No way! I grew up near Chicago so that was always against the local law. I've even been places where they wouldn't allow ketchup in the building. I still love my dogs Chicago style, but if you have a different taste, more power to you, especially if it keeps you making great content.

One quick idea I just had for you (ignore if not useful) would be to have "country meals" where you make a full meal with the most typical dishes and what people usually serve besides it. So, for example, what would be the most typical japanese meal you'd serve if you were getting guests, or maybe if you were in Brazil (in Brazil you might choose feijoada with farofa, vinagrete, rice, fries etc). Then you can serve all that food to your family (privately, of course) later on. They might even give you scores for you to share with us later. 🙂@@emmymade

Fun thing to try is for the last cut flip the dog over so the cut is on the opposite side of the dog, then once it is cooked you can slip the first segment into the backwards slit. Helps keep the ring shape! I make the first cut closer to the end so it is thinner and fits in better.

Here in the United Kingdom back in the 1960-1990’s our most common chain of burger stores were called Wimpy Burger (not sure of the actual dates) and amongst the other mainly circular dishes that were served were these hotdog based dishes which could be served other dishes as a stack, but the very basic version was called a Wimpy Bender and was just a hotdog sliced in the same style as your but with a half of a tomato in the middle and grilled both sides then served in a simple round bun. It was my experience that the choice of accompanying fare could include very nearly anything from the standard Wimpy menu from a simple burger with or without a slice of processed cheese, to a fillet o’ fish or a fried egg. In some of the larger Wimpy restaurants you could on occasion even have a small steak medallion with the same hotdog ring laid on top and served with English style chips and garden peas, with a half tomato and a small salad. Whatever you wanted it was cut into a circle that would fit on the bread bun apart from the chips and the condiments were always on the table in giant red or brown plastic tomatoes.

When I worked at a diner, we made a version of the Curly Dog. We would slice them the same way, but put two hot dogs onto the bun and put mustard relish on it (the two fitting into each other, one end of each hot dog fitting at the center of the other… like a “c” shape and a backwards “c” shape pushed together… hard to explain with words 😂🤷‍♀️).

My mom worked at a diner in Georgia in the 1950s and she learned how to make this there. But the way she made it was by slicing it the same as Emmy did but then laying it on a baking sheet in a circle and putting a toothpick in the two ends to hold it together. Then placing American cheese on it so it melts in between the slices. We would eat this for breakfast when I was a kid. I didn't even know hotdogs could be cooked any way except in the oven until I was at least 25! Lol

We grew up on hot dogs cut that way before cooking (slice down the length then horizontal slices about every half inch). They curled up, but we always straightened them, even when we ate them on bread rather than on a hot dog bun. I don't know where my mother picked up this way of cooking hot dogs, but it was the only way I knew to cook them until I got older. But I love the idea of eating them curled -- I'm a mustard on hot dogs, everything on a hamburger person.

veggie egg roll with a generous amount of eggs in the filling: Ingredients: For the filling: - 4 large eggs - 2 tablespoons vegetable oil - 1 cup thinly sliced cabbage - 1/2 cup thinly sliced bell peppers (any color) - 1/2 cup thinly sliced carrots - 1/2 cup thinly sliced mushrooms - 1/2 cup thinly sliced scallions (green onions) - 2 cloves garlic, minced - 1 teaspoon grated ginger - 2 tablespoons soy sauce - 1 teaspoon sesame oil - Salt and pepper to taste For the egg rolls: - 8 egg roll wrappers - 1 egg (beaten, for sealing the wrappers) - Vegetable oil for frying Instructions: 1. Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. 2. Add the garlic and ginger, and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant. 3. Add the sliced vegetables (cabbage, bell peppers, carrots, mushrooms, scallions) to the skillet. Stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until they begin to soften. 4. Push the vegetables to one side of the skillet and crack the eggs into the other side. Scramble the eggs and cook until they're fully cooked but still slightly runny. 5. Mix the scrambled eggs with the sautéed vegetables in the skillet. 6. Add soy sauce and sesame oil to the filling mixture. Stir well to combine. Season with salt and pepper to taste. 7. Take an egg roll wrapper and place it in a diamond shape with one corner pointing towards you. Place a generous spoonful of the egg and vegetable filling in the center. 8. Fold the bottom corner over the filling, then fold in the sides. Brush the top corner with beaten egg and roll up the egg roll, sealing it shut. 9. Repeat the process with the remaining wrappers and filling. 10. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan or wok to 350°F (175°C). 11. Carefully place the egg rolls in the hot oil and fry until they are golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side. 12. Remove the egg rolls from the oil and drain on paper towels. 13. Serve your veggie egg rolls hot with your favorite dipping sauce, such as sweet and sour sauce or soy sauce with chopped scallions. Enjoy your homemade veggie egg rolls with plenty of eggs in the filling!

