The Grave Concerns Association is a volunteer organization dedicated to the restoration of the historic Western State Hospital Cemetery located on the grounds of Fort Steilacoom Park. Their organization grew from John Lucas's desire to rededicate the prairie cemetery where over 3,000 former patients were buried, but few markers were visible in 2000. Through an incredible journey that lead to the changing of laws to allow for individuals buried in the cemetery to no longer remain anonymous Grave Concerns has brought dignity and peace to over 3000 souls. Join us as we explore the story of this cemetery from its founding with Western State to today. We will cover some of the stories of those who were buried there as well as delve into all that Grave Concerns has done.
This is a FREE virtual presentation and will be live broadcast.

Great video! I was looking for the history of Western State Hospital, where my 3rd great grandmother died. I hadn’t found out where she was buried and now thanks to Grave Concerns I have found her! Nancy Huhn died 10 years after her husband, a Civil War Union Vet died. Thank you so much!

Thank you for helping those troubled folks rest in peace... I've seen them when the ruins used to still be there floating around all ghosting like ..

I used to work here as security. There are underground tunnels too, that took the soldiers to the water, in case the Indians attacked years ago.

At Ft Steilacoom? I thought it was only Northern and Eastern State that had tunnels. Well other than the one that ran beneath Steilacoom BLVD. Any ghost stories? After the Army I worked as a security guard in Austin TX for St David’s Hospital in Downtown Austin next to the University of TX Austin campus next to the State capital so I know the security thing. Just curious

@myleftnut3934 Yes the tunnels are at Ft. Steilacoom. Still there. They were made originally to go towards the water (puget sound). to escape an Indian attack.

If you want to know something interesting about the Vulcanology of the state. The hotspot that causes Yellowstone is the reason why certain parts of Easter Washington has such Gold deposits. I think a Wazzu professor made that connection followed from the coast as it moved to or should I say tectonic plate moves making its location now In Wyoming. Not surprising seeing as Great Britain, Scotland and Wales and Ireland were all part of North America at one time.

The Willard Sanatorium in New York State. Women could be locked up for grieving over the death of a child at the mother could not get over the loss in 3 days. She would be locked up. Men coming back from the war and had Shell Shock could be locked up. Men that were homeless and what was considered indigent. They had a large room that was walled off at Willard Sanatorium and here stored lots of patients properly. What a sad place.

In my ancestry research, I found a 4th cousin who died there and his death certificate says he's buried there. His name was Alfred Newsom. It says he died from burns. (1946 if I remember correctly)

She was arrested for sleeping naked and her mother insisted she needed to be institutionalized instead of imprisoned. Francis was in and out of the hospital before winning back her own guardianship and passing away from cancer later in life. We have a whole tour about her.
