Hikers familiar with the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest might notice that the first day of (southbound) hiking in this video is south of the second day. We wanted to avoid the lower elevation section the day after a noreaster came through.
We hiked first from Punch Bowl Mountain Overlook to Rt 501. The second day was Rt 60 to Punch Bowl Mountain Overlook.
The second day took us through the Historic ruins along Brown Mountain Creek. It's an interesting area once occupied by former slave families. There is an oral history interview of a one-time resident Taft Hughes at nbatc.org/1992Interview.
Winter hiking has the advantage of seeing the surrounding mountains' contours through the trees. The green tunnel sky opens and the sunshine touches the trail at an angle. There is less daylight, but the cooler temperatures make for comfortable hiking.