I like ketchup on hot dogs, too. But then again, I like ketchup on a LOT of stuff. My father - born and raised in Georgia - used to tell me that my love of ketchup is proof that I'm part Yankee - my mom was born and raised in New York - but she didn't really like ketchup all that much. For me, I eat hot dogs with mustard, mayonnaise, and ketchup. I put the mustard and mayo in the hot dog bun first, close the bun so they blend together, put the dog in the bun, and then add the ketchup directly on the dog. When my family used to go to the drive-in movies, my mom would make up a bunch of munchies to take with us (the concession stand's food cost way too much). The main munchie was hot dogs. She'd cook up the dogs, ask us how we wanted them, prep everyone their own dogs, wrap them in aluminum foil, and write our names on the foil with a magic marker. By the time it came time to eat the dogs during the movie, the flavors had combined to perfection. Nowadays when I make hot dogs to eat in buns, I still have them with mustard, mayo, and ketchup. The dogs I don't eat I make up as above, wrap in aluminum foil, and put in the refrigerator to take to work for lunch the next day. I don't bother putting them in the fridge at work when I get there, choosing instead to let them slowly warm up to room temperature. Yummy I'll also sometimes add a line or two of squirt canned cheese (from the cracker aisle) to my dogs.

in Sweden (well at least in the north) we have "Parisare" huge slice of sausage (70g-200g burger size ) onion (raw or toasted) custard, ketchup and chopped sweet pickle, served in burger bun. No lettuce or cheese on those. So hotdogs has already been turned into a burger, think it was done in the 80s... As told to me by an older coworker, it stared by a local hotdog seller slicing "falukorv -" latterly" and selling with great success then asking the local "slaughterhouse" to make a wider version of the sausage "Scan Umeä" did and the "parisare" was" born... don't know if this is the true origin but... Scan does sell Parisare sausages though, still. The local slaughterhouse is now closed and a school of all things is in its place. Not sure if the Alf attack was the reason, but it happened.

Perhaps even before Jacqus Pépin, a fast food chain in the UK called Wimpy was selling the 'Bendy & Cheese' which uses a similar sausage ^^;

hate to age myself. in 1960 my Aunt worked at Howard Johnsons. in the late 60's we would eat there once in a while. I loved the curly dogs. Now that I am a Grandfather i make them for my grandchildren. They love them.

I wish Emmy would have emphasized that even though she preferred the larger one, there is nothing wrong with the smaller hot dog.

that center part is perfect for some chili, onions and cheese. although, i really have to ask - what the blankity-blank is that yellow stuff? need some emeril lagasse's kicked-up horseradish mustard!

The one with the slice down the center looks tastier.

At a burger drive-in here in WA (Burgermaster), their "hot dog" is 2 split grilled franks criss-crossed on a burger bun

I think the center needs to be filled with sauerkraut!

I never quite understood what they were, but this reminds me of on The Cosby Show when Heathcliff would incentivize Theo to do his homework or celebrate something by making “bacon burger-dogs”

It's funny that it's 'viral' because I learned how to do this in HomeEc in junior high in the 70's.

Another idea for the empty space in the middle of the bun is to place a meatball in there

You should cut off one of the ends and stick it in the middle. That way there isn't a big empty hole in the middle.

I'm a purist when it comes to hamburgers. I feel like onions should always go on a hamburger and I can't help but notice the big gap that this burgerdog leaves in the center. I would have to fill it with something, and I can't think of anything better to fill that cavity up with than some caramelized diced onions. Yum yum
