Vipassana Meditation based on Buddhist Teaching called Satipatthana Sutta/ Maha Satipatthana Sutta. Goenka's Method using attention to Vedana nupassana, and Mahasi's Methods using Kaya nupassana. But In Practice Mahasi's methods using all Nupassana as a secondary meditation object. Both is Great for our Mind Development.

Hope you will try to visit it once, its definitely not for beginners. I never found their ways strict but appropriate, it is Free. The environment they provide is nurturing, solitary and intense. Its definitely not for everyone. But i love it, did a 2-10 day courses looking to do more. They also have 30 & 60 day courses..

The more options for all the better. However, Goenka Vipassana 10 day is for the very serious devotee who truly seeks to self-realize.

Goenka is partial Buddha Dhamma. It is always recommended to stay with monks that follow vinaya and if you get a chance to visit monasteries with realised masters. Mostly you will find them in Thailand in the forest tradition. And meditation retreats are new concept, Dhamma is something to take as a life time learning. Or better lifetimes of training and gradually and patiently growing in understanding of Dhamma 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 Taking only Vipassana out from entire teaching will lead you of the road, it is good to get as close as possible to original teaching of the Buddha itself

But meditation retreats are good entry, but we have to move from there on and stay with monks in a monastery outside from meditation retreats when we can see how for example calling vipassana retreat is something that sound very off from what we can find in suttas.

At the Goenka retreat. You only have to be in the main meditation hall afor 3 group sittings that are 1 hour each. and then after a small break for 10 minutes, you go in for more isntructions which last maybe 10-15 minutes. After this you are allowed to meditate in your room. The rest of the time, you can meditate in your room. There are also teachers there that you can ask questions too.

Well, actually vipassana as taught by SN Goenka is not all about the sitting meditation unlike what you said in this video. ON the 8th day for new students and on the 4th day for old students, Goenka Ji instructs the students to be in meditative state for complete 24 hours. We are to be observant of the sensations on our feet when we are walking, we also have to be observant of how our knee feels and how the clothing touches our body, but more importantly, we have to be mindful of our feelings and not be overwhelmed by them (to just watch them like an observer). We have to aim to stay equanimous at all times. These are the instructions given to the students to follow when they are outside the hall or pagoda. But the instructions given to the students about when they lay down to sleep are different, instead of focusing on a specific body part or going part by part through out the whole body, the students are instructed to not strain themselves and sort of give in, in such a way that they can focus on whatever sensation arises and whatever sensation their mind tries to focus upon. But at the same time not trying to fight sleep and also staying equanimous at all times.

@@IKIYOGA No, actually I've been to vipassana 10 days course only thrice as a student and only once as a volunteer/sewak. But I know that almost everyone tends to skip this part as it is not that much emphasized upon, even the instructions are given only once and never again(old students are instructed on day 1 to start this from day 4, new students are instructed on day 7 to start this from day 8. He also says that these instructions are for very serious students, serious about meditation). Also even assistant teachers never ask about this in their regular questioning sessions (in questioning sessions, assistant teachers call students in groups to sit near him/her and then they ask questions like 'are you getting sufficient sleep' or 'were you able to follow today's instructions' etc and they also meditate together for 5-10 minutes). But in advanced courses like 7 day satipattana suta course and 20 days, 30 days etc these instructions are very very much emphasized upon.... Please search on youtube 'vipassana day 7' and watch from 2:12 till 10:33 (link - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q5qkqq2FlrjKmYE.html) here he gives these instructions to 10 day students. I just noticed that what he says in hindi is quite different than what he says in English and it has less feelings behind it (maybe because english isn't his first language) and also the instructions are more detailed and clear in hindi. but never the less, the essence or gist is similar/same.

