I remember one christmas break, we had wrestling practice with the gym to ourselves. We had a track on the balcony level that we'd run laps around. We turned the gym lights off and cranked this song up and ran in the low glow of the emergency exit lights. For a bunch of teen kids, it was epic. And so was this movie.

@King Bishop earlier in the movie "vision quest" matthew modine's character gets a speech by his "mentor" who imparts to him that your entire life can be encapsulated into 6 minutes. what will you do in those 6 minutes for GLORY in this world. for matthew modine's character he wanted to be brian shute in a wrestling match. hence, the title of the movie VISION QUEST. Only The Young Can Say!
This song is so great. A lot of people don't understand the ultra important concepts behind the sheer GREATNESS of this song and the driven attitude of Louden Swain in "Vision Quest."

This song reminds me of way back in the eighties when I was just a kid, probably around 11 or 12. Our school sucked bad at high school football. All surrounding counties knew it and they must have fought over us to play them at their homecoming as it was a guaranteed victory. For some reason, this football coach, of a few towns up from us, ran the score up on us pretty badly. They were a bigger school than us. He never put any second stringers in. Played us into the dirt, something like 70 to 0 (no joke). When wrestling season rolled around, we had a Senior who had been to state and won the year before. I think he missed the year before that due to injury. Anyway, this guy was a bad ass. He was carved from stone. Our wrestling team had a meet at the same school that ran that football score up on us. In front of both schools he wrestled their best wrestler who supposedly was pretty well known too. Our guy twisted this other guy into a pretzel and then kept letting him up before the count. I can’t remember how many times he did it but he kept doing it. He’d slam the guy upside down, pin him and then let go. Our side cheered so loud I thought it was going to blow my ears out. The other team booed so loud, same thing. I didn’t know much about wrestling (still don’t) but I remember people on our side, at first, yelling “what are you doing” when he’d let the kid up. After a few times every knew what he was doing and I must say, it was freaking awesome. This was well over 30 years ago and people still talk about it where I live.

This movie, this song...jeezus it made me work my ass off in high school athletically. I like to think I played a small part in this movie’s success. One day in the early 80s I was wandering around the mall when I got cornered by one of those survey assholes. I was a nice kid, so I agreed. He took me to a room where he showed me a couple trailers to this movie (Vision Quest) and asked for feedback. Anyway, both trailers focused on the romance/young love angle. There was absolutely no reference to wrestling or the message of working to fulfill your dreams in the trailers. You would have had no idea this was a movie about high school wrestling and the grind it takes to cut weight and stay in shape. Well, needless to say I shitcanned the trailers and said I absolutely wouldn’t see the movie based on what I saw. I never saw those same trailers distributed before the movie again, so they must’ve taken my feedback seriously. I can’t believe the Hollywood morons were trying to market this movie as some kind of tender romance movie. Wrestling, the grind, and trying to achieve your dreams are the primary messages. Romance and young love is just an ancillary side plot. So everyone can thank me (and thousands of others) who took Hollywood’s initial proposed trailers and wiped our butts with them because maybe Vision Quest wouldn’t have been released, not as widely released, or wouldn’t have been as successful unless they revealed that this is a movie about sports and triumph. Call me crazy and sappy, but 35 years later this one of my favorite movies ever.
