Virgil Akins - Was an American boxer who won the Welterweight Championship of the World in 1958. Nicknamed ‘Honeybear', Akins was the first World Champion boxer from St. Louis. Akins was considered lanky, but proved nevertheless to be a powerful hitter with either hand and quickly developed a reputation as a dangerous puncher. An elimination tournament for the Welterweight title was created when Carmen Basilio vacated his crown to move up to Middleweight, six of the World's top-rated Welterweights was swiftly established in an effort to find Basilio's successor. Akins emerged the victor and new World Champion on June 6, 1958, by pounding favorite Vince Martinez to a fourth round destruction. All told, Martinez went down nine times, having never seriously recovered from a shattering right delivered early in the First.

One of the best Lightweights and Welterweights of the 1950's! Sadly as time has gone on Virgil Akins has become somewhat forgotten through the years but he was an excellent fighter with devastating power in either hand. He won his world Welterweight title with a 9 knockdown destruction of Vince Martinez, Akins also beat the likes of; Joe Brown, Tony DeMarco and Isaac Logart among many other top contenders of his time. My old trainer Charles Sawyer beat Virgil Akins by decision I believe. I’m not sure if he beat him before he became champ or after, but I used to sit for hours listening to him tell stories. That was boxing 101 right there!

The fight against Demarco showed how great Akins chin was too. When Demarco hits people flush, they go to bed. Akins withstood multiple power combos and came back in a thunderous fashion. One of my fav fights from the old era. The 6 punch combo that put DeMarco down for good was so satisfying.

Unexpected video. Watched some of his in the past, can't quite remember which ones, but he's just like many fighters doing the 50s and 60s are forgotten in a highly stacked era.

I'd recommend checking out the Welterweight era of the 50's and 60's and then looking up the footage of the fighters that you're interested in. You could take a look at forum posts or the list of champs here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_world_welterweight_boxing_champions