If you are really want to gain something or develop from your heart that means go to Goenka vipassana. It is no escape place. You will established the technique on you so that you can carry on rest of your life. It is for for those who really want to meditate. Thank you for sharing your experiences which might help others. It is the same thing but the difference is how seriously you wanted. Nice to know there are places where people can go. Thank you again

Thank you! yes, these two vipassanas are just based on 2 different types of meditation. That’s all. This doesn’t mean one is good and another is bad. It’s just different. Actually, I went to a Thai Forest monastery two days ago and I discovered another way of meditation they practice there, that is like a mix of Goenka and Mahasi Sayadaw teachings. Unfortunately, currently they don’t have a teacher, so I couldn’t learn much. I don’t claim I am an expert in Vipassana, I am just very curious to learn about it and share everything that I discover.

@@IKIYOGAi became monk at the meditation center founded by Ven. Mahasi Sayadaw in Yangon. It is customary for men in Asia to become monk for a few months. So, I spent my time there. I would say the most comprehensive teachings on Vipassana is with Sayadaw Pa Auk. But most lay people can't do it. It takes years of practice. The "mahasi" tradition is the most widely used throughout Thailand. It's the one they use even at Mahachulalongkorn University, the Buddhist University in Thailand. So, Thai practice is usually "Mahasi" based. The founding meditation master at Doi Suthep did in fact study with Mahasi Sayadaw. But the practice they have is also integrated the Northern Thai style. I did 3 sittings with Goenka. For me, it's the most recommended for lay people. The Mahasi and orher traditions require study of Buddhist scriptures which for many lay people may take a long time. At any rate, all these teachings are not contradictory. It's just that different people have different temperament and different capability. As lay people, we don't have whole day reading scriptures and meditating, so we have approaches like Goenka, which is more user-friendly.

You really should do a Goenka course. It's not as strict as you point out. You are not observed all the time. You are free to meditate in your room if you prefer. You are only required to be in the hall for 3 sessions a day as well as at the discourse each evening. The separation of male and female is a good idea in my opinion. And of course if you really want or need to leave, then you can leave. Also anything less than 10 days, isn't really giving a proper chance to experience the method. Blessings from Australia. 🙏

The Goenka practice doesn't speak about Buddhism, actually it more or less rejects the concept of Buddhism. The teachings are about the Buddha himself. You are told to pay attention to the sensations at all times. I've done 8 Goenka retreats and I highly recommend it. It's not easy but it's amazing

I find it funny when participants ignorantly think goenka doesn’t speak about buddhism. I used to think the same before. It’s understandable because majority of participants are coming from other backgrounds and never do a research. He tries to get a gesture of having nothing in common with buddhism because he knows majority of their participants are either agnostic or atheist westerners and they hate religions. He knows his audience… Literally every term and topic that Goenka says during those 10days videos are buddhist concepts. Moreover, have you ever thought of knowing the meaning of all those chantings? He is sending respect towards spirits and deities of all directions in buddhist spiritual planes.. There is more to say, but I just wanted to give a clue. With meta

I did this video based on the experience of 2 close friends of mine: one did a Goenka vipasaana in Spain and he said it was a great experience yet he would not do it again; and another one did it twice: once in Germany, and another time in Switzerland and she will go again and again. They both told me it was hard and not for everyone, and also they provided me with details I shared. Anyways, yes Goenka is on my list. But tomorrow I’m going to do Mahasi Sayadaw Vipassana again as I am in Thailand and I want to hear teachings from a buddhist monk.

@@IKIYOGA I’ve never done a Mahasi course but I know they practice differently so when you sit a Goenkagyi course make sure you don’t mix the techniques it’s very important to keep them separate partly because of respect to the 2 different teachers but you don’t want to get confused on the course and not understand the benefits each has to offer. Mahasi used noting to concentrate the mind and in doing so uses the conscious mind, like hearing hearing or thinking thinking these are products of the conscious mind, whereas Goenkagyi uses the breath with is connected to the conscious and subconscious mind, so straight away you are working with the subconscious mind, so it’s very important to follow Goenkagyis instruction to the letter and go as deep as possible.. All the best wishes to you

@@damianv8200 some misinformation here. I never had the whole hidden emotional baggage of my subconscious come to surface and revealed to me better than the times I joined mahasi style retreats. I have heard the similar results from some of my friends whom joined also. Nevertheless, I had some good results from goenka retreats as well which I used to do in the past. Both traditions are fine. It is a matter of taste and preference.
