Over the last 40 years there have been many steam locomotives restored, but also several recreated. Virginia and Truckee #1, "the Lyon" is one of the locomotives being brought back from the dead.
For 40 years Stan Gentry of Clear Lake, Iowa, has been building a full-sized replica of the Lyon with the plan that it would be given to the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City.
The locomotive was being assembled in the shops of the Mason City & Clear Lake Electric Railroad Historical Society, Inc where Gentry is president. The components of the locomotive were being built by dozens of suppliers and volunteers.
The “Lyon” and its sister engine the "Ormsby" were the first two locomotives constructed for the Virginia & Truckee Railroad in 1869 - V&T No. 1 and No. 2 by H. J. Booth Locomotive - Union Iron Works in San Francisco. The locomotives were built using inferior pre-1869 technology and never performed well. Moreover the iron found on the west coast at the time was of very poor quality. It was brought in by ship from the Great Lakes after sailing all the way around South America. They were delivered by ox-team in pieces by wagon to Carson City and assembled near the site of the V and T shops which were under construction. Whatever the problems, these Booth locomotives were never up to the job at hand.
By 1879 they were totally obsolete and the newer and more powerful V&T locomotives were the only locomotives being used, and the first locomotives were left rusting outside the shops in Carson City before being scrapped by the late 1890s.
NOW, all that said, the locomotives were (and are) fascinating as examples of locomotives that time traveled from 1840 or so to the Virginia and Truckee railroad in 1869.
Enter Stan Gentry. And his massive "screwing around" plan to recreate the Lyon in the traction shops in Clear Lake. 40 years later he donated the locomotive to the Nevada State Railroad Museum who are finishing the project with donated funds and time.
We also take a look at the wonderful 1/2" scale models of the Virginia and Truckee by George Richardson who built these metal models in the 1960's

Listen. It’s got nothing to do with Democrats or Republicans. Things get torn down because non-partisan municipalities are desperate to get business into historic areas to compete with private malls and shopping centers. So they often just let developers do what they want, which means bulldozing everything without so much as an archaeological survey. It’s pragmatic, but also politically arrogant.

When you asked Stan Gentry why he decided to build a recreation of a steam locomotive, his answer partially describes me. 6:13 🤣 I just don't have the money to undertake such a project. It's great seeing the Inyo #22 and the McKeen car again, also #22. 12:25 and 12:56 👍 Two astounding beauties! And like I've said in one of your earlier videos that these two engines appeared in, #22 is my favorite baseball jersey number. 😊 Great to see those two engines again. I LOVE your Great Steam Up videos. Keep 'em comin'!

Hi again! Yup he was sorta taken aback when I asked that. I guess he’s really gotten deeper into this than he ever thought he would. Now at about 80 and all his time and money sitting there on the track.. it’s great the Nevada State Railroad Museum is going to finish it.

Another amazing video of the V&T RR. I loved how Stan Gentry had recreated the Lyon. I'd love to see it when it is complete. I still can't choose a favorite locomotive out of all the units that have been shown, they're all so beautiful and nostalgic. In fact, I find it extremely pleasing that there are still people out there who are willing to rebuild a part of history, even more rare to recreate history through stories and demonstrations, given that people these days are all about the modern times and technology. Yes, I include the Toy Man channel in this tribute because of you two, Dale and Karyn, for bringing us a piece of history each and every week. I was so into watching the video that when your customary subscribe to the channel request had came up I was like "did I just finish watching the whole video in like two minutes?" It's amazing how fast that a 14 minute video flies by when my attention is committed 100%. I don't even remember drinking my coffee during the video, but my mug is almost gone. As always, you two can put on a hell of a good show. Thank you for going places and showing us what's out there. Take care. Until next time...

I don’t build models as much as I use to. But, when I was a kid my dad would help with models I wanted to build. He was in grade school in the mid 1960’s so was in that 20% as you mentioned. Also his home state is Massachusetts, so winters are brutal up there period, and when it’s stupid cold out I would rather be building models after a day of sledding or skiing, especially since it gets dark out quickly up there. I digress. Anyway that’s something I still enjoy doing and always will. Whether is HO scale building, aircraft, tanks, model cars etc. to me it’s fun and always will, but hats something we can relate too.

By the way the James is the bowker. The legend has it is the V&T named the engines after thier employees. So they named the James after one of their mechanics. Well that mechanic one day showed up drunk and got fired. So the locomotive was re named after JW bowker.

It amazing to see these proud engines being restored and live like seeing something from history coming to life. I often wonder if the engines could be converted to run on eco-friendly fuel, thinking of the idea from how the Grand Canyon Railway did the same with their steam engine (GCR 4960) running on waste vegetable oil
@wayneantoniazzi2706
@wayneantoniazzi2706 2 жыл бұрын
Probably if need be. That's the thing about steam engines, as long as you've got something to burn in the firebox to boil water you've got power. And any kind of waste oil will do.
@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision 2 жыл бұрын
Yup. It’s all just costs. Many of the coal locomotives are being converted to oil. Mostly because of the cost to transport coal. Power plants are converting to natural gas. Sure EPA but it’s also cheaper now that they’ve done it. A pipe is cheaper than a railroad with a 100 car coal drag. Anyway sure! Any oil fired locomotive can run on anything that flows through a pipe and burns.

@@ToyManTelevision Back in the 1970's the Morris County Central steam trains in New Jersey burned waste oil they'd get free from local gas stations and auto repair shops, those places were grateful to have someone take it off their hands! One thing to remember, steam locomotives are exempt from EPA smoke regulations so they can burn anything they want. Stationary steam engines, no.

not going to happen. Doing so is extremely silly for environmental reasons. These steam locomotives run at most a few times a year and produce far less than a days worth of car traffic.

Awesome video. It's hard to believe that you recorded all of that during the first days of July. The story about Clearlake Iowa is that first they don't have a trolley service today though they may have had one in the past. They do have a trolley park where the Lyon was built and storied. I vaguely caught a story about some vandalism to the park . They wouldn't tell me the whole story without a subscription. I won't sub to my own hometown newspaper what makes them I want to subscribe to theirs?

Dale: Steam locomotives are fired heat exchangers on wheels. In fact as I have pointed out as industry changed in America the locomotive manufacturers morphed into other industries. I believe this is a part of America that should not be allowed to die. Loved this video for different reason that I have enjoyed your other videos.

Hi Ken! Yup. The new world is quite different. A ford is designed in Southern California and prototyped in Detroit. Then parts from 10 countries are assembled in Tennessee. More are assembled in Germany. And some in China. Half of the F150’s are built and sold in China. But the parts come from everywhere. And the company is still Ford from Dearborn. It’s just the new world.

Hi. Well they just finished the throttle. And are working on springs. The back head it the big thing. Nothing done there yet. No fire door. No pipes. Nothing. Now with the throttle made they can install that in the steam dome and add the throttle linkage to the back head. Anyway as I’m looking it seems that’s where the bulk of the work is needed.

Cumbres and toltec. Really hard to pull off. They could get about 20 miles out of Chama before running into a missing bridge. The huge problem comes at Durango. The old grade is a highway for miles. And as you enter town its all built up on the grade.
