actually pretty fuel efficient for what they are.. look it up. not covered in this video. "With outboards of this size, fuel economy is probably moot, but decent figures are achievable. At 30 knots each engine was burning 16 gallons an hour, rising to 58 gallons per hour at 40 knots. The Everglades test boat carries 400 gallons of fuel and the tank was three-quarters full on demo day." either way.. boating is expensive. b.o.a.t. = bust out another thousand

If I understand it correctly, the 627's retailed for $100,000 each. Anyone who ponies up four of these at $400,000 will have no problem paying the fuel bill. As pointed out in another comment, they were actually fuel efficient for their power level.

@@RM-cm8hz Wow, so if you drive 40 nautical miles at 40 knots, that 4-whisk setup will swallow 232 gallons of fuel. Here in the UK, at pontoon prices, gas comes in around £7.50 ($9.30)/gallon. So, your 40-mile trip costs $2,157.60 in fuel alone!! That's taking serious weight out of the fattest wallet.

There is one major difference between a road vehicle engine and Marine/Aviation engines. The road vehicle engine spends most of it's life at less than 20% power - probably less than 10%. Marine/Aviation engines spend most of their lives at more than 80% power. This is why car engines are rarely used as the base for Marine/Aviation engines. The main indicator why the LSA was a bad choice in this case is how the cooling system had to be hugely improved to get it near suitable for marine output levels. And while you can improve the cooling system ancillaries, you can't do much to the actual cooling galleries in the engine itself.
@Choochinc
@Choochinc Жыл бұрын
You're overlooking one thing about cooling with those. Intake water temp. In an automotive application, the coolant going back into the engine from the radiator is still hot, just not as hot as what comes out of the engine. In a marine application, the intake water is cold. So as long as you have a sufficiently sized heat exchanger, you won't have heat issues ever. Water to air is massively less efficient than water to water. As for the difference in lifetime load, that all comes down to oil cooling. As long as you keep the oil cool enough to not lose film strength, you can run an engine at full throttle, max RPM all day long without a problem. There's nothing fundamentally different between an automotive engine and a marine/aviation engine. That is especially obvious with diesels that have on road and off road uses. Usually the marine variants are considerably more powerful than the on road variants, despite having no internal differences other than the cam profile. You also do see automotive engines used as inboard marine engines pretty commonly. I've seen all kinds of Chevy small blocks, big blocks, LS's, and straight 6s in boats before, as well as numerous CAT and Cummins engines which can also be had in trucks.

@@Choochinc Actually both are correct. I watch drag racing. So high HP yet time to cool everything down. Boats have water always going thru everything to cool it down and if no oil cooler well that is the issue. If always at 110% or more something is going to break it is just a matter of what will and where it broke. I saw a $100k 4500HP motor break cause he used unknown rods cause his normal ones were out of stock. Made all 8 rods into dust. Same guy used a new company for the crankshaft bolts and well one sheered off and thus didn't break a rod yet tore off the rod cap. It fixed now and he will be doing drag and drive starting Monday with that same motor.

When I first saw this at the 2011 boat show in Miami I was surprised because it seemed like all new technology. I was on the invention review committee at the company I worked at so I did a patent pending search, nothing, searched, patents issued, nothing, searched by owners name, up came some trivial stuff from dad when he was at Merc. When I got a close look it seemed to be a variation of existing technologies whose patents have all expired. I wasn’t sure about the trans, now mowing it’s an existing ZF product makes total sense. I’m sure the big Merc V12 uses the same. The company I worked for got eaten up by ZF and served up by John Plant, the pig (and bonus) fattener. He came through our division and booted out 8 guys over 50, most over 55, highly compensated, responsible for building the business and delivering a best in class product. I guess our job was done. Soon after ZF bought a controlling interest. At one time Mr Plant was the highest compensated executive in Michigan. Glad we could help, John. I will never forget his leadership style.

