We usher in the 2021 Adelaide Festival with two renowned artists in their respective disciplines. Godwin Bradbeer presents 'The Fragile', his latest body of works on paper, and we celebrate Inge King's (1915 - 2016) profound career as a sculptor, showcasing 'Selected Works' from her estate.
'The Fragile' by GODWIN BRADBEER
'In September of 2014 I found myself yet again drawing a figure of a man in a state of fall, or in this unfolding, a state of sprawl. Descending or ascending, in abandon or in anguish, this subject had for me a primal aspect. In my drawing there has been a recent innovation, both a modesty and a liberation. I allow my figures now, occasionally, to retain some garments, usually a dishevelled suit, the trousers and jacket, barefooted like Paul McCartney on the Abbey Road pedestrian crossing or a startled Saint Paul spreadeagled on the Damascus road'. 'Selected Works' by INGE KING (1915 - 2016)
BMGART is privileged to present an exciting body of sculpture by Inge King to celebrate the 2021 Adelaide Festival. Inge King, commands a distinguished place in Australian art. As one of our most significant sculptors her work can be seen in many civic spaces, inviting interaction with the public, while responding to the surrounding environment. As an early female pioneer in what was essentially a male-dominated art form, she has been an inspiration for generations of younger artists and sculptors. Although she was trained in the classical tradition in wood and stone, King embraced modernism before she came to Australia. Experimenting with abstract forms, welded steel became her favoured medium as she responded to the “untidy” Australian landscape. Her work evolved from roughly welded, painted steel (1960s) to large-scale, monumental structures in public spaces. In the last decades of her career highly polished celestial forms reflected a newfound freedom and joy. As her work became known, she enjoyed an increasing range of public and private commissions, both in Australia and overseas.
