Nancy, your explanation of the Columbia visa schemes was the best I’ve heard. Thank you so much for your clarity and assistance.

Anyone who spends more than 183 days in Colombia is classified as as a tax resident. Colombia taxes worldwide income including capital gains and dividends. If you own investments outside of Colombia you are required to report them. So in Colombia residency may end up costing much more than you expect. Getting the visa is easy and should not be the focus of your research if you plan on relocating there. Taxation is Colombia is very punitive and the reason many choose other more accommodating domiciles.

This is news to me. I have seen several sources that mention the US and Eritea as the only countries that tax worldwide income. I will do more research.

Very good point David, People who moves to Colombia forget about taxes. Colombia and the USA, charges worldwide income but Colombia is more punitive than the USA since they do not have any exceptions. I would not retire to Colombia for more than 183 days per year. In the other side, Ecuador and Panama have a good program for retiree expats. They have discount rates in water and electricity and they do not have to declare any income outside the county. Colombia and the USA need to update their requirements to modern times.

The most significant FINANCIAL factor in obtaining the M-11 visa (retired) is a vaguely/unstipulated by Migracon on the website, of health insurance requirements. This insurance MONTHLY premium can easily range from $400(US) per month to $2,000(US) per month...depending face value/coverage of the policy. As an experienced hand with Colombian visas, can you shed some light on "policy coverage" requirements in obtaining a visa?

A key question I don't see answered: If you leave the country before staying 180 days, how long do you have to be away to stay again just using your passport for another 180 days? Or is this allowed?

Thank you so much Nancy!! Your video was so informative and really cleared up many questions up. Will you be creating a Residency to Citizenship Video or content on if it's even possible to obtain Citizenship? While I understand residency is easy to maintain if I want to live there long term I would feel much more comfortable having citizenship and so many others have conflicting information - Columbia is at the top of my list and I'm currently a US Citizen. Thank you so much in advance!!!

Residency and citizenship are two different things. You will become a resident (either temporary or permanent) depending on which visa you get. You can begin the citizenship process after you have been a permanent resident for 5 years. If you are under age 65 you will be required to take an exam (in Spanish) about the history and laws of Colombia. If you are older than 65, that requirement is waived. I have a resident visa and do not plan to apply for citizenship. You are allowed to hold both a U.S. passport and a Colombian passport at the same time.

I was born in Colombia and moved to the US with my parents at the age of three. I am a US citizen (40years) and have visited Colombia many times over the years and I am now getting ready to retire there. The only documentation I have linking me to Colombia is my US Certificate of Naturalization. Green card and Colombian passport were surrendered at the US citizen ceremony. Any suggestions on which Colombian Embassy/ Consulate to begin the process of obtaining my proper Colombian birth documentation?

Hi thankyou! Question. When you say you are not allowed to work with certain visas... DO YOU MEAN ...the person is not allowed to work a COLOMBIAN job? Or do you mean any at all employment...including remote from your home country or online (own business)? Thanks very much :)

Good, but I believe you can work for a company in the U.S. or elsewhere online if you hold a pensionado visa. I think the problem is that the government of Colombia does not want you to take jobs away from Colombians. So, Colombian jobs you cannot do, but I think you can do online jobs for companies based in other countries including the U.S.. Let me know if you think that I am wrong.....

With a Colombian Resident visa you can work for any company (local o foreign), It has an indefinite validity; When the employment contract of the holder of a TP-4 visa is terminated, he must either leave Colombia or seek a New Job or apply for Another Type of visa; Report to the Chancery for any change of employer or if you cange to freelancer report it too, if you freelancer you must be affiliated to the public healthcare system (EPS) and risk labours (ARL) system based on your incomes or must be affiliated to another healthcare system secure ; The foreigner holder of the Resident Visa who is absent from the country for a term of 2 years or more maybe can lose it, report to the Chancery that situation; The RE visa allows to exercise any legal activity in Colombia. --> www.asuntoslegales.com.co/analisis/christoph-moller-511546/como-obtener-la-visa-de-residente-en-colombia-2344266

Great content, I'm just a little sad that after almost a decade of residency, you still pronounced the Spanish words with a 100% north American gringo accent. Like "pen-shun-ado", "sed-jew-la", and "kuh-lum-bia" for pensionado, cédula, and Colombia. I mean, at least get the country name somewhat correct please 🥺 It's really hard to hear educated people say "Colombia" completely wrong and then some people spell it completely wrong too. Good video otherwise tho. Thank you
