began during the Covid lockdown months, which happened to be a particularly stressful time in my life for other reasons. My thyroid quit during that time. I also have arthritis, degenerative spine issues, asthma, & other medical conditions… My doctor had no idea what could have been causing it. I moved cross-country a year ago, changed to a healthier diet, & lifestyle… and those 2 fingernails are suddenly better now! While I don’t recommend a big move like that, eating better seems to be helping, even if it’s just the fingernails.

I have what looks like ridges the length of my nails. I started taking vitamin B. It is actually smoothing the ridges out.

This video came 5 years too late. 😢 I remember asking my mom when I was a kid why her finger and toe nails looked clubbed and she said she didn’t know. She died 5 years ago from having bad lungs for so long and no doctors caught this. I feel if I would have known about the clubbed nails I could have helped save her.

I love how you share with enthusiasm, I as a hospice LPN had your personality when I was younger, well I still do but I'm on disability. Thyroid, autoimmune... I do mind over matter and I have responsibilities and daily purpose to have the pleasure of sharing life with everyone here. It works most of the time, weather changes are kind of hard. I have nails with a distinctly darker area near the distal end of the nail, similar to the "half and half" nails you've showed here, but I've never had any history of kidney disease and they've been like that as long as I can remember. I've also had beau lines before in two of my toenails, but they were caused by an injury and eventually grew out.

OMG I had/have yellow nail disease! I happened almost overnight. One Sunday afternoon I cut and filed my nails and that Wednesday morning all 20 nails were BRIGHT highlighter yellow. I also have problems with edema/swelling. I was told I was low in vitamin E and eventually it faded away. My doctor acted like I was annoying her to be so concerned.

It's nice to see a doctor paying attention to details as opposed to an md quickly diagnosing and give you a med that you soon find out it doesn't work to give you something else that doesn't work either. But won't do testing to give you proper diagnosis.
