I personally think fixed line will always have it's place, as no wireless connection can ever be 100% consistent, 100% of the time or deliver ultra low latency like a wired fibre connection can 👍

Yup, the best broadband ever - before the oversubscription of service. The latency was so sweet .... It all went downhill since then. I physically cut the crappy fibre to my house approximately 10 years ago and am content with the VDSL2 service I'm currently getting - The latency is much better than VM will ever have

If you want the fastest speeds, you need preferably a desktop with either a gigabit ethernet port and/or WIFI-6E wireless card with the Hub 4 in modem mode connected to a WIFI-6/WIFI-6E compliant third party router.
@dazaman192 жыл бұрын
You still wont get the full 1Gb speeds as the HUB 4 only has 1 gig ports. You would need a 2.5 gig port and be wired to get the full speed they claim which is 1130mbps. So they are intentionally bottlenecking its customers by the inferior hardware they are providing, therefore you will never get the full 1130mbps on a HUB4. Only the new HUB 5 will be able to handle these speeds.
@JynxedKoma2 жыл бұрын
@@dazaman19 Using my Asus gt-ax11000 with it's 2.5 Gig port from the modem mode Hub 4.0, I frequently get 900mb's over wifi, so the very minor loss of half a hundred mb is perfectly acceptable in my eyes... But yeah, will wait until the HUB 5 gets out of it's trials and becomes more 'mainstream' for consumers.
@dazaman192 жыл бұрын
@@JynxedKoma Yeah they should not be claiming '1130mbps' when the actual Hub 4 cannot attain those speeds. You can do a workaround with balance rr and use 2 ports on the HUB4 to boost a connection to the 1 gig speeds, however as the Hub4 does not support LACP-IEEE 802.3ad you need to buy additonal hardware which no one should have to do and about 99% of the customer base has no clue about.

5 GHZ WiFi max speed is 1300 mbit, but both device need to be on AC with a clean channel without interference, so If you only have N devices you not going to get max speed. I have been using 2 satellite routers for the last 10 years to boost our WiFi coverage, the latest from 3 years ago Netgear Nighthawk R8000 & R7800, both auto configured when I connected the to the network. I have cat5e cable runs & 3x 8 port Gigabit switches for older cable only devices.

I would have expected you to get a better ping than 18-21ms.
@starmole50002 жыл бұрын
The average ping will drop when virgin upgrade the upstream channels to DOCSIS 3.1. At the moment they have only upgraded the downstream channels which is why it's so asymetric. Will be a fairly decent upgrade to pings when they do - not so much a significant drop in ping time but definitely more stable. This is because active queue management (AQM) on DOCSIS 3.1 will prevent bufferbloat. In addition they will have way more upstream capacity to use if they want e.g. the 1 gig service will likely be boosted at least to 100mb upload.
@VanillaVictini2 жыл бұрын
@@starmole5000 I got VM's 500 package on September 1st and when I do speedtests, I get 7-8ms ping. Mine appears to be FTTP RFoG due to the large Omnibox on my wall as well as the fact that the white box in my bedroom has to be plugged into a socket. That might be why. I put my Hub 4 into Modem Mode and had a check and it says I am on DOCSIS 3.1.
@starmole50002 жыл бұрын
@@VanillaVictini super stuff! Yes your downstream will very likely be DOCSIS 3.1! That means at a maximum VM will be able to offer you about 6gb/s! What does it say on your upstream channels? I imagine it says 3.0 but curious. The next upgrade for you will be coming when they switch over those upstream channels to 3.1 and then you should see same minimum ping but the ping will be much more stable (it should basically hardly ever go above 100ms, and for the most part stay low even when lots of users in the local area are downloading/uploading). Bear in mind there is no 'correct' ping to have - it depends on how far away/how many connection points you are from the server you're pinging. The stability in gaming etc. comes from the stability of that ping and a certain proportion of that stability is determined by the network between your house and VMs 'head end' (equivalent to the exchange in BT world I think). Because you're on FTTP there's essentially no connection points between you and the head end. But then the way the head end deals with packets up and down becomes more important and that's what the 3.0 to 3.1 upgrade will improve for you! That improvement should already be there downstream - I'd be interested to know for example whether if you do a large download from a server that can supply you with 500mbit+, does it impact your voice chat for example? It definitely does on mine - but 3.1 should help to resolve this because the modem can tell the head end that downstream traffic is getting a bit too much and so the head end will back off a bit to let the modem breathe again. At least that is my understanding of how AQM works! If VM ever go to DOCSIS 4.0 that will come with LLD - "low latency DOCSIS" and that would come with a really significant drop in pings and even more stability! Look it up it's really cool tech. It would provide pings from premises to the head end of less than 1ms even under load! Don't think that's going to be on the cards though - think they're gonna switch to XGS-PON which is fine by me! That's the thing most ppl don't appreciate really, truth is fibre in itself doesn't mean an excellent quality connection, it's the underlying network protocols and how they manage the traffic coming in/out that makes the difference.
@VanillaVictini2 жыл бұрын
@@starmole5000 I'll have to check my Hub 4 upstream channels tomorrow since I've gotta use a wired connection to check it in modem mode, and that's assuming I remember. But you are correct that the downstream is DOCSIS 3.1, because I remember seeing it. My connection's been solid thus far.
@starmole50002 жыл бұрын
@@VanillaVictini no worries. Enjoy that 3.1 goodness! I find that accessing the modem admin page is terribly hit and miss on the hub 3 I've got. Like 90% of the time it will just time out, other times it's fine. Not the best piece of kit by any means but at least it gets the job done in modem mode.