His house of cards collapsed, the media darling wasn’t seen again on msnbc or cnn-business channel. He’s lucky he didn’t do jail time. Would have been a great stock to short. Lots of insiders and former execs knew he was a fake, published books on his trickery and got no press. They were confusing the issue with facts. Facts are out of fashion with 30% of the population now. I’m a retired engineer that worked primarily in analytics. That fact scares me. My mother and father told me that I would never see anything like The Great Depression that they lived through as young adults. “Dear Mom and Dad: I hope you don’t have to watch from above what is about to happen. “. @@ct1762 Understood. I am an engineer. My son is an engineer and an amateur race car enthusiast. He got to the point that he needed a dry sump oiling system on an LS motor he put in a BMW 3 series because of oil starvation issues. Second occurrence. First was a Subaru WRX with his DIY mods to make it into the X version using a HVAC controller that he did the embedded software for as part of his job at a supplier to Chrysler. It was at an ice race in Minnesota. With studded snow tires he was pulling more lateral g’s than on pavement with soft street tires. Who knew. For the LS motor he bought a used NASCAR dry sump system for $3000. I think the 667 team made a financial decision not an engineering decision. I didn’t mean to down play the importance of what Mercury Marine accomplished. It is a well engineered system. The R series motors are phenomenal. I can’t believe that Yamaha or Honda or Suzuki are not forming an alliance to try and upstage Merc. It’s not a matter of sales, it’s a matter of engineering excellence. Japanese post war arrogance (I had to put up with it as a US supplier to Japanese car manufacturers, they like to beat up on the supplier engineers) versus mid-western America (Wisconsin) “We can do this!” Japan beat the shit out of us because of bad management at the Big 3, like Roger Smith and Henry Ford Ii (The Deuce) didn’t take the Japanese commitment to quality seriously. Roger Smith called it a “passing fancy”, like “fins” Roger? He got a bonus every year that GM was slowly going down the toilet.

There are 2 VERY BIG reasons that they failed that you missed. 1. Mercury coming out with bigger engines up to 450hp that were half the weight and a lot less money killed sales. 2. The astronomical maintenance costs these things had. I was around a few of them and they were always getting serviced and the only techs that worked on them weren't cheap. Using a car engine to power a boat is as old as the invention of cars. And even today, most engines used in a majority of boats are automotive based. And the modifications needed to make them live long lives in the salt water world are well known and documented. The automotive world is the feedstock for the production of marine engines. What 7 did was package a high performance automotive v8 power head onto an outboard lower unit and turn it loose in the marine world. It flat out worked, and it sold. But like the OMC v8 outboards, which came onto the scene and literally raised the outboard performance bar to a totally new level, the Chevy V8 outboard did the same for outboards. Now 450hp+ v8 outboards are widely available. Center console boats with 3 to 8 outboards bolted to the transom putting 1000 to to 4500 hp into the water are somewhat common. Now you see those big boats getting to their destinations at 70 to 100+ mph speeds.

"most engines used in a majority of boats are automotive based" That is not true today. Outside of diesel all of Mercury's engines (outboard and sterndrive) are purpose-built marine engines. As someone who adores this engine it pisses me off what happened to the company. I literally rebuilt my entire boat (a 1978 glastron ssv175 around the design of this engine. It's really incredible how stupid fast it is. On such a small boat. I just pray every time I take it out that nothing goes wrong cuz finding parts is impossible. Imagine now if they took the engine from the ct5 blackwing and built the boat engine around it. I love my cadillacs and until someone takes the engine from a audi rs5 I'll never want to switch from this engine. Just wish mercury or something bought them to keep them going. Cuz let's be honest. Evinrude and 7 marine had am amazing engine design

Speaking as an Engineer, and a previous owner of an inboard outdrive boat , the idea of adapting an automotive power plant to anything but an automotive application results in bad reliability, too many changes in power direction, too much weight and an overall bad result. After a few years, I couldn't wait to get a power plant that was purpose built for a marine application. It has less weight and MUCH better better reliability. is quieter, with better fuel economy, etc. My suspicion is that these engines were ever intended to be anything other than for someone with too much money to brag about to the hot babes and his other rich buddies.

@@whocares4648 EPA is just a US thing which others don't necessarily follow, ask VW if they ever paid any fines. Just like them buying all the last supply of 496s GM made. The government had GM stop production during the bail out crying lack of efficiency but had no concern with volvo purchasing thousands of engines and use them for the next five years after they were discontinued.

And now Mercury is making a 600HP outboard and I'm seeing a number of them at the local marinas, they appear to be selling well. So it seems Volvo left something on the table. I wonder if the big outboards were cutting into the Volvo inboard sales and that had something to do with Volvo killing it? If yes, then it seems to have been a mistake as Mercury has picked up where they left off.
@Kowalski301
@Kowalski301 Жыл бұрын
Seven, even with Volvo backing it, would never been able to compete with Mercury. Seven was a custom, niche product with very high cost and many outsourced and complicated parts. The Mercury is basically an off the shelf product, normal warranty, have deals in relation to navigation/electronic support. It's developed from the ground up as a marine engine, with all the major parts built in house, and a huge dealer network, way bigger than VP. The moment the v12 Merc was released, the Seven sales would have dropped like a rock.
@8180634
@8180634 Жыл бұрын
@@Kowalski301 you're likely right, but there's still a group of people who buy for the flashiness above all else, and the 7 had that. Especially in the category of those big boats. Is a 65 center console with 5 outboards practical? Definitely not, it's a show piece, I think 7 could have continued to sell into that market. No doubt the Mercury would have been a better motor.
@Kowalski301
@Kowalski301 Жыл бұрын
@@8180634 There are always people who buy custom or niche products and like to show that off, but the market is small, and the exterior of an outboard is also very limited and streamlined in that regard, and they all essentially look very similar across brands. So a custom paint or decal job is basically "90%" of what people see and all you need to make your outboard "unique" The only other thing people care about is the number of outboards and the HP... So if the quality and performance AND look isn't setting the niche product apart from the competition, there are even less reason to buy it. It would be naive to think that VP didn't run the numbers and saw there wasn't any money in it for them.

The Cox 300hp V8 outboard Diesel has more torque at lower rpms, which means a faster plane and even in tight turns doesn't lose torque or rpms like the rest do. It does weigh more at 866lbs, however the pros out weigh the cons. And fuel mpg's forget about it, it blows them all out of the water. One tank to make it from Miami to Nassau and back, with no stops at Bimini for fuel. Now that's Impressive !

Okay, but in essence its an azimuth pod mounted to an supercharged LSA. Obviously the gear train would have to be designed in such a way to avoid patent infringement but its basically a 90 degree direction change between an engine platform thats got as much or more suppport in the performance and aftermarket street racing world as anything else; and a pod drive which multiple companies have marketed over the last 20 years. I mean there are LS jet boats and air boats and for that matter SBC 350s in more inboard boats that pretty much all other non-diesel motors. Take a super available and easily upgraded high-hp motor, makena reduction gear jack shaft which isnt a top secret mechanism and add an off the shelf pod drive and wrap ot in some custom molded plastic and Id be hard pressed to consider it a patent issue and its certainly not unable to function in marine environments. Its an assembly of more or less common off the shelf parts using fairly standard gear train fundamentals, it wasnt some kind of perpetual motion machine or fusion reactor

They have 430hp gasoline and 1000hp diesel inboards. Rich people mostly buy a ready to run boat, they do not care about inboard or outboard, so they could easily be picking between a Volvo 800-1000hp diesel inboard or a seven marine 600hp gasoline outboard. So it still makes sense to buy out the competition, and the competition was greedy enough to take the money and leave his company.

It was cool but it was a bad idea. Boats require constant sustained power because they can't coast. Using a supercharge, Petrol, V8 motor was the wrong philosphy. These are good for short burst of power and use lots of gas. The right philosophy is OXO marine with a 4.0L twin-turbo , V8, direct injection diesel. It has more torque and can sustain it's power at a lower speed. Plus it gains efficiency at lower throttle levels which what it takes to overcome the constant resistance of water. These motors were special though, It's a shame they sold to Volvo Penta, Volvo does make wonderful marine motors.

The investment giant Blackrock made it clear publicly in 2017 they would force companies financially to comply with their woke agendas and the 2020 lockdowns showed the WEF’s and Blackrock’s of the world meant business. I suspect ICE outboards aren’t part of the globalists plan for the mass of humanity.
